Dear Amanda,
The job market for marine biologists/oceanographers is a far cry from
the high tech market of today but as environment and the oceans
issues become more of a priority the job market will grow. I don't
have specific statistical numbers but I know from experiences that
several students and past volunteers and interns do get hired in this
field. Please check out the career page on WhaleNet as it lists many
different areas to investigate if you are serious about pursuing a
marine related career. I became a biologist while working for this non-profit organization and although the administrative work is plentiful I do get time in the field.

Take the time to read through these guides. You will find that most of your questions will be answered through the incredible variety and depth of career information represented by these sites. This career directory is divided into three sections: general guides for oceanography and marine science; guides for marine biology, marine mammals, zoos and aquariums; and other guides covering all of science. If you are interested in marine biology, most of the general guides encompass marine biology so look at them too - don't confine yourself to the marine biology guides if you are interested in marine biology One place to find colleges offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in subjects like marine biology is Petersons at www.petersons.com/ GENERAL GUIDES

Very truly yours,. Steven K Webster, Ph.D. Senior marine Biologist Monterey Bay Aquarium. For information about careers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, click here.

Dear students: Marine biology is a graduate level pursuit, and so the first priority is to obtain a strong undergraduate major in biological sciences. If you already have a strong interest in fishes, or marine mammals, or ecology, etc., you will want to choose a college or university with some strength in those areas, and this can generally be gleaned from a reading of the catalog from virtually any school. Most major colleges and universities can provide a good basic biology preparation. Math through calculus, some statistics, and some computer science should also be included to round out the preparation in the major. Selecting the graduate school is more directed to specialization. One should not plan to study crab reproduction at a school where no professors are involved in that specialty, so some ground work has to be done to determine where the people are located who are involved in the desired area of concentration. Your priority interests have, one hopes, been identified by the end of the undergraduate years, so you then go into the current scientific literature at a university library to determine who is publishing in the desired field of interest. For instance, if population biology or behavior among elephant seals is the area of interest, a review of the literature would lead you to U.C. Santa Cruz and Dr. Burney La Boeuf. Or, if your interest is in coastal ecology, the literature might lead to Dr. Paul Dayton at Scripps. Coral reef ecology would be Dr. John Ogden at Florida Atlantic, etc. If you are not sure of the specialty, then most schools with marine stations can provided coursework in general marine biology, and a specialty can be identified while working towards your Masters degree. Hopefully, a change of institution will not be required, but that's all right even if it is.

Marine Biology is the study of the living resources of the world's oceans and coastal seas. In tropical regions, shallow water environments support rich and diverse biological communities. These include coral reefs, mangrove and sea grass habitats. Training in Marine Biology is central to the study of these diverse assemblages of plants and animals and is the key to understanding their relationships and evaluating human influence on marine ecosystems. back to the top Related Career Titles for

These are links to places where one can find information about careers in specific fields of biology. For the most part these pages are maintained by the professional/scientific organization whose speciality is that area. Career information is divided into the rather broad categories of "Molecular and Cellular" and "Organismal and Field" . Some sites are fairly general and are listed in both categories. There is also a listing of some sites that provide information on specific jobs and internships . For more generic information about finding a job, look at the information provided by ESU's Career Placement Office
Finding a career, whether it be in biology or not, is often a difficult process. For some help in this area, look at the page Career Exploration on the Internet . This page guides you through this process starting with an exploration of self.

CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY: OUTLOOKS The Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla, California, often gets requests for information on marine biology careers. The following was prepared in answer to the most frequently asked questions. WHAT DOES A MARINE BIOLOGIST/SCIENTIST DO? Although many people today are familiar with the term "marine biologist," most don't realize that, in reality, the job title of marine biologist rarely exists. The term is actually used for many disciplines and jobs in the marine sciences which deal with the study of marine life, not just for those which deal with the physical properties of the seathough many biologists study both. So a marine biologist might be a biological technician, ichthyologist, fishery biologist, marine mammalogist, microbiologist, systems analyst, or a mathematician. Even economists and sociologists, who deal with living marine resource issues, are found within the so-called field of marine biology. In addition, other marine scientists concern themselves exclusively with the physical and chemical aspects of the sea, such as physicists, hydrologists, and physical oceanographers. http://www.cofc.edu/~grice/Undergraduate/careers.htm
CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY What Marine Biologists Do Marine Biology as a Career More recently there has been an increased awareness among citizens, as well as among governmental and corporate decision-makers, that environmental studies will result in recognizable benefits to the public and that they deserve to be supported. Examples of problems that prompted this awareness are unfortunately familiar: serious reductions in stocks of harvested species, major oil spills, human-originated debris washing up on beaches, and major environmental problems arising in heavily impacted estuaries like Chesapeake Bay. Conflicting needs and limited resources quite clearly necessitate a more educated management of the environment. At present, the job market is still tight, but the prospects for well-trained professionals in Marine Biology are on the rise. Marine Biology at the College of Charleston To be professionally successful in marine biology, it is advisable to attend graduate school after you complete your undergraduate education. Perhaps unexpectedly, a majority of marine biologists had no training in marine biology as undergraduates; they did not obtain their Bachelor's degrees in Marine Biology, Marine Science, or Oceanography. Typically, a marine biologist received a Bachelor's degree in Biology. A concentration in marine biology usually began in graduate school. Each Marine Biology major completes a minimum of 34 semester hours in biology in addition to courses in chemistry, geology, physics, mathematics, and the liberal arts. The first biology course (required of all majors) is a two-semester foundations course which serves to introduce students to the underlying principles of biology. Following the introductory course, individual programs of study are planned by students and their advisors. Some students also have the opportunity to do a research project for academic credit before graduating.

UK students have successfully found employment with a number of organisations such as DFID, WWF and environmental consultancies. PhD graduates have been similarly successful in finding employment and we are pleased that most of them remain in touch with members of the School. Many applicants for undergraduate courses are interested to know the range of careers chosen by Newcastle Marine Biologists. We are interested to keep in touch with graduates and are keen to follow the careers of students we have come to know well. Career choices have been surveyed 2 years after graduation for more than 25 years. Questionnaire returns from the last 5 years show that Marine Biologists are very employable and that more than 90% are happily settled in posts after 2 years. Remember that a degree not only improves your subject knowledge but also equips you with many skills, which are of interest to employers.
