Guide to Pre-Law
The pre-law curriculum at UL-Lafayette provides students interested in careers in law with a balanced and challenging course of study. The curriculum is designed to meet the American Bar Association (ABA), Law School Admission Council (LSAC), and Association of American Law Schools (AALS) guidelines for prelegal education and is coupled with sound career Counseling and assistance with the law school admissions process. The program, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, has been offered from the first days of the university and is the only curriculum in the university specifically designed with the pre-law student in mind. Rugg's Recommendations on Colleges, 18th ed. (2003-2004), lists the UL-Lafayette Pre-Law program as being in the Top Ten Percent of Pre-Law programs nationwide. Hundreds of students have completed the pre-law Curriculum and been admitted to law schools throughout the nation. These include Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Texas as well as the Louisiana law schools at Tulane, Loyola, Southern, and LSU. Students who achieve a high grade point average in their undergraduate work and score well on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) will be especially attractive candidates for the most competitive law schools. Advisory Services Effective academic and career advising is particularly emphasized in UL-Lafayette's pre-law program. Two political science faculty members serve as specialized advisors to pre-law majors. They are prepared to provide information about individual law schools, their admission requirements and procedures, and their scholarship programs. These two faculty members currently belong to and have held offices in the Southwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors.

Where do Political Science majors from Stetson go after graduation?  To elective office in Congress and state legislatures; to leading universities as teachers and researchers; and to distinguished careers in journalism, business, government service, and the law.  In recent years, the most popular destination for Stetson's Political Science graduates has been the law, where they join generations of Stetson alumni who have served as respected judges and attorneys in Florida and around the nation. An education in Political Science at Stetson is about more than elections, treaties, and lawmaking.  It offers students a broad and challenging preparation for life in public affairs or commerce, whether in this country or abroad.  It does so in an environment of small classes and seminars that is supplemented by an unusually rich array of special opportunities. On campus, students participate in the United States Model Senate, the International Symposium, and the Sophomore Seminar, and they write their own theses in the senior year.  Off campus, Political Science majors will be found in internships in Central Florida and around the world, including in fully-funded internships in Spain and Latin America.  They also take part in study trips to New York, Washington, Tallahassee, Central America, and Central Asia, trips that are led by members of the Political Science Department.

In the liberal arts tradition, programs and courses are fashioned to help students develop the skills and background necessary to interpret the political world and understand how politics shapes contemporary life. The department's goals are to help students improve their capacity to creatively ask and systematically answer questions, and to improve their skills in communicating their knowledge and insights in both written and oral fashion. Students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors to plan their study and to sample widely from a variety of course offerings. Students must also participate in either community service and/or research activities appropriate to their career goals and interests.

Why Minor in Legal Studies? While professional legal training in the United States is reserved for American law schools, the study of law as a part of a society and its culture is an important component of a liberal arts education. At PLU Legal Studies is an interdisciplinary program of study focusing on the nature of law and judicial process. Consistent with the purposes of the American Legal Studies Association, a Minor in Legal Studies provides alternative approaches to the study of law drawn from classes in social sciences, humanities, the arts, business, and education.

It provides space for these pre-law students to meet informally with faculty and alumni who are practicing attorneys or judges. The home features a bright classroom with new windows, lights, walls, and furniture designed for interactive teaching. Across the hall, a foyer with a kitchen area and a computer with law databases serves as an entry to a larger, comfortable den-like room. The room has parquet floor, a warm, leather coach, an oaken conference table, and floor-to-ceiling bookcases that hold information about law schools, law firms, and legal decisions.

Possible Careers Examples of Careers Some of today's Political Science majors will be tomorrow's lawyers and judges. Others will be in businessbecause corporations need people who understand the workings of politics, government, and other forms of social organization. If the past is any guide, there will also be political science graduates in marketing research, law enforcement, public relations, labor relations, foreign service, teaching, and social work. Writers, editors, government officials at all levels, real estate brokers, lobbyists, insurance underwriters, human resources managers (what companies used to call "personnel directors") will include a number of political science graduates. Political Science is a great major for future politiciansboth full-time professionals and citizen activists. Many politicians are lawyers, and a political science major offers an excellent preparation for law school. Why? First, because in Liberal Arts you develop important intellectual tools that law schools prize. Second, because the political science major who becomes a lawyer understands where the law fits in the broader American system. Political science offers ways of understanding how attorneys, judges, and civil and criminal systems fit together and work. Future lawyer or not, if you are a political science major who gets involved in politics, you'll find that an LMU education has prepared you to understand how the system works and how to get things done. You will also be well prepared to think about how things should be doneto tell the difference between good and bad policies and choices, and how to work for positive change.

It is an exciting world and a challenging one. Full of promise and filled with danger, it is a world of law and lawlessness; of nation-states and transnational entities; of villages, sprawling cities and international organizations. It is a world in which politicians and government officials play a central role in shaping the fate of the planet. The field of study known as political science provides a gateway to this multi-layered world. A number of our faculty are involved in politics firsthand, which enables them to share with their students a close working knowledge of local, state, national and global politics.

    • At Alfred University, the pre-law program is centered around quality advising to all interested students rather than a prescribed curriculum: this is because law schools, unlike medical schools, do not dictate core prerequisite classes for admittance. Law schools seek students who have strong reasoning and communication (written and oral) skills as well as an understanding of what shapes human experience A number of majors at Alfred University can effectively prepare students for law school, with proper advising. Some majors pre-law students have chosen in the past are: English, business, engineering, history, philosophy, psychology and political science. Alfred University graduates have attended law school at the following: Harvard University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, Case Western, University of Richmond, University of Colorado, University of Buffalo and SUNY Albany. Students who indicate an interest in pre-law are assigned to one of the four pre-law advisors in addition to their major advisor. Working closely with both advisors, students tailor their education to best prepare them for law school. The road each student takes will be as unique as the different reasons students have for pursung a law degree. However, certain common threads are present in the advising process:

During the period the Justice Center published and circulated to the University, the community, and the state 15 newsletters; 7 year-end reports; 10 project reports; and three issues of the Grant Sawyer Center Occasional Paper Series.
The Justice Center sponsored a substantial grant (co-PIs James Richardson and Gerald Ginsburg) funded by the State Justice Institute, which was combined with funding from the National Judicial College, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Federal Judicial Center, and ourselves to design and implement a national study of judges' preparation for decisions about scientific evidence in the courtroom. This research produced numerous presentations at scientific meetings and publications. The findings were used also to create a benchbook for judges which has had major impact.
The Director of the Judicial Studies Program is a prolific scholar, with XX books, XX articles in refereed journals, and XX presentations during the last five years.
