Is it what it says on the can? The consumer has the trading standards officer to thank for not being sold underweight groceries or electrical equipment that fails to work. Or at least this is how the work is popularly seen, raising the spectre of inspectors concentrating on in-depth investigation of the contents of Belgian chocolate boxes and the specific gravity of local ales.
This is not the job for anyone who craves the comfort of the office. Inspectors get out and about to all sorts of trade premises from petrol stations to factories. Visits may include the taking of samples to be analysed for checks on the quality and legality of goods. Sometimes warrants will be served, despite often vocal objections from traders. Adding further excitement, some work may be undercover when criminal investigations are being undertaken.
Dealing with people in a variety of situations is an important aspect of the job. Decisions may have to be announced sensitively to the people affected. There will also be a need to give advice to both traders and consumers. Written communication skills are needed for reports and advice documents.

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP?
KDFWR is an equal opportunity employer who participates in a civil service merit employment system. The merit system is used by all agencies in the Executive Branch of Kentucky State Government and is designed to allow the best possible applicants to distinguish themselves through competitive testing. The first step in the process is to complete an application form available either from this agency or from the Department of Personnel http://personnel.ky.gov and return it to 200 Fair Oaks Lane, Suite 517, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601. Upon receipt, an employment counselor reviews the application and determines if the applicant meets the minimum requirements for the job classifications in which he or she expresses interest. If the applicant has satisfied the minimum requirements, the counselor will approve the applicant for competitive testing or other selection method assigned to the job classification. Once a certificate of applicants is issued by the Personnel Cabinet and forwarded to our agency, we can consider, interview and ultimately make a selection. Selections can be made only from the applicants who appear on the certificate.
