Recognizing that free advice is worth what you pay for it, the following is provided free of charge. It is based on my experience and therefore is somewhat limited and even if it were more expansive, it all may change tomorrow anyway. With that said, let's get started. A major caution before we begin. Forensic scientists work in the justice system. If you have a criminal record, you have virtually no chance of getting a job as a forensic scientist. If you use drugs (and in Miami, even tobacco) you usually can forget it. Life ain't fair! There are lots of good jobs that overlook youthful indiscretions but the justice system does not. It all begins with what you want to do. There are six general areas of practice (any I've left out I don't know enough about to give even free advice). If you know that you are interested in one of the areas, click on it and go directly to that discussion.

Careers in Marine Science
Advice to Students and Parents From the Scientists of Mote Marine Laboratory Science is the systematic discovery of knowledge about the natural world, and marine science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine scientists work in a surprising variety of disciplines. Examples include planetology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography, paleontology, and biology. Marine science also includes archaeology , anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Scientists in such disciplines may be highly specialized. Geologists, for example, may concentrate on coastal processes, dynamics of the continental shelf or slope, or structure of the ocean floor. Chemists may work entirely at the interface of the sea and atmosphere, in the zone affected by ocean waves, at the maximum depth of light penetration, or in the environments created by deep sea thermal vents. Biologists may work mostly in tropical waters or polar seas, on plants, invertebrates, or vertebrates. Many marine scientists have multiple specialties or work as part of multi disciplinary teams. Marine scientists are employed by universities and colleges, international organizations, federal and state agencies, private companies, nonprofit laboratories and local governments, or they may be self-employed . Marine scientists draw professional salaries and may be rewarded richly for their work in intangible ways, but they almost never become wealthy by American standards. Salaries depend on each person's education, experience, and specific discipline. Location, the present supply of scientists, and other factors also affect individual salaries. Examples of marine sciences that presently pay above-average salaries are physical oceanography, marine technology and engineering, and computer modeling.

Job Search Timeline
It is typical for engineering and science students to begin their job search during the fall of the senior year of college. Companies who hire large numbers of new hires will usually begin screening resumes in September and October often granting interviews in the fall and early in the spring. This, however, largely depends on the size of the company and their recruiting practices. Many small companies hire when they have needs rather than projecting 8-12 months ahead of time so you will also find companies who may not be actively recruiting until they have a specific vacancy.

http://phys.kent.edu/ug_pages/careers.html
Careers in Physics Most physicists are employed by educational institutions, industrial firms, government laboratories, or federally funded research and development centers. Vocations in physics fall into four major categories: Research:
Basic research has as its goal the understanding of physical phenomena without a specific application in mind. Applied research leads to the solution of problems of national importance or of significant commercial value. Development and Design:
Work in this area utilizes both basic and applied research to improve existing products, processes and instruments, and to develop new ones. Teaching:
Many physicists are employed in academic institutions, including instructors at the high school, community college, college, and university levels. In the latter, research and teaching are often combined. Management and Other Areas:
Physicists can be found in a wide variety of areas such as research administration, university administration, science reporting, technical management and marketing, and in such fields as metallurgy, electronics, food processing and packaging, health and radiation safety, pollution control, computer technology, financial services and a broad and continually expanding array of other possibilities.

What Can You Do With a Physics Major After Graduation?
Why Be a Physics Major?
Nobody knows what the economic situation will be then, or which fields will be "hot." Attempts to do this kind of forecasting in the past have been notably unsuccessful. The best advice to undergraduates at this stage seems to be, "Do what interests you and what you are good at." If you think you want to go on to Physics graduate school and ultimately be a professional physicist, you should ask yourself two questions: 1) Am I really, really excited by Physics, to the extent that I want to do it more than anything else? 2) Am I good at Physics? If your answers to both questions are positive, you should seriously consider majoring in Physics and then continuing on to graduate school. There will always be openings for good people. If you aren't sure about your answers, you should still consider majoring in Physics, but be thinking about other things to do after graduation.

Most of us became physicists because we found physics fascinating. We assumed somehow that, when our formal studies ended, we would find jobs in physics that would continue to reward us intellectually and, unlike our graduate work, would also reward us financially. Depending on what year we started job hunting, our expectations might have been fulfilled easily or might have been redefined drastically. Physics Today has covered careers in physics for many years. During the last downturn in employment, we launched a series, Career Choices, which ran from 1993 to 1998 (see http://www.physicstoday.org
