Music Teaching in Post-Secondary Schools Music teachers at institutions of higher education usually are expected to specialize in one or two areas, such as music theory, music history and literature, music education, musicology, performance, electronic music, composition, conducting, or music therapy. The salaries for college or university music teaching vary considerably with the type of institution and its location. In many cases, college faculties are recruited from people who have had successful professional careers as performers or as music teachers. A college music educator, however, usually must have earned at least a master's degree in music. A great many institutions require a doctorate. The music programs in institutions of higher education constitute one of the main sources of music standards and performances.

    Career Options
Careers Specific to the Bachelor's Degree
Career possibilities vary widely. B.M.E. degrees prepare students for certification as teachers of music in public schools, while B.M. performance degrees prepare students to pursue a performing career or teach their instrument in a private studio. The B.S. with an outside field degree allows students to combine music with another career, e.g., business or telecommunications. Students in the A.S. programs usually desire employment in technical positions in professional musical organizations or businesses.
Other Career Possibilities with a Bachelor's Degree
A graduate of a music program will develop thinking, writing, and problem solving skills that may qualify them for management and marketing positions in business or telecommunications.

Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
    • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Part-time schedules and intermittent unemployment are common; many musicians supplement their income with earnings from other sources.
    • Aspiring musicians begin studying an instrument or training their voices at an early age.
    • Competition for jobs is keen; those who can play several instruments and perform a wide range of music styles should enjoy the best job prospects.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Musicians, singers, and related workers play musical instruments, sing, compose or arrange music, or conduct groups in instrumental or vocal performances. They may perform solo or as part of a group. Musicians, singers, and related workers entertain live audiences in nightclubs, concert halls, and theaters featuring opera, musical theater, or dance. Although most of these entertainers play for live audiences, many perform exclusively for recording or production studios. Regardless of the setting, musicians, singers, and related workers spend considerable time practicing, alone and with their band, orchestra, or other musical ensemble. Musicians often gain their reputation or professional standing in a particular kind of music or performance. However, those who learn several related instruments, such as the flute and clarinet, and who can perform equally well in several musical styles, have better employment opportunities. Instrumental musicians, for example, may play in a symphony orchestra, rock group, or jazz combo one night, appear in another ensemble the next, and work in a studio band the following day. Some play a variety of string, brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments or electronic synthesizers.

    ATTORNEY, MUSIC BUSINESS
When considering the role of lawyers in music careers, it should be noted that the most problems and business opportunities involve the extension of the performer and creator beyond the setting of the concert hall. Most music lawyers express an ignorance of the musician's trade in the writing and performing of music, but those with some music training are obviously a step ahead. Most music lawyers spend little time in court. Litigation is but an extension of negotiation by other means. Music lawyers are a small community of specialists who exist in an environment where negotiated settlements serve client interests better than often costly and delayed litigation. The small music bar is centered largely in New York City and Beverly Hills. Some music lawyers are in corporate legal departments such as those of record companies, licensing societies (ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC), and publishers, but most are in small firms or individual practices. COMMUNITY ARTS MANAGER
The basic challenge of the community arts manager is to integrate fully the arts into the social and economic fabric of his or her community. In a fiscal environment of competing priorities, the arts program must serve real needs and get a response from a strong constituency or it will not survive long. The manager must identify the various segment of a community, whether business, educational, youth, political, or religious. He or she must determine their needs and interests, and incorporate these values and needs into a viable program. The manager must, therefore, possess some working knowledge of governmental and community processes and be able to translate the benefits and the needs of the arts into concepts that are easily grasped by these community forces.

Clearly, the largest number of full-time music teaching positions exists in public and private schools. In preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, and day-care centers, the music teacher provides guidance for activities such as singing, listening, playing instruments, moving and dancing, composing, and experimenting with music patterns. Teachers, supervisors, or directors of music in middle, junior high, and senior high schools provide direction for choral and instrumental organizations, small ensembles, and musical theater productions. Music instruction in the secondary school also includes courses in general music, theory, music history, literature, and the related arts. Music educators in the public schools may find opportunities for extra remuneration for service as conductors of church choirs, community music organizations, or recreational programs. In many communities, the music department of the public schools is the focal point of the community's musical life.

From these links you can locate many schools with music programs and from there you can locate the professors on staff. Most have a biography available and some have nice pictures. I will add more from time to time. (It will be impossible to add everyone's... ). If you are a professor who would like to have your site added, feel free to e-mail me and give me the address and I will include it.

I obviously can't begin to list every bio on every flute professor in the country. Not everyone has a web page. These are just some pages that I have come across so far from various Colleges and Universities offering photos, biographical information, email addresses and/or other contact info for Professors and Teachers of flute. I would love suggestions for any that I have missed that so that I might can include them. I also realize that people in teaching positions change from time to time and so I do apologize for any incorrect or outdated information. If anyone finds any mistakes in this list, I would really appreciate an email to bring it to my attention so that I can make the correction.
