Thomas Harper Der Ring des Nibelungen (1991 and 1995) and the witch in Hanzel und Gretel (1993) at the Seattle Opera. University Week Editor Nedra Floyd Pautler. UNIVERSITY WEEK: First, would you give us an idea of the span of your career? Have you held positions other than as a professional singer? HARPER: UWK: Der Ring des Nibelungen and the witch in Hanzel und Gretel . What are the most challenging aspects of each of these roles? Which is your favorite and why? H: Rheingold , and then an immense role in Siegfried Mime, in Siegrfied is, of course, my favorite of these three roles simply because there are many more colors and shapes of character that are set forth in the text. The possibilities for emotional development are particularly strong with this role, and the extreme variations of depression, anger, fear and wonder are very beautiful. Mime is in this sense a very human Nibelung. UWK: Before any particular performance how much chance do you have to think about your audience? There is the couple who are out on a date; the person who owns every major recording of the opera or the role you are performing; and the high school or college class attending the opera with their professor.

For Beginners
If you are interested in pursuing a career in music, you most likely can improve your talents by singing, performing and playing at every opportunity available to you where you live now: school music classes, choirs, band, orchestra, jazz band, church and community choirs, local music theater productions, private lessons, attending music workshops and camps, entering talent shows, etc. If you're looking for a teacher, a good place to start is your local music store (that sells instruments and equipment pertaining to the type of music you want to perform), your school music teachers, and local college music departments. Listed below are some instructional tape, video and print resources that may help you, as well as a list of music camps that we are aware of. You also might take a look at theme park entertainment or theater work available to you in your local area.
IBMA sponsors a Songwriter Showcase as a part of our annual Trade Show, with the purpose of introducing new bluegrass material to the industry. For more info on the next Songwriter Showcase, email us at nancyc@ibma.org

Undergraduate Degrees The School of Music offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Music (B.MUS.) in Music Performance, Music Composition, Music Education, Music Theory, and Music Therapy. We also offer a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in Music. All music majors follow a similar course of study for the first year of undergraduate study. At the beginning of the sophomore year a specific major will be selected for completion during the remaining years. If a student transfers to a major outside of the music field, the limited number of hours already earned in music may be used as a minor area, to fulfill elective requirements, or in some cases to fulfill core curriculum requirements. Bachelor of Arts - Music
The BACHELOR OF ARTS with a major in MUSIC is designed to allow students to study music without the focus of a particular professional major. The program is structured to provide a strong emphasis in applied music, theory, and music literature with a broad block of general education studies. The degree provides a foundation for professional pursuits in music and prepares the student to enter graduate study in music or other disciplines which accept a general liberal arts degree for entry. The degree is also useful for those who plan to pursue a career that requires a liberal arts education but no specific vocational training.
