W HAT'S A M USIC L IBRARIAN A music librarian is a librarian qualified to specialize in music. A broad musical background is essential, for music of any style, medium, or era can find a place in a library. Aptitude and training in both music and librarianship are necessary. W HERE ARE M USIC L IBRARIANS E MPLOYED Music librarians work in large research libraries such as the Library of Congress or the New York Public Library; in the music section or branch library in universities, colleges, and conservatories; in public libraries; in radio and television station libraries; with music publishers and dealers; with musical societies and foundations; and with bands and orchestras. W HAT D O M USIC L IBRARIANS D O The traditional responsibilities of librarians are at the heart of most music librarians' activities: organizing, cataloging, and maintaining collections; providing instruction in use of the library; answering reference inquiries; selecting music, books, journals, recordings, microforms, and sometimes manuscripts and other rare materials for acquisition. Music librarians recommend means of preservation and housing of materials in their custody and use electronic bibliographic and reference resources to their full potential. Librarians can take an active role in music scholarship by compiling bibliographies, pursuing research, or writing reviews of new publications. They often teach music bibliography and other classroom subjects within their areas of specialization. As members of professional organizations, they may serve on local, national, or international committees devoted to issues such as electronic information storage and retrieval, cataloging standards, education for librarianship, preservation, and library management. Within the library it might be their responsibility to organize training programs for staff, researchers, or interns.

You Want to be a Musician Entry is very competitive. In recent years the School has accepted fewer than half the candidates who have applied; in some performance media the acceptance rate is one in four or one in five. Because of the restricted number of places we cannot always offer admission to every qualified student. Therefore, to be sure of admission you need to demonstrate a high level of accomplishment in several of the following areas. Making Music Music Literacy Hands on! Your knowledge of music theory must also be at your fingertips. If your principal instrument is not piano, you will need to demonstrate basic keyboard skills. Check the requirements for the piano proficiency test. If you cannot play the required pieces, or if your sight reading at the piano is poor, it would be a good idea to take piano lessons before entry to the School. The School of Music does not offer remedial instruction in piano. Passing the piano proficiency test is an exit requirement, not an entry requirement. But smart money is on the student who has this skills well in hand. Music literacy is most effectively developed if it is cultivated hand in hand with your performance instruction. Make sure that your instrument teacher dedicates a little lesson time each week to explaining the theory that underlies what you practice. Do some drill work with your teacher. Test yourself regularly.

Pair hits a high note in school music careers
By Margot LeSage
Staff Writer PLAISTOW Like most people in the running for a major award, Timberlane High School students James Clark and John Elliott were saying it was an honor just to have been nominated to attend the All-Eastern Music Festival. So, it was a dream come true when they found out they would both be going to the three-day festival in Providence, R.I., next month. Only 14 students from New Hampshire will be at the festival, which celebrates achievement in music and vocal performance. Students from 11 East Coast states participate. "It's a very good opportunity because the best people up and down the coast will be there," said Clark, a junior from Danville who plays trumpet. "I'm also a little apprehensive ... Certainly I didn't expect two people from Timberlane to go." Elliott, 18, a senior tuba player who lives in Atkinson, agreed. "It's kind of scary, you don't want to mess up," he said. "I want a career in music and we're going to be playing with such awesome kids that I might be seeing down the road." Elliott, who's looking at schools such as the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and the New England Conservatory in Boston, wants to major in music performance. He said that's why attending this biannual music festival is so important.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education (MUE)
This degree program prepares students for careers in music teaching. Students completing this course of study receive public school music certification for kindergarten through high school. Since a person must first be a good musician in order to be a good music educator, the program includes substantial work in music theory, ear training, music history, applied music, ensembles, and conducting, in addition to music education methods courses and field experiences. Students elect (1) instrumental concentration, (2) vocal concentration, or (3) a combined program which includes major portions of both the instrumental and vocal concentrations.

Bachelor of Arts in Music (MUS)
This degree program is designed to provide the opportunity for a scholarly study of music to meet the needs of those who wish to obtain a liberal education with an emphasis on music and those who plan to do graduate work in music. The program aims to instill a thorough understanding of music and its relationship to contemporary society. The study of music history and theory is central in this curriculum. Sufficient flexibility is built into the program to allow the individual student to establish areas of emphasis both in music and in the arts and sciences.

Bachelor of Music in Performance (MUP)
This degree program is designed for those who wish to prepare for a career in music performance and/or applied music teaching, and those who plan to do graduate work in applied music. The program aims to instill a thorough understanding of music and its relationship to contemporary society. Private lessons; solo, chamber and large ensemble performance; and the study of literature and pedagogy of the major instrument are emphasized. Basic understanding of the standards and opportunities for professional performance leads the student to realistic expectations for a career as a performer or teacher.
