design not interior architecture, I can attest the intense training covered a number of design courses. some of these courses included building codes and construction, lighting design, building systems, history of architecture, computer and hand drafting to name just a few.
All accredited four year programs in interior design should prepare each student to become professional designers. Some states require
interior designers have a license to practice. I wish every state did this, because one must have an education in design to obtain a license.
A majority of educated interior designers are not merely decorators,
concerned with fabrics and finishes but are well trained and equipped with the skills, insight and education to sculpt and manipulate any nonstructural space within a building's interior. I would suggest you and your daughter research the design program within each school she is interested in. There are various interior design concentrations some include, hospitality, commercial, institutional and residential. The only difference I have come accross is the architecture programs usually involve additional math/technical courses. A reputable design school goes far beyond teaching about just fabrics, furnishings and finishes. Good Luck!!

Posted by Sharon Mast on March 09, 2004 at 17:46:39: My daughter is applying to art schools, some of which offer a major in interior design and others which offer a major in interior architecture. What really distinguishes the two? Can someone trained in IA do ID but not vice versa? What are the career prospects in one field as opposed to the other? Any advice from student and/or professional interior designers and architects would be greatly appreciated.

Teens prepare for careers in architecture, fashion design
By Rachel La Corte

Associated Press Writer AP Photo/David Adame
Janelle Syren, 16, works on a drawing during a Design 2D class at the Design and Architecture Senior High School in Miami. DASH students can take classes such as architecture, fashion design, Web design and entertainment technology. Students at the Design and Architecture Senior High School, or DASH, can enroll in programs that include architecture, fashion design, Web design and entertainment technology. Students take eight classes a day instead of the six that regular high schools require; they graduate with 32 credits instead of the 24 required by the state. "It's a lot of work, but it's worth it," Gabriella Gonzalez, a 17-year-old senior in the fashion program, says. Gonzalez scans photos of her recent project, an outfit with a ruffled hat and tutulike skirt made entirely with brown paper grocery bags and glue. She hopes her creative sense of style will get her into Academy of Arts in San Francisco, Fashion Institute of Technology in New York or Parsons School of Design in New York. DASH has helped her to explore her talent, because it's "a more mature and understanding environment. I know that here, I'm never going to be looked down upon for being creative," says Gonzalez, who has pink strands running through her two blond braids. "No one is ever going to tell me that I can't present myself in a certain way."

    Interior Design
Interior Design involves the adaptation of natural and human-made environments to the cultural, social, physiological, psychological, economic, historic, and behavioral activities of people. This integrates the aesthetic and environmental preferences of individuals or groups within the interior spaces of a building. Designers of enclosed space employ theories derived from fine arts, architecture, and intuition to guide judgments and aesthetic decisions, while scientific theories and guidelines provide knowledge that guide analysis, prediction, and testing the interactions between people and space.

    Architecture Schools
Architecture Schools : A directory of information about top architecture schools and architecture colleges that can help you decide which architecture school is best for you. Architecture schools train you in the art and science of building design. In architecture school you will learn to start with a project's requirements, as well as the available resources, and then to implement a plan that meets the requirements. A key part of success is being able to discuss problems, issues, and options with the client and agree on solutions. This takes place on an ongoing basis through a project. An architect must be able to use architectural drawings, construction plans, and other documents to communicate with the client and the construction team. Architecture schools also train you to become familiar with building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations and other laws and regulations that affect your project. Most architects find work in small architectural firms. About 20% are self-employed. Most of their time is spent developing architecture drawings, communicating with clients, developing reports, or communicating with other architects and engineers. There were about 113,000 architecture jobs in 2002. Job competition is expected to be fierce, but those who have completed degrees at architecture schools, and have obtained job experience will land the best jobs. A recent survey showed that only 20% of art and design graduates were involved in work that is not at all relevant to art and design. Before a building can exist it must be built; before it can be built, it needs to be designed. That design starts with an idea in the mind of an architect. In basic terms, a building is a projection of ideas into the world of concrete (quite literally). Just as a writer identifies a central theme around which to build a story, devices a plot, creates characters and thus knits the story with well-chosen words, an architect ideates, sketches, makes blueprints of his designs and then sees them come to life as cottages, skyscrapers and even monuments.

    Careers in Architecture
A career in architecture combines the aesthetics of art with the practicality of science. Architectural design isn't just about needing a house or building constructed. Throughout the years architecture is a direct reflection of our society-the spaces we inhabit are direct examples of what we value as people. If your creative leanings are driving you toward this innovative field, read on to learn more about what a career in architecture is like.
As an architect, you'll be generating the layout and design of structures. You can choose to specialize in public buildings, such as high-rises and skyscrapers, office spaces, libraries, community centers, or malls. You can also specialize in home design and work for a building company to plan out suburban homes in subdivisions or complexes. Or start your own architectural development company for suburban housing. The design of multi-million dollar homes is one of the most creative ways to use your architectural skills and can be a profitable way to be a freelance architect and build a reputation. Most architects start out as junior architects, and can also work as apprentices to develop their portfolios and experience.
Architecture is a highly skilled field and to even be considered for employment you'll need to graduate from an architectural program. An advanced degree, along with accreditation may also be necessary as you advance in your career. Your degree program will provide a broad overview of architecture's function in society, building design and design methods, and construction methods. There is also growing focus on environmentally conscious design and the use of sustainable materials to preserve our natural resources. Additional career opportunities that architectural degrees are valuable to include real estate planning and development, and urban planning.
