William Stace,

"I have a long way to go before reaching my goals in the 'recording industry,' but thanks to you, it's not just a dream anymore."
Jeffrey L. Kaehr, Student, Sweetwater Sound "I know, from my own experience, that this is the absolute best way to learn recording." John Lowson, Grammy-winning Engineer CLOSE-UP: Career Connection May, 1996 By Karen Orsi Curly in City Slickers said that the secret to happiness in life is based on one thing alone. Jim Petulla, founder of Career Connection has made it his "one thing" to solve the infamous Catch-22 dilemma about dreams and careersthat you can't get a job without experience and you can't get experience until you get the job. "We recognize that it's who you know that counts," he says. This is the basis for Petulla's Career Connectiona company that claims to help anyone get a job in almost any profession without formal training. Petulla's angle is the apprenticeship approach, made popular during the Renaissance, in which an apprentice begins working at a trade alongside a craftsman until he learns it well enough to make it his own. Career Connection has utilized this approach in placing over 5,000 beginners in some of the hottest and most competitive career fields, such as audio recording/engineering, video, film and journalism. For a fee, Career Connection can get you the crucial interview for your dream gig. But they also show you how to do it on your own.

Music Teaching If you are interested and enthusiastic about music then maybe you have what it takes to become a good music teacher. Teaching is a demanding role at the best of times. All schools teachers must be good communicators, organisers and managers. They must relate well to people and have the ability to exercise a considerable degree of understanding and patience.
We all remember a good teacher.
A Music teacher needs to have a love and understanding of their subject. They need to be versatile in all aspects of music and to be able to encourage their pupils to achieve their true potential.
There are a number of routes into music teaching. In Scotland the most popular is the four year B.Ed (Hons) which is the equivalent of the BA (Hons) Music with Qualified Teacher Status. Completing students on these courses can take up positions as either Secondary school teachers or as music specialists within primary schools.

CAREERS FOR A CHANGING MARKETPLACE by Nancy Uscher At first glance, the American-trained artists described here seem terribly familiar. They have the usual histories: The violinist earned a doctorate at Julliard, studying with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, and then spent a year in Vienna on a Fulbright scholarship. The young soprano was a music major at Connecticut College and president of her high school choir. The promising cellist graduated from the Eastman School of Music and went on to become principal cellist of an orchestra in Canada. With two degrees from the University of Houston, the composer earned a doctorate from Boston University and became an assistant professor there. th Walter Verdehr, a native of Gottschee, Yogoslavia, spent his early years in Austria. At the age of eight he received his first violin lesson and studied for two years in Graz, Austria, with Marianne Kroemer, who founded the European String Teachers Association. After coming to California with his parents, he met Sascha Jacobson at the Music Academy of the West and studied with him before attending Julliard. He subsequently joined the faculty at Michigan State University as the first violinist of the Beaumont Quartet. In 1971 he married Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, a clarinet Virtuoso and professor at the same university. Verdehr ha been active as a teacher and violin soloist, but one of his most remarkable career achievements has been the creation of the Verdehr Trio, cofounded with his wife and the pianist Gary Kirkpatrick. More than 30 new works have been commissioned for the ensemble.

Information and Suggestions compiled by Karen Stafford
You've just started college, or possibly you've completed a year or two and are contemplating a change. Time for decisions. Or, time to pick that major! And you (or your student)want to go into music. But, the questions are many: Do I possibly want to go into performing? Do I REALLY want to teach? Is there any other choice besides performing and teaching? Before you decide, you need to explore all the possibilities in music:
  • Teaching elementary (you can get certification in more than one field, too) Teaching secondary performance groups Teaching at the college level (this can be possible with just a performance degree, although the competition is stiff) Music historian Developing music software (great if you have a talent in computers and/or art) Making or repairing instruments Recording studios (in the booth itself) Managing performers (how are you at the art of persuasion?) Music therapy (a field getting more and more positive recognition)
