The Clerk II performs moderately complex clerical work but limits decisions to those following established precedents or departmental policy. Usually employees in this classification are at the second level of training in insurance. Tasks may include semi-technical work relating to underwriting, adjusting and other specialized insurance activities

    As a graduate with a good degree from SBS, a variety of careers will be open to you (see the Figure below, and the sub-section 'Careers in Biological Sciences'). There are careers for which a Biological Sciences degree is essential, and careers for which Biological Sciences provides a useful base. In addition, there are careers open to graduates and postgraduates from any discipline. These include, for example, careers in management training, accountancy, teaching, nursing, social work, the police and the armed forces. However, employers are usually looking for general or transferable skills, and a Biological Sciences degree arguably provides a unique combination of these.

    Second careers in administration
    (March 2003) Administration is everybody's business. It is about co-ordinating resources, systems, procedures and services. It is about oiling the wheels of the organisational machine. It is one of the largest occupational areas in the UK and is essential to any customer-focused company.
    Technological advances and flatter structures mean that more people now have a responsibility for administrative tasks within their jobs. Almost a third of all people in employment in the UK are actively involved in administrative tasks as part of their day-to-day work. About half of them are employed in clerical or secretarial roles; the rest are managers or administrators. The number of managerial, administrative and technical jobs is an estimated 10.5 million, whilst the number of manual jobs is down to 7.3 million.
    The position of an administrator is best illustrated by the company secretary although the function is fulfilled in a range of positions. The job title varies and may include secretary to the trustees, administration or human resources manager or officer, or office manager.
    Properly qualified administrative managers play a major part in the legal running of an organisation. They keep a watchful eye on legislation affecting the organisation in human resources, finance, facilities, equipment resources and information technology. The range of duties varies considerably depending on the nature and size of the organisation, and this diversity is attractive for many people.

    Businesses of every type employ clerical, administrative and secretarial staff, including the Civil Service, Local Government departments, Hospitals, Private Companies, Schools and Colleges and Manufacturing firms. In all these very different fields, people with office skills are needed to provide back up to the main work of the business or service.
    Information Technology has greatly affected office and clerical work and most people employed in this area will be expected to use computers as part of their job. Over two thirds of the UK workforce are now using PCs - this is compared to just 40% ten years ago. This means that there are now many jobs connected with Information Communication Technology (ICT), in developing new technology and supporting it. 10% of all national job vacancies are now in ICT work. ICT work falls into 3 main areas - work with hardware, software and telecommunications.

    Graduate unemployment has risen for the first time since comprehensive records began in 1994, provoking criticism of the government's plan to raise tuition fees. The numbers continuing in further study or training also rose, according to the official figures published yesterday, as graduates found it harder to move into work or sought to improve their chances in the job market. Opponents of the government's plans to raise tuition fees seized on the figures.
