If present trends continue, about half of those graduates will have found permanent positions as independent researchers within ten years after graduation. These statisticsand the labor market situation they reflectcan be viewed either positively or negatively depending on whether one is a young scientist seeking a career or an established investigator whose productivity depends on the labor provided by an abundant number of graduate students.

March 22, 2004. Pick a poly or JC for life sciences career? If she wants to pursue a career in the life sciences, should she enter a JC or a polytechnic?
    http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/women/expert/0,5350,241632,00.html
    JUNE 8, 2004 TUE Updated 08.54 AM
March 22, 2004 Pick a poly or JC for life sciences career?
MY DAUGHTER, who has been studying at Serangoon Junior College since January, has just received her O-level results, and she qualifies for both a JC and a polytechnic. Initially, she wanted to stay on at a JC. Now she is wondering if she should enter a polytechnic instead. Which would be easier or better for her if she wants to go abroad to do her degree? She is interested in pursuing a diploma in either medical technology or biotechnology. What are the career prospects for both? Can you list some websites for overseas universities whose certificates are well recognised here? If she wants to pursue a career in the life sciences, should she enter a JC or a polytechnic? Madam Chua Han Min, via e-mail THERE is no 'better' or 'easier' route to education. It depends very much on your child's values, interests and abilities. After three months at a JC, your daughter seems to have some reservations about continuing her education via that route. I would suggest she meets the career counsellors at her JC or any polytechnic to help her assess her interests and abilities before she makes a decision.
