Metropolitan areas throughout the world are centers for the arts in which humanity discovers and develops its soul. In electing to name the performing arts as central to its mission, Southwest Missouri State University recognizes the historical impact and future potential of the performing arts in the region in which it is located and which the university has historically served. SMSU understands the essentially public nature of the performing arts and the ramifications of such a nature: that performing artists, as vehicles of human expression, must actively participate in the community and not be isolated from it; that the performing arts fulfill a variety of needs which range from enlightenment to entertainment to economic development; that the performing arts are inextricably linked to the visual and language arts; and that the performing arts must consistently seek to develop breadth of expression in deference to the diversity of the public they serve. Inasmuch as the performing arts are of, by, about and for the people, the university's commitment to the performing arts is a statement of oneness with its community. In this spirit of unity, the university dedicates itself to a collaborative partnership with all performing arts venues, and with all organizations and initiatives which impact the performing arts within SMSU's unique metropolitan region. This commitment necessitates, as a point of departure, assessments both of performing arts community needs and of present and potential collaborative arrangements with that community. Specifically, such cooperation will be intended to meet the immediate and long-range needs of the performing arts community, to prepare university students for potential careers in the performing arts, to enrich the lives of all SMSU students through exposure to the performing arts, to create a foundation of life-long appreciation of aesthetic values, and to educate and entertain, both formally and informally, the populace of the area served by the institution.

http://www.jmkac.org/performing_arts/performing_arts.htm
This season we are pleased to welcome Milwaukee's renowned Chamber Theatre to the Arts Center stage to present two wonderful plays based on two great books. We begin with a madcap romp through time immemorial with a play based on the book of all books, the "Good Book," The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged) . Sparkling with raucous comedy and observations on our own understanding of the Word, this is a play fraught with human foible; a more entertaining Cliffs Notes version you could not find. The second play takes us to London to visit a bookseller on Charing Cross Road. What begins as a search from across the sea for volumes old and rare becomes a lifelong correspondence between two people seeking humanity between the covers of books. This is a quietly sentimental and thoughtful play mixed with gentle humor. This summer, take time out to join us for an unforgettable tale or two.

SCREENINGS ON THE GREEN—SUBMIT YOUR “SHORTS”
Remember those lazy summer nights at the drivein theatre where, instead of endless trailers, every feature film had animated shorts like “Bambi Meets Godzilla” as a warm-up? Even if you don’t remember firsthand, take our word for it; nights watching open-air movies were pretty magical. JMKAC is bringing those nights back this summer with Screenings on the Green—three nights of film shorts for your pleasure and entertainment—free of charge on JMKAC’s Festival Green! But wait! It gets even better, because you have a chance to submit your shorts!

Major Resource Kit Theatre Production The Theatre Production major does not prepare students for immediate employment in professional theatre upon graduation from the University. However, should they decide to pursue theatre production as a career, graduates are competitive for applying to graduate training programs. Employment in the theatre, whether in the schools, university or commercial theatre, is extremely competitive, with only the most skilled and gifted succeeding. Positions that are sought after include teachers, promotions/public relations/management specialists, technicians, stage managers, scenic/lighting/costume designers, makeup artists, actors and directors. Education, stage, film and television are examples of popular fields. Majoring in theatre production enhances an individual's organizational and technical skills as well as written and oral expressive abilities. These skills and abilities are assets for many jobs outside of theatre that require an ability to communicate dynamically with others. To learn more about the major in Theatre Production or the minor in Theatre, contact Professor Joann Browning, Associate Chair, Theatre Department, 413 Academy Street, Newark, DE 19716, or call 831-2201, or email at
