Aviation and Aerospace
Since the beginning of time, man has been intrigued by flight and the cosmos. Today that fascination has turned into an industry that annually generates more than $40 billion in exports and $30 billion in positive balance of trade for the U.S. In fact, aeronautics is one of the nation's strongest industries, employing almost one million Americans.
From the establishment of NASA's space center at Cape Canaveral in the mid 60's, Florida has been recognized as the center of the world's aviation and aerospace industry. Currently, the area boasts a variety of leaders in this industry including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman.
This year, the Florida High Tech Corridor Council added Aviation and Aerospace to its list of target sectors. To further enhance this focus, a representative from the Florida Aviation and Aerospace Alliance (FAAA) was added as a member of the Council.
Already, Florida companies account for more than $6 billion in contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and $4 billion awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. But, due to increasing competition for these jobs from regions both inside the U.S. and abroad, the Council and FAAA are working together to continue to attract, retain and grow aviation and aerospace companies to the region.
One of the greatest challenges that the area will face in the coming years is the need for additional engineers and technicians. To meet this need, the Council will continue to focus on supporting the University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida's schools of engineering.

A Summer Camp Like No Other Cleared For Takeoff International Aerospace Camp is eight days of aviation adventure! This "college seminar" is very similar to a real college experience-without the studying and exams! What makes this camp unique, however, is the amount of flight training each camper receives. We are very interested in students who truly want to get a "taste" of collegiate aviation. Your counselors, flight instructors and professors are leaders in aerospace education. You'll start with the basics of flying, experience new and exciting technology, and explore career opportunities in aerospace. You will be introduced to the complete spectrum of the industry. UND Aerospace The University That Flies The John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks is one of the most highly respected collegiate aviation programs in the nation and a leader in atmospheric research. Careers in aviation fields may be on the rebound
By Mike Lipsius
Special to SchoolFinder.com
Canadian students considering a career in aviation may be surprised to know that now's as good of a time as any to enrol. Though many airlines and aerospace companies have made headlines with job cuts and financial trouble since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a rebound is expected. Jeff Durand, director of flight operations at Coastal Pacific Aviation, a flight school working in conjunction with aviation programs at University College of Fraser Valley, says because of the "slingshot effect of post-9/11" there will be a big demand for workers in the aviation industry. "It's a knee-jerk reaction. People said, 'We've got to cut back on flights and aircraft.' Now with the economy picking up, in particular the US economy and GDP, there are more people flying and airlines don't have the personnel to supply these floats of added passengers," says Durand. "People who go into a course now will be prime picking in a few years, so it's a very good time to be a student." Human Resources Development Canada seems to back up Durand's claim. On the HRDC's JobFutures.ca Web site, they say work prospects for pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors are fair through 2007 and that there will likely be growth. The growth is attributed to a stronger airline industry and a return of the public's confidence in airlines as a mode of travel.
