Questions? Email us In its broadest sense, marine biology is the study of any aspect of the biology of marine organisms. Likewise, freshwater biology is the study of any aspect of the biology of freshwater organisms. Thus, when thinking about careers, it is useful to keep in mind that marine and freshwater biologists study not just the ecology of aquatic organisms, but also their anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, parasitology, developmental biology, etc . The best preparation for someone interested in a career in marine or freshwater biology is a broad education that includes coursework in animal and plant biology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, organic chemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics. Courses in geology, hydrology, or GIS (geographic information systems) might also be appropriate, depending on your interests. The ECSU Biology Department offers several courses that enable students interested in marine or freshwater biology to study aquatic organisms in the laboratory or in the field, including: Bio 125 Organismal Biology Bio 320 Tropical Biology (includes field trips to Belize, the Bahamas, or Bermuda)

Oceanographer/Marine Biologist
Oceanographers help us gain a better understanding of how our oceans, and living creatures in them, function as an ecosystem. Oceanography contains a wide range of jobs including engineers, marine biologists, and zoologists (people who study animals). People with skills in these and other areas are involved in oceanography because Earth has more oceans than land, and it is a huge task to understand how the oceans work. One of the better-known careers in oceanography is marine biology. While oceanographers study oceans as a whole, marine biologists focus on the living creatures in different types of water, not just huge oceans. They also study life in seas, bays, and other large bodies of water. Oceanographers may also be technicians who specialize in working on equipment used to study the oceans. Oceanography needs technicians who are able to work on boats, electronics, and specialty equipment to make sure that their experiments run smoothly. Oceanographers also get to travel quite a bit to do research and experiments. Although some oceanographers write technical reports in a lab, others explore the oceans. If you enjoy the water, or marine animals then you should think about a career in oceanography.

MARINE CAREERS: The Scientist by William R. Hall and Elizabeth A. Chajes Like people who work at other Sea Grant Colleges and marine institutions, we receive many calls from people who want to find out more about careers related to the ocean. Some are interested in careers like commercial fishing or diving, but most callers want to know how to become marine scientists. Many people associate marine science only with marine biology. However, marine science, or oceanography, includes many other exciting careers. There are several thousand marine scientists at work in the United States today. Approximately 40% are employed with state and federal government, 30% in universities and colleges, and 30% in private industry. If you think you'd like to be a marine scientist, the following information should help you prepare for your future career. If you find out that marine science isn't for you, but you still want to work on or near the ocean, don't give up. There are dozens of rewarding careers related to the sea. Check out our video called "Marine Careers" and the other resources listed at the end of this note for information about work in other marine fields. Become a Professional Marine Scientist
Your preparation is the objective of the certificate program in Living Marine Resource Ecology. The certificate you earn along with a bachelor of science in Biological Science will prepare you to enter a marine profession, such as conservation and fisheries, or to pursue graduate work (M.S. or Ph.D.). You will experience hands-on marine biology and conduct research with marine scientists. You will gain awareness of the great issues and challenges of marine science and conservation. Most of all, you will be able to contribute to advancing knowledge and to meeting those challenges. Applying to the program: If you are in high school or community college, please indicate your interest when you apply for university admission. If you are a FSU lower-division student, you may formally apply for program admission as soon as you successfully complete the Biological Science core course sequence for majors with an average grade of 3.0 or higher (usually after the freshman or sophomore year). Upper-division students who have the required courses and grades may apply retroactively no later than the first semester of the senior year. The certificate requires completion of 16 credit hours of course work (see details below) with an average of 3.0 or higher.
