Virginia Summer Residential School for the Life Sciences and Medicine at VCU
A Unique Summer Experience
The program curriculum included three main facets: academic exposure to medicine and life sciences, career exposure, and social and cultural interaction through extracurricular activities and residential life. Among the most unique activities in the classroom were the laboratory experiences led by Dr. Luis Ozaki, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. From amplifying DNA of mosquitoes using the polymerase chain reaction techniques to testing the effect of growth factor on cancerous cells, students were exposed to a wide variety of lab-based activities within the fields of life sciences and medicine in order to further develop their own laboratory skills. The program also helped students explore their own interests in the disciplines of life sciences. Students submitted a required research proposal and, with the help of mentor teachers, professors and teachers at their home schools, they were encouraged to develop the project later in the academic year, and to take part in the Virginia Junior Academy of Science (VJAS) competition. Each summer participant proposed an idea in his or her area of interest, developed the idea through research and teacher assistance, and presented the research proposal to judges at a symposium during the final week.
