A career in music therapy makes it possible to combine a love of music with a genuine interest in working with people. With a clear respect for human dignity, the music therapist structures musical experiences to assist people in discovering their full potential and in achieving desired behavioral changes. Music therapists have the rare opportunity to work with a variety of different people of differing agesfrom infants to older adults, from people who are developmentally delayed, mentally ill, or physically disabled to those who are learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, or chemically dependent. More innovative programs have been started for people with life-threatening illnesses, for battered women and abused children, as well as in birthing centers.

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC CAREERS: QUANTUM CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN A TRANSFORMING INDUSTRY
by Peter Spellman
www.mbsolutions.com

The beginning of a new year is a good time to reflect on where things are at and where things may be going in our industry. A few of my colleagues have expressed their views on "industry trends" and, as usual, their insights were penetrating and refreshing. As a complement to these contributions, I'd like to offer some thoughts not so much on trends in the biz, but on music career development amid these trends. I will try to open up some of these trends and look at their career implications and applications. I hope both musicians and industry careerists will gather some guidance for setting their sails amidst the mercurial waves of a transforming entertainment business. First, some noise from the trenches:
  • Of the 27,000 albums released last year by the recording industry, less than 5000 sold over 1000 units. Since 1988 only 16 classical albums have sold more than a million copies in the United States; five of them were put out by Victoria's Secret. The source of most music listening hours is neither Cds nor radio; it's video games.

After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance. Top of Page

Careers Sheet of Music
In 1996 we adopted what has become known as the Sheet of Music (SOM) philosophy for employee growth and development. Sheet of Music management translates corporate operational philosophy into coordinated and logical collective and individual actions. We want to use the individual SOM as a way to help employees reach a meeting of the minds with their managers about their work and personal goals at BAE SYSTEMS. We want to help employees meet their personal goals, while they help BAE SYSTEMS meet its business goals. The Sheet of Music is not intended as a complex or difficult document, but rather as a simple and succinct guidechart for your activities at BAE SYSTEMS. The goal is to get concentrated thought into what you should be doing and make sure that it meets both your personal goals and BAE SYSTEMS goals. Each employee should have their own personal Sheet of Music that has been developed and coordinated with their manager.

    Music journalism careers
This section contains excerpts from the ebook 'Journalism Careers: Your Questions Answered' , which answers 64 of your questions about working in - and breaking into - media. I've reproduced a couple of the answers specific to music journalism here. The full ebook has six questions specific to music journalism, tips on interview technique and pages of advice on getting started as a journalist, pitching stories to magazines successfully and freelancing.
How can I get into music journalism?
Here's a theory. To be a music journalist, you'll either need:
    • A good knowledge of the greats. You have to put today's music in context; or
    • To specialise in a particular type of music (eg, folk, country, trip-hop, ambient); or
    • To be a musician. This opens doors on the musicians' magazines.
There probably are opportunities if you don't fit those three categories, but it's a competitive marketplace so it's important you can differentiate yourself. Staff jobs do get advertised from time to time, but your best approach might be to work freelance. It'll give you the freedom to write about other subjects (so you can do non-music writing to bring your average pay up) and you'll have greater creative freedom by writing for different magazines.

Study in the field of music offers a general humanistic education, as well as specific skills in musical expression, appreciation and aesthetic sensitivity. The music major offers the student an opportunity to analyze, interpret and communicate the works and emotions of the masters of music through performance, while developing and expanding her/his own personal means of creative expression. Students who have majored in music may go on to careers as performers, directors or composers of music, but the skills and abilities developed by the discipline are also applicable in many other fields. The music major has learned to analyze and convey the ideas of others, to develop original ideas, to interact and communicate with others, to solve problems, to set goals, to motivate and to lead. Such skills can be applied in business and industry, church work, and community and arts organizations, and also equip the student for graduate school in disciplines such as law, business or education. OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
