Acoustics and You
(A Career in Acoustics?)
Q:
What do all of these people have in common?
A:
Their work deals with ACOUSTICS. Acoustics is the science of sound. It relates to recorded music, to speech and hearing, to the behavior of sound in concert halls and buildings, and to noise in our environment. Sound waves are used in medical diagnosis, for testing critical materials, and for locating fish in the ocean or oil-bearing rock formations underground.
Q:
What career opportunities are available for me in ACOUSTICS?
A:
The field of ACOUSTICS, because it is so diverse, offers many different career opportunities. We have asked experts in several branches of acoustics to mention some of the opportunities that exist in their particular fields.
Architectural Acoustics
Architectural acoustics deals with sound in and around buildings of all kinds. Good acoustical design ensures the efficient distribution of desirable sounds as well as the exclusion of undesirable sound. It is the branch of acoustics that comes most readily to mind when a layperson thinks of "acoustics." Nearly everyone is aware of the importance of good acoustical design in concert halls, recording studios, auditoriums, and churches. But people spend more of their time in homes, offices, factories, or classrooms where little or no attention may have been given to the acoustical environment. Good acoustics should, and can, be engineered during the design of the building, since changes at a later time are expensive.

Project Management Careers
Project Management is the management of “a temporary endeavor undertaken to achieve a particular aim and to which project management techniques can be applied, regardless of the project’s size, budget or timeline” (Project Management Institute). Project management as a separate management expertise began to emerge in the late 1950s and early 1960s when individual projects were seen as being vital to company development, and time, duration and resources needed more analysis. Project management skills are very sort-after commodities in the business world, this management area being seen as very intensive and needing good leadership skills as well as the need for tight planning, control, and information analysis. Areas covered by project management include integration, scope, time, control, quality, human resources, communications, risk management and procurement. A career in project management often arises out of a career in another management area, such as engineering management. Certain industries lend themselves to this, such as engineering, the oil and gas industry, software development, hardware development and others. Individuals find that they are increasingly involved in management on a project basis, and decide that they will take their personal development down this path. Training can take several different paths, but mostly managers who have started to work in this area decide to strengthen their abilities by taking a course leading qualifications or certification, for instance PMP (Project Management Professional) or CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) awarded by the Project Management Institute. This allows them to not only increase their knowledge base, but to have external verification of their abilities in this area.
