    1. Physics: The Base of Other Science and Technology
Physics is the science that describes how the physical world works. It is the most fundamental of all sciences. Other sciences build on physics. Physicists conduct research into the fundamental laws of nature or make use of what we already know about the physical world to design and develop new practical products. As a career, physics offers an astonishing variety of possibilities. The world of the physicist stretches from the tiniest particles of subatomic matter to galaxies and beyond. It includes computer circuitry and spacecraft orbits, medical imaging and the search for controlled fusion power. Some of the questions that physicists try to answer are deeply philosophical: How did the universe begin? On a very small scale, does empty space become "granular" or "foamy"? But many of the questions that physicists deal with are highly practical: How can more information be packed into a smaller space? What will be the effect of adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere? Can chemical rockets be replaced by electromagnetic launchers? How can solar cells be made more efficient? Most modern technology rests on physics. Sometimes new knowledge is put to work quickly. For example, many practical uses were found for the laser soon after its invention. Sometimes new knowledge is slow to be harnessed. In 1905 Albert Einstein explained how light can eject electrons from solid surfaces. It was many years before this "photoelectric effect" found application in television cameras.

This article examines this long-overdue change in the law and discusses its potential implications."

Where do the EP graduates go? Roughly 20 percent to 30 percent choose to go immediately to graduate school. About 20 percent to 25 percent are at Embry-Riddle on ROTC scholarships and go immediately to service obligations. The remaining 50 percent (approx.) to work primarily in the space program in Houston and in Southern California, for example. What are the graduate school opportunities for EP graduates? Our students have gone into programs in physics, chemistry, astronomy, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and even medical physics. Virtually all have received full assistantships or fellowships to continue their education. They have gone to schools such as Dartmouth, University of Michigan, Penn State, University of Florida, Florida State, M.I.T., Washington University, and The University of Texas-Austin. Are EP graduates limited by the availability of space program jobs? We think they certainly are not. Their education prepares them for careers in applied physics and all sorts of engineering fields. This has been one of the most consistent findings of the Industrial Advisory Board for the EP Program. The broad mathematics, science, engineering, and computer applications gained in EP are the keys to 21st century technology and the developments we cannot yet predict.

    Laboratory Geneticists:

Application of modern genetic technology to agriculture, legal or police work, pharmaceutical development, and clinical medicine requires the services of sophisticated laboratories. These laboratories are staffed by scientists trained in molecular biology, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, immunogenetics, and related disciplines. Genetic laboratory directors usually hold Ph.D. degrees or M.D. degrees with specialization in laboratory medicine. Most genetic laboratory technologists have four to six years of university education. Some genetic laboratories require their staff to have specific training and certification in cytogenetic or medical technology. Other genetic laboratories hire people with any relevant B.S. or M.S. degree as long as they can show an aptitude for the kind of work that is being done. The career of a laboratory geneticist offers the opportunity to apply genetics "hands on" to a variety of important problems. Genetic Counselors:
    Clinical Geneticists:

Clinical geneticists are usually individuals who have an M.D. degree. Therefore, undergraduates would need to satisfy the requirements for medical school admission. A major in the biological or physical sciences may be desirable, although not necessary, provided the admission requirements are fulfilled. After medical school, a residency in pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, or internal medicine should be completed, followed by a fellowship in clinical genetics. Currently, most residency programs are three to five years; fellowships are an additional two or three years. Individuals would then be qualified for positions in research centers, hospitals or medical centers.

is a profession that helps to minimize or prevent some of the physical problems that arise from injury, disease, aging, disability, birth defects or long periods of inactivity. It deals with assessing, treating and training the individual in order for them to regain maximum function. The goal of physiotherapy is to obtain and maintain an individual's highest independent function.
A physiotherapist is a highly trained healthcare professional who specializes in mobility. The physiotherapist works in a wide variety of settings such as:
    • Rehabilitation Centres Hospitals Private Clinics Home Care Programs Schools Recreation Centres Long Term Care Facilities Special Interest Clincs Industry Universities
    Education
Physical therapists attain their prerequisite skills through extensive academic and clinical education. Preparation for entrance into a physical therapist education program includes courses in psychology, biology, physics, chemistry, statistics, English, professional writing, and humanities. In other words, the pre-physical therapy college curriculum should include a strong background in liberal arts and general education. All professional programs include basic and clinical medical science courses and emphasize the theory and practice of physical therapy. The curriculum includes opportunities to apply and integrate theory through extensive clinical education in a variety of practice settings.

    What is Meteorology?
Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere. It offers the opportunity of investigating the forces that shape weather and climate and how human activities can affect climate through the introduction of pollutants into the atmosphere.
    Employment
In the United States the largest employer is the United States Government through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Students interested in meteorology should view the future with a fair degree of optimism. A university degree in meteorology, combined with appropriate courses in environmental sciences, computer science and/or chemistry, opens the door to a number of careers, some within the government, others in industry. The atmosphere plays a major role in transporting pollutants from one region of the globe to another, and, as such, is a key component of the environment. The need for professionals who understand how the atmosphere behaves can be expected to grow in the years to come, as societies around the world become more and more industrialized and eject more and more pollution into the atmosphere.
    Choosing a Career in Meteorology
    High School
The first step for a student in considering a career in meteorology or atmospheric sciences is to opt in favor of physical science courses and mathematics.

Agricultural economists have management-related jobs in agribusiness firms. They use modern analytical management tools to make profitable decisions. Agricultural economists do financial analysis, develop marketing plans, and set up optimal production schedules in U.S. and international food and fiber firms. They often begin their careers in management or production operations or as sales representatives, then progressively take on increasing responsibility for decision-making. Most agricultural economists spend a great deal of their work lives analyzing alternative decisions. Agribusiness firms that provide such things as feed, seed, fertilizer or capital, and those that process and distribute agricultural products, employ agricultural economists. Feed, seed, and fertilizer firms; rural banks; and input cooperatives employ agricultural economists to manage their operations. Many agricultural economists work for wholesale and retail food processing firms. To become an agricultural economist you need an interest in and ability to make analytical decisions. You need to learn economic theory, mathematics, computer skills, and modern decision-making tools in finance, marketing, and management. Most agribusiness firms require graduates with bachelor's degrees, although some prefer to hire people who have earned master's degrees.

    The Profession
For decades, ionizing radiation has been beneficial to humans, from treating cancer to generating electrical power. But when used in large quantity or in an unsafe way, ionizing radiation can harm living organisms. Care must be taken with nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons, high-energy particle accelerators, x-ray machines, and radionuclides used in biomedical research and therapy. This special attention helps minimize the potential for unnecessary irradiation of individuals or environmental contamination. Many industries, medical facilities, defense plants, and research laboratories demand professionals who understand radiation hazards and their prevention and control. Prominent among scientists is the health physicist, who controls the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards. The health physics profession is diverse and one of the most interesting and rewarding fields of scientific endeavor.
