  • Music Teaching in Elementary and Secondary Schools
Clearly, the largest number of full-time music teaching positions exists in public and private schools. In preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, and day-care centers, the music teacher provides guidance for activities such as singing, listening, playing instruments, moving and dancing, composing, and experimenting with music patterns. Teachers, supervisors, or directors of music in middle, junior high, and senior high schools provide direction for choral and instrumental organizations, small ensembles, and musical theater productions. Music instruction in the secondary school also includes courses in general music, theory, music history, literature, and the related arts. Music educators in the public schools may find opportunities for extra remuneration for service as conductors of church choirs, community music organizations, or recreational programs. In many communities, the music department of the public schools is the focal point of the community's musical life.

But once a song is written, there is a whole industry that supports it the "business" side of the music industry. Many people in the business started out playing music or singing in chorus in their high schools just like you. Some realized that their best talents were on the business side. by M. M. deCrinis
Since the beginning of recorded history, music has been an important part of human existence. Whether it be the beating of primitive drums, the wailing of an electric guitar, or the elegance of a violin concerto, music has been and continues to be an integral part of life throughout the world. Music stirs emotion, inspires peace, announces war, nourishes the hungry soul, accompanies both word and deed, and is said to have the power to "soothe the savage beast." Imagine our world without music:devoid of the magic and inspiration which it brings. A dismal vision, indeed, for music is a necessity of life; a spark igniting passion and creativity and a balm healing the wounds of humanity. Although competitive and consuming, a career in music can be immensely satisfying... if you have what it takes.
    Musicians
These talented individuals, who can create masterpieces from imagination, bring life to inanimate objects, and orchestrate sounds which delight the ear, will always be in demand. Musicians are important to the welfare of society, for music has the power to affect us psychologically, physiologically and spiritually.
Generally, musicians play musical instruments, sing, write musical compositions, orchestrate movements, or conduct instrumental or vocal performances. Musicians may perform alone or as part of a group. They usually perform before live audiences; on the radio; or in recording, TV or movie productions.

    Careers in Music
There exists a great diversity of choice for someone seeking employment in music related fields at the present time. However, very few of these options offer an adequate sole income. For example, very few composers are lucky enough to have an adequate income from composition alone; most will have to supplement their income with private teaching, tertiary teaching, etc. The same can be said for performers. There are many people who do make a relatively good income from several sources, often all in music related fields. For instance it is quite common to find people working simultaneously as freelance performers, composers (often for film or television) as well as doing private instrumental teaching. This diversity of options means that it is possible to construct a complementary combination of income-earning skills based upon a person's individual talents and interests providing that some care is given to initial planning. It also takes a significant amounts of time and dedication to become established in the chosen areas. There are many lucrative career opportunities that have a component of music as well involving other skills. This is particularly true in areas involving technology and computers. Computer literacy is a distinct advantage in almost all areas of employment and is particularly important in some areas of music. The rapid development of digital technologies has made some employment options redundant while at the same time creating a wealth of new opportunities. These new technologies have implications in all areas of music from academic studies to performance, composition and beyond.

    Careers In Music Publishing
By Dale Kawashima A publishing career may not seem quite as glamorous as working for a record label, but it is just as creative, and often provides more stability and job security. When the corporate powers are deciding which employees should be fired at their struggling music divisions, they usually start with the top execs at the record label. This is because publishing has always been looked upon as a very long-term business, where the royalties and profits are projected to develop at a steady but more gradual pace. As could be expected, competition is absolutely fierce for these top creative jobs. Most execs start out as interns or assistants, pay their dues, and work their way up the corporate ladder. However, sometimes a person will prove their creative success in a related field (as an artist, manager, club booker, music journalist, radio programmer, etc) and jump right into a high-level, exec position. Another, sought after creative position is that of a "songplugger." This job previously entailed simply plugging songs demos for current recording artists who needed outside songs. But over the past decade, it has evolved into developing writer/producers, and setting them up to collaborate with artists, because most acts today insist on co-writing most of the material for their albums. The licensing department works hand-in-hand with the film and TV staff to negotiate the best fees for each song usage, and to help close each deal. The licensing execs play a crucial role in the song-placement process. They must develop great relationships with their licensing counterparts at the film and TV studios, or else many deals will fall through.
