Leaving
Question
I'm not sure if you'll be able to answer this question, but perhaps you'll know the answer due to your relationships with other military personnel, if not from your own experience.
What I'd like to know is the process for leaving the military after being overseas. Let's say, you were overseas in a branch of the military and your time was up and you were going home and were going to carry on with a normal, citizen-ish domestic life. You're parting from the military. What processes would take place to make this happen once you got back on US soil? Answer Greetings Luke - Although there are several different situations that are unique to various geographic regions, there are many procedures which are fairly generic. Everyone in the military earns vacation time (leave) at a rate of 2.5 days per month. Most people who are planning to leave the military save up their vacation time. This allows them to transition back to civilian life while still earning a full-time military paycheck. There is also a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) that also helps the person write resume's, and prepare to make that change from uniform to business suit.

Military Personnel Assignments at DFAS
How can I volunteer for an assignment with DFAS?
Army: Officers and enlisted will have to request a DA Form 4187 (Personnel Action Request) from their servicing orderly rooms, Personnel Administration Center or Personnel Service Branch, depending on where you are stationed. For example, you might be stationed at a Battalion level, Brigade level, etc. Both officer and enlisted personnel have to be released from their old duty station by the Commander. The completed DA Form 4187 is used by PERSCOM to make your job/assignment selection. Most Army officers have the opportunity to choose the assignment they want and it is usually approved. Assignment selection for enlisted is based on the needs of the Army first. All Army personnel should ensure their records are updated. Navy: For both officers and enlisted contact your occupational specialty detailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Several avenues are available to you including telephone and the Internet.

DFAS Army Element
An Army Element is an Army Organization. It is the nomenclature for manpower authorizations, identification and command of officers, noncommissioned officers and soldiers on duty with agencies outside the Army. These personnel are the "Army Element" of the agency where they perform duty. An Army Element is analogous to a unit for purposes of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and administrative actions. The element provides for an unbroken chain of command for the assigned military who must be assigned to a unit at all times, although they may be attached to other organizations, departments, agencies, etc. The Army Element exists for military command and control. The day to day management, supervision and guidance is provided to the military personnel through the management structure within the agency of assignment. For example, Army Element soldiers assigned to an DFAS site work for that site.

Military Careers
The student who wishes a career in the military also needs to plan ahead. To go in as enlisted personnel, the student will need to have a highshool diploma because the services do not accept GED's alone. Parents might jump this hurdle by enrolling their student in a homeschool umbrella program through a private school; the school does not have to be accredited. The highschool diploma would then be from the private umbrella school. Check with the nearest military recruiter in the service branch your student is considering to make sure the school you are appraising is one they are familiar with. Some recruiters do not know that non-accredited private school graduates are considered highschool graduates for all enlistment purposes. This policy was clearly stated in a letter dated October 31, 1991, to Representative Dick Armey from W.S. Sellman of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. See Insert A.
Umbrella programs have specific graduation requirements that your student will be responsible to satisfy. The school keeps a transcript of your student's course of study and grades, issuing a diploma from the school when the graduation requirements are completed. Basically, your homeschool is operating as an extension classroom of the private school. Some schools require you use certain curricula, while others allow you great latitude in the materials from which your student studies.
There are many private schools in Oregon that offer such programs. Check with your nearest private school to see if they already have or would consider starting such a program. Three that we know of are as follows:
