External Links Marine Biology as a career Of all the ocean sciences, marine biology is by far the most well known and popular to the general public. This is largely due to the popularity of television programmes and books about the natural world, which have made people aware of the beauty and diversity of marine life forms.
First of all I need to correct a major misconception - marine biologists rarely if ever work with large marine mammals such as whales and dolphins - that type of work is mainly the domain of zoologists, and the number of vacancies world-wide is very small, unless you are willing to work unpaid for one of the various marine wildlife charities or pressure groups. Marine biologists often work at the opposite end of the size spectrum, analysing, classifying and counting bacteria, plankton, algae and less glamorous creatures such as shrimps, worms and fish larvae. Gathering surface plankton in the Indian Ocean Marine biologists are interested in the processes of how marine organisms develop, relate to one another, adapt to their environment and interact with it. With increasing knowledge of how these plants and animals live today, predictions can be made about how marine ecosystems will cope with changes such as global warming, pollution, pressure from fisheries and even damage caused by tourism in sensitive areas. Some marine biologists work closely with geologists to examine fossil marine organisms, which can give important clues about climate conditions in the past.

What is Oceanography?
(Thanks to: International Oceanographic Foundation "Oceanography" is a broad field in which many sciences are focused on the common goal of understanding the oceans. Since the ocean comprises the largest ecosystem on earth, study of the ocean ecosystems is critical to understanding man's effects on the biosphere. Persons specializing in Botany, cartography, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, geophysics, limnology, mathematics, medicine, meteorology, and zoology all play roles in expanding our knowledge of marine environments. "Marine biology" is the study of life in the world's oceans, seas, bays and estuaries (in other words, in salt water), but requires an understanding of freshwater systems as well. It includes the study of all living marine organisms (from bacteria to whales) and their physical marine environment. The field of oceanography is usually broken down into sub-disciplines, including:

Careers in Marine Science
What does a Marine Biologist do?
Two-thirds of our planet is covered with ocean and just about every field within science can use the oceans and ocean life as a subject for study. Many scientists involved in marine biology are primarily ecologists, zoologists or botanists who study an organism or organisms that live in the sea. Marine science can also include archaeology, anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Ocean science, or oceanography, is the study of the global marine environment, from the polar seas to coral island lagoons. In their studies, marine scientists combine direct observation with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control the earth's oceans. Recent concerns about global warming have encouraged scientists to view ocean science and earth science in a more holistic way in order to understand the global system as a whole. This and the plain fact that so much of the world's oceans have yet to be explored make for many exciting possibilities in the immediate future. Biological Oceanography focuses on marine organisms and how marine microbes, plants, and animals interact with each other and with the physical, chemical, and geological processes in the ocean. Biological processes in the ocean play a critical role in the total Earth system, particularly in the cycling of important biogeochemical materials such as carbon and in solar energy capture and conversion into organic material. Biological oceanographers study the distributions and abundance of marine organisms in the open ocean, coastal zone, and estuaries, both in the water column and on the seafloor.

90. Marine Biology
But, if marine biology is definitely what you want to do, it can be a very rewardingcareer follow your dreams, study hard, and the world s your oyster!
http://www.btinternet.com/~Jess.Jones/marbio.htm
Definition: The study of plant and animal life in the world's oceans, rivers and lakes. Required qualifications: Usually, at least a BSc. (Bachelor of Science) in Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology or another biological science. Course lengths vary, but in the UK undergraduate courses in science usually last 3-4 years. In general, a Masters degree is the first opportunity students have to specialise in marine mammals.
  • In the UK: To gain entry onto a biological science degree course usually requires A Levels or equivalent in Biology and Chemistry plus one other subject, preferably Physics or Maths. The required grades vary depending on which university you apply for. In the US: A broad range of subjects, with good grades, is essential for your high school studies.
Other skills: Good background in all the sciences, plus good IT skills and mathematics skills. Languages skills can also be useful depending on where you are working around the world. Salary: Varies, but the starting salary is usually about £15,000 ($30,000 approx.), going up to £30,000 ($60,000). The better your qualifications, the higher your salary! Marine biology is the study of all animal and plant life that lives under water - both in the sea and in rivers and lakes. This ranges from tiny, single-celled organisms, to coral, to marine mammals such as whales and dolphins. Marine biologists try to find out more about how marine organisms survive - such as hunting and feeding techniques; defence against predators; courtship and mating rituals; and how they interact with the surrounding environment. The actual job is usually a combination of field work and lab work, with large amounts of time also devoted to writing up reports.

Marine Science: Educational and Career Outlook What is Marine Science? What are the Educational Requirements? Careers and Salary Outlook Related Areas of Study WHAT IS MARINE SCIENCE? Marine Science is the study of the oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. It includes the study of the plants, anmials and microorganisms of these waters; as well as the physics, chemistry, and geology of the land and water. Marine Science also encompasses the study of the importance of the oceans to the natural environment and human impacts on the marine environment. Marine Scientists may work in laboratories or in the field, gathering and interpreting data and material which may be collected in many ways. Socially, the importance of Marine Science as a profession and field of study is clear, based on the fact that the majority of the world's population lives within close proximity to the ocean. Marine environments are important sources of recreation and economic activity. Environmentally, the field will continue to gain importance as the health of marine environments is compromised by coastal development and many other environmental pressures, and with the continued evolution of laws related to the marine environment, such as the Marine Mammals Protection Act.
