Career Opportunities for Majors in Criminal Justice
Introduction
Employment opportunities exist for Criminal Justice majors in all areas of the legal, law enforcement, and justice systems. Students receive instruction on the theories and practices pertaining to the criminal justice system, crime prevention, and public and corporate responses to crime on the local, national, and international level. Students are also prepared to pursue graduate coursework in law or public policy as well as many other criminal justice related disciplines. If a graduate with a Bachelor's degree is looking for employment after graduation, opportunities exist at the managerial level in county, state, and federal criminal justice agencies, centers of research concerned with criminal justice policies and practices, and international organizations. While many graduates work in a related occupation, others choose fields which do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choice, increase your marketability to employers through internships, related work or volunteer experiences, good grades, and involvement in college activities.

"The safety and well being of our Nation's citizens greatly depends on the police officers, detectives, and special agents responsible for enforcing statutes, laws, and regulations. Duties vary widely by the size and type of organization but in most jurisdictions, whether on or off duty, law enforcement officers are expected to exercise their authority whenever necessary. And, regardless of where they work or what they do, police, detectives, and special agents must spend considerable time writing reports and maintaining records that are needed when legal actions require them to testify in court." -http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos160.htm

Employment Opportunities
Criminal Justice is a broad field with professionals serving as law enforcement officers, probation and parole officers, correctional officers and counselors, and in other specialties.
Length of Program
The college has several degree and certificate options to prepare those choosing criminal justice professions. Each program has been structured to enable students to function effectively in these important and rewarding careers. Degree programs require 64 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 (C) grade point average to graduate. The Certificate Program requires 33 credit hours and can be completed in one year.

Rather than focusing on the mechanics of statistical calculation (although there is a fair amount of this), Prof. Walker has instead given readers a vehicle through which they might comprehend the meaning of the numbers they have labored to produce (as the title implies). About IRS
Criminal Investigation (CI) At-a-Glance
Mission: Criminal Investigation (CI) serves the American public by investigating potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code and related financial crimes in a manner that fosters confidence in the tax system and compliance with the law. Headquarters: 1111 Constitution Ave NW
Room 2527
Washington, DC 20224 Management: Nancy J. Jardini , Chief, Criminal Investigation Rick Speier , Deputy Chief, Criminal Investigation Overview: IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) is comprised of approximately 2,900 Special Agents whose investigative jurisdiction includes tax, money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act laws. While other federal agencies also have investigative jurisdiction for money laundering and some bank secrecy act violation, IRS is the only federal agency that can investigate potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code. Compliance with the tax laws in the United States relies heavily on self-assessments of what tax is owed. This is called voluntary compliance. When individuals and corporations make deliberate decisions to not comply with the law, they face the possibility of a civil audit or criminal investigation which could result in prosecution and possible jail time. Publicity of these convictions provides a deterrent effect that enhances voluntary compliance.

Criminal Investigation
Laura French, Star Tribune Sales and Marketing October 12, 2003 Forget what you've seen on TV: Today's crime scene investigations often have less to do with smoking guns and DNA than with e-mails and PDAs (personal digital assistants). That's why Kroll Ontrack, headquartered in Eden Prairie, is setting the standard with its computer forensics services. Data Recovery Specialists Kroll Ontrack has been offering data recovery services since 1985. That's the company's core competency, and Kroll Ontrack is still the place companies call if the systems administrator comes to work one morning to discover that half the data have gone missing. The company is so good at recovering data that it can find information on a hard drive that's been over-written up to a dozen times. That's led to a new specialty: recovering "e-evidence" - the e-mails and other electronic files that can be used as evidence in civil or criminal litigation. Trillions and Trillions of E-Documents The statistics are mind-boggling: In 2002, there were an estimated 3.25 trillion e-mails. E-mails and other electronic documents are stored on many different platforms, from computer hard drives, floppy disks and CD-ROMs to PDAs and even cell phones. More than 95 percent never get printed. Yet any one of them might be the evidence needed to win a case in court - or, better yet, reach a settlement before the trial.

Law enforcement careers usually fall into three catagories local Complete a backgroundinvestigation. must complete a nine week criminal investigators course.
http://www.policeemployment.com/report/
School Reports
We often get requests for law enforcement information to be used in a school report. Therefore, we have listed on this page some general information about the various jobs. Law enforcement careers usually fall into three catagories: local, state and federal jobs.
Local Law Enforcement
Local law enforcement consists of the city police department and the county sheriff's office. City police officers are responsible for enforcing local and state laws within the city limits. New recruits usually spend time on the street patrolling a certain area of the city. After several years on the job, they are then eligible for a promotion to the rank of sergeant, lieutenant, detective, SWAT team, etc.
Deputy sheriffs are responsible for enforcing the laws within the county in which they work. This can include the city limits, but their work usually takes them into more rural areas. In most states, the sheriff is responsible for housing local prisoners. Some sheriffs' offices require that a deputies also work in the jail as well as on the street. Other sheriffs' departments see this as two separate functions, corrections and policing, and do not require their deputies to work in the jail. Most sheriffs' offices follow a career ladder of sergeant, lieutenant, captain, etc.
The general requirements for most local law enforcement jobs are as follows: 1. Must be a U.S. citizen. 2. Minimum age is usually 20 or 21. 3. Must possess a valid driver's license. 4. Must have a high school diploma or a GED certification. 5. No felony convictions. 6. Must pass a physical fitness test. 7. Must pass a written entrance test. 8. Must pass an oral interview. 9. Complete a background investigation. 10. Must pass a polygraph test. 11. Must pass a psychological evaluation and medical examination.
