The Careers Home Page links to sites providing career information in the sciences. The links are arranged according to scientific field or discipline. Click on the links to the left to visit the field categories for lists of links. Sites that are not restricted to science are listed under "General" whereas those applicable to more than one discipline are listed under "Science". Most of the sites listed on these pages contain information about careers, job opportunities, or career development but a few do not. Those that do not are included for a variety of reasons, but usually because they are important employers of scientists. Most of the employment information is directed to individuals with a BS degree in a field of science but some are primarily for those holding advanced degrees. The services of most of these sites are free but some require membership in the sponsoring organization and some are commercial and charge a fee for their services. Inclusion of commercial sites in the Lander Careers in Science pages does not constitute or imply endorsement by Lander University or the State of South Carolina or their agents.

Nga Putaiao Tangata Industry Overview
Scientific research is increasingly being recognised as crucial to the development of a modern knowledge economy. The New Zealand Government invests approximately 0.6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in science and technology by purchasing research, technology development, and services from Crown Research Institutes, universities, research associations and the private sector. This figure looks likely to increase to 0.8% of GDP by 2010. Approximately 2,000 people identified themselves as physical scientists in the 1996 Census and another 4,400 identified themselves as working in related technician roles. Physical scientists in New Zealand are principally employed at Crown Research Institutes, universities and research companies in the private and public sectors. Research in physical sciences is broad ranging and includes, for example, observations on how weather systems develop, laser physics and the production of anti-tumour drugs from marine organisms. Public investment in research, science and technology was approximately $490 million in 2000/2001 and there are political commitments to increase this investment over the next 15 years. Approximately 80% of this money is targeted investment, aimed at achieving defined economic, social and environmental objectives. This includes money invested in science and technology in government departments, Technology New Zealand, the Health Research Council, the New Economy Research Fund, and Environmental Research. The remaining 20% is untargeted investment, and includes the Marsden Fund and funded research in universities.

NON-ACADEMIC CAREERS IN PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY
The purpose of this brochure is to inform physical anthropology graduate students of career opportunities in non-academic settings. In a concern with the future professional careers of students completing their graduate educations in physical anthropology (particularly at the doctoral level), the American Association of Physical Anthropologists has established a standing committee devoted to career development. This brochure is one of the Committee's educational efforts to inform the student constituency of the Association as to the nature and diversity of professional careers in addition to those in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. In addition to the most traditional, that of faculty member of an anthropology department, they involve academic affiliations with community colleges and a number of different non-anthropology academic units within four year colleges and universities. These include medical schools; indeed, currently one in eight American physical anthropologists has some formal professional affiliation with a medical school, most frequently in departments of anatomy. Departments of genetics, zoology, and biological sciences are also logical academic units in which one might find physical anthropologists.

Indoor Mold, Dampness Are Linked to Respiratory Problems
May 25 Scientific evidence links mold and other factors related to damp conditions in homes and other buildings to asthma symptoms in some asthmatics as well as to coughing, wheezing and other upper respiratory tract symptoms in otherwise healthy people, says a new Institute of Medicine report. The available evidence does not support an association between either interior dampness or mold and the wide range of other health complaints that have been ascribed to them, but the possibility of a link cannot be ruled out.
MMR Vaccine and Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines Are Not Associated With Autism
May 18 Based on a thorough review of clinical and epidemiological studies, neither the mercury-based vaccine preservative thimerosal nor the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are associated with autism, says a new Institute of Medicine report. Hypotheses regarding how the MMR vaccine and thimerosal could trigger autism lack supporting evidence and are theoretical only. Further research to find the cause of autism should be directed toward other lines of inquiry that are supported by current knowledge and evidence and offer more promise for providing an answer.

Terp Online Internships
The College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences encourages students to participate in internships to gain practical knowledge to augment what is learned in the classroom. Students may earn general elective credit for internships by taking CMPS 497 (see below). Internships can be paid or unpaid. Internships differ as much as the companies and organizations that offer them. While some internships are project based, others require performing the duties of a position or rotating through various departments of an organization. Whichever type of internship you undertake, it is critical that it be a learning experience related to your major and career goals. Internships are one of several experiential learning programs and opportunities. The benefits of experiential learning include:
  • Gaining professional experience Learning technical skills Applying your classroom experience in a practical setting Earning money - many internships are paid Developing self confidence Developing professional networks Exploring career options maybe a job offer when you graduate
CMPS Internship Program
Internship opportunities can be found on Terp Online and a variety of other sources. Emails are sent periodically alerting students to new listings and deadline dates. To learn about more employment opportunities, we encourage you to use your personal/professional network, the Web and to attend Campus Career Fairs. To be considered for a job, follow the application instructions. You will be contacted directly by the organization if you are selected to interview. You are responsible for negotiating a salary, schedule and other relevant considerations. Career Services can provide resources for your information in these matters.

Careers in Science
"Whether or not you become a scientist, the basic understanding of scientific reasoning, methodology and principles that you obtain from your first degree in science will be of inestimable value to you." - Justice Robert French, Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and Science Graduate of The University of Western Australia
What sorts of careers are open to science graduates, apart from working in laboratories?
All sorts! Many science students join companies as scientists and move across into management positions. Planning and advisory roles in government agencies are another possibility. Anyone who loves to share their enthusiasm for science should consider working as a science communicator (in museums, in journalism, etc.) or in teaching - science teachers are very much in demand, especially in the physical sciences and mathematics. In fact, the State Government has implemented a program to pay the HECS fees of graduates who begin teaching science in 2003. Besides a sound understanding of their chosen major discipline(s) , science students develop important general skills that are highly valued by employers, such as the ability to think rationally and critically, to examine and test ideas and solve problems, to analyse data and present clear reports, to make the most of modern technical equipment, and to work independently and in groups.

Over-wintering positions : At Halley there are 7 staff who are responsible for a very wide range of experiments, mainly focussed on atmospheric research from the interaction of the air with the snow, to geospace. About 3 or 4 posts for electronics engineers and physics usually with a degree or equivalent experience. At Rothera, there are 2 staff who main tasks are associated with the meteorological programme. Qualifications for these posts are the same as Halley. Advertisements are normally in January, interview in March with appointment in mid- to late summer. For further details see the Employment Opportunities pages. For Cambridge , the science posts normally require a PhD, and for engineering and computing position a degree is usually the minimum requirement. All posts are advertised, usually in New Scientist.
