Career Opportunities for Majors in Physics
Introduction
A branch of the physical sciences, physics is the study of energy and the behavior of single atoms and their component pieces. Physicists consider themselves the most fundamental of scientists, for they are the ones who examine the basic laws of nature. They seek to study and understand what happens when atoms and subatomic particles break down and assemble, how they react to collisions with each other and to electro-magnetic radiation. Physicists use mathematics to understand, explain and predict their theories and equations. They often apply their predictions and theories to other fields - chemistry, biology, geophysics, engineering, communication, transportation, electronics and health. A physicist can be either an experimentalist or a theoretician. Almost all have doctorates, which are essential for college and university teaching and research, upper level research positions in government and industry, and higher administrative positions. Those with bachelors degrees may work in applied research and development as research assistants or in design, administration or engineering. Some specialized areas of career interest for physicists include: biophysics, health/medical physics, nuclear physics, optical physics, fluid physics and plasma physics.

Career Opportunities for Majors in Environmental Sciences
Introduction
The environmental sciences major provides an understanding of the biological and physical sciences and their application to environmental problems. Students can pursue a wide variety of options which offer diverse career paths. Curriculum specialties include Pollution and Treatment Sciences, Environmental, Occupational, and Radiological Health Science, Soil and Water Resources, Environmental Education, Marine Studies, and Environmental Chemistry. An environmental sciences degree can prepare students for a wide range of careers in industry, government, the non-profit sector, and education. Many labor market experts predict that environmental industries will be a major source of new jobs in the next decade. Some technical specialties will require further graduate training either for career entry or advancement. Some students choose to combine their undergraduate degrees with an MBA or law degree. Since environmental issues will impact most sectors of the job market, an educational background in this field will be attractive to a wide range of employers.

Department of Astronomy Graduating with an Astronomy Degree
WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN ASTRONOMY?
The Department of Astronomy provides a range of courses and programs for students planning careers in astronomy, space science, or related fields. A concentration in astronomy and physics includes a rigorous program of physics and calculus in addition to courses in astronomy. This prepares a student for entry into a graduate program leading to a Masters and/or Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field. The concentration in astronomy is less intense in physics and calculus, yet still provides a student with a solid foundation in the physical sciences. The planetary and space sciences concentration is a multidisciplinary program including astronomy, geology, geography, physics, and calculus courses. Many students in this concentration enroll in graduate programs in planetary geology. A BA degree in astronomy, astronomy and physics, or planetary and space sciences prepares students for careers in science education, science management, scientific computing, scientific instrumentation, or science writing (some of which may require one or two years of graduate study). Qualification for such fields is enhanced when students work in the research groups of astronomy professors as work-study, student employment, and/or directed study participants. The opportunity to do so has expanded considerably in recent years as the astronomy faculty has increased in number and in the scope of research projects.

World Wide Web: http://www.physsci.uci.edu/ Department of Chemistry Department of Earth System Science Department of Mathematics Department of Physics and Astronomy The School of Physical Sciences offers both professional training and general education in the Departments of Chemistry, Earth System Science, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. The faculty, active in research and graduate education, are at the same time vitally concerned with undergraduate teaching. Curricula of the School are designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students ranging from those with little technical background who seek insight into the activities and accomplishments of physical scientists to those seeking a comprehensive understanding that will prepare them for creative research in physical science. Over the course of the past century and a half, physics, chemistry, and mathematics have evolved into interdependent but separate intellectual disciplines. This development is reflected in the departmental structure of the School of Physical Sciences. In the same period, these fundamental disciplines have moved into domains of abstraction unimagined by early scientists. This trend to abstraction with its concomitant increase in understanding of the physical universe provides the major challenge to the student of the physical sciences. Mathematics, physics, and chemistry, while providing the foundation of the technology that dominates contemporary civilization, underlie to an ever-increasing extent the new developments in the biological and social sciences. Earth system science is grounded in the traditional physical sciences while breaking new paths in the quantitative study of changes in the global environment.

    Careers in Meteorology
    What is meteorology?
Meteorology is the science and study of the earth's atmosphere and its interaction with the earth itself and all forms of life. It embraces a wide range of time and space scales, from the tiniest turbulent eddies, which survive as recognizable entities for only a second or two, to the variations in ice cover and the global climatic fluctuations, which extend over millennia. It seeks to understand and to predict for the benefit of mankind the behaviour of weather, the climate and the atmosphere in general, from the surfaces of land and sea to the edge of space.
    The profession of meteorology
The many areas related to, or within which, meteorologists work range from weather forecasting to climatology and from horticulture to the planning and operation of great engineering undertakings. They include the development of complex mathematical representations of the way the atmosphere works and can be predicted, the manipulation of vast data resources, the design, development and testing of new instruments, and the use of modern communications and data- management systems. There are also close links with sister sciences such as hydrology and physical oceanography. Within this wide spectrum, there are opportunities for pure research, applied research, operational work, scientific and commercial management, entrepreneurial ventures, teaching and consultancy.
