    Careers in Music
Information and Suggestions compiled by Karen Stafford
You've just started college, or possibly you've completed a year or two and are contemplating a change. Time for decisions. Or, time to pick that major! And you (or your student)want to go into music. But, the questions are many: Do I possibly want to go into performing? Do I REALLY want to teach? Is there any other choice besides performing and teaching? Before you decide, you need to explore all the possibilities in music:
    • Teaching elementary (you can get certification in more than one field, too) Teaching secondary performance groups Teaching at the college level (this can be possible with just a performance degree, although the competition is stiff) Music historian Developing music software (great if you have a talent in computers and/or art) Making or repairing instruments Recording studios (in the booth itself) Managing performers (how are you at the art of persuasion?) Music therapy (a field getting more and more positive recognition)

W HAT'S A M USIC L IBRARIAN A music librarian is a librarian qualified to specialize in music. A broad musical background is essential, for music of any style, medium, or era can find a place in a library. Aptitude and training in both music and librarianship are necessary. W HERE ARE M USIC L IBRARIANS E MPLOYED Music librarians work in large research libraries such as the Library of Congress or the New York Public Library; in the music section or branch library in universities, colleges, and conservatories; in public libraries; in radio and television station libraries; with music publishers and dealers; with musical societies and foundations; and with bands and orchestras. W HAT D O M USIC L IBRARIANS D O The traditional responsibilities of librarians are at the heart of most music librarians' activities: organizing, cataloging, and maintaining collections; providing instruction in use of the library; answering reference inquiries; selecting music, books, journals, recordings, microforms, and sometimes manuscripts and other rare materials for acquisition. Music librarians recommend means of preservation and housing of materials in their custody and use electronic bibliographic and reference resources to their full potential. Librarians can take an active role in music scholarship by compiling bibliographies, pursuing research, or writing reviews of new publications. They often teach music bibliography and other classroom subjects within their areas of specialization. As members of professional organizations, they may serve on local, national, or international committees devoted to issues such as electronic information storage and retrieval, cataloging standards, education for librarianship, preservation, and library management. Within the library it might be their responsibility to organize training programs for staff, researchers, or interns.

    15. Careers for music graduates
Employment possibilities for music graduates vary between specialisations but are currently good. Openings exist in professional and semi-professional orchestras. Symphony orchestras and opera or ballet orchestras seek competent players and opportunities arise for casual players in choral accompaniment and amateur theatrical productions. The world of the solo performer is a fickle one and suited only to those with a formidable command of technique, great physical stamina and an appropriate mental constitution. Some opportunities for professional piano accompanists exist. Qualified music teachers are in demand in government and private schools to teach general class music and to organise and teach in instrumental music programs. Appropriately qualified private music teachers have little trouble building a practice, especially those using new technology such as the computer to assist in theory, training and creative music-making. Composers and music researchers generally have limited opportunities but some find employment at tertiary institutions. Most supplement their income by teaching or acting as critics or journalists for the media.
