Degree Program Overview
The Department of Plant, Soil, and Entomological Sciences, within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in entomology, plant science, and soil and land resources. The Department includes degree programs that focus on the earth's biological and physical resources allowing students to pursue careers in agriculture, horticulture, or environmental science. Students in agriculture and horticulture develop skills needed for professional careers in crop production, plant maintenance, pest control, biotechnology, and biological control of insects, weeds, and diseases. Students in soil and land resources are prepared for careers relevant to environmental quality and the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of soil and water resources. The entomology major emphasizes both basic and applied aspects of the study of insects and how they influence human activities. The program provides a broad entomological education with opportunities to specialize in such areas as agricultural and aquatic entomology, biological control, host plant resistance, insect ecology, physiology, and insect-plant relations. The curriculum is designed for students pursuing professional careers in the basic and applied fields of entomology, or for those interested in continuing their education at the graduate level.

Admissions Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture is one of seven specializations students may choose from within the Plant Sciences program. The study of horticulture at Cornell University is divided into two departments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Department of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture, and the Department of Fruit and Vegetable Sciences. Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture applies principles of plant science and business management to the production and marketing of greenhouses, nursery and turfgrass crops, and the selection and management of plants for both indoor and outdoor landscapes. Programs prepare students for careers at the professional and managerial levels in environmental and horticultural management, horticultural business, research, teaching, communication, and extension and public education. Students work with their faculty advisers to tailor a program to achieve individual educational objectives in floriculture and landscape horticulture. Students are also encouraged to take courses in agricultural economics and business management, agricultural engineering, agronomy (soils), computer science, ecology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, oral and written expression, and plant taxonomy. Use of electives to pursue study in the humanities and in other areas of special interest to the student is encouraged and provides opportunities for broadening and enriching learning experiences. Numerous opportunities to become familiar with the horticultural industries and professions are provided through field trips, guest lecturers, optional special topics, work experience, and internship programs.

Landscape Horticulture involves designing and managing open space in rural areas. The degree course includes both art and science and aims to give its graduates the creative and technical skills necessary to design quality environments. Students attend lectures and seminars, go on fieldtrips and undertake research and design projects. Design studio is central to their education. Through studio based projects students develop their understanding of the natural and manmade landscape. They prepare landscape design and management proposals that deal with a wide range of aesthetic social and ecological issues. Landscape architectural practitioners lecture on the course and assist in studio tutorials. The course includes a period of work placement which provides students with an opportunity to work within the landscape design profession. During this time students are encouraged to travel and to spend time working abroad or taking a short study course at a foreign university.

Admission to Plant and Animal Sciences Program
All degree programs in the Department of Plant and Animal Sciences are open enrollment.
The Discipline
Agronomy and Horticulture
Agronomy is the science of soil and crop management. Scientific and economic principles are applied to the conservation of soil resources, maintenance and improvement of the environment, and the production of food and fiber for a growing population.
Horticulture is the art and science of cultivating fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Scientific, economic, and artistic principles are applied to improving the aesthetic qualities of our environment as well as to producing food and fiber for consumption. Advances are being made in manipulation of genetic materials of living organisms. Molecular biology will play a key role in developing new crops and new uses and capabilities for old crops. This area of study combines biology and agriculture and horticulture in novel and exciting ways. Animal Science There are three emphases within the animal science degree: (1) agribusiness, (2) animal biotechnology, and (3) veterinary science.

Growing green money... What is horticulture? Horticulture is the section of agriculture that deals with the cultivation of herbs, vegetables, flowers, fruits, ornamental trees and also garden landscaping, maintenance of nurseries, green houses, orchards and plantations.Moving away from the days when backyard cultivation of plants and vegetables was more of a hobby, horticulture has now become an organised sector of agriculture.
Horticulture includes floriculture or cultivation of flowers, cultivation of fruits (Pomology) and cultivation of vegetables (Olericulture). Natural products that can be cultivated in a garden or orchard are covered under horticulture.
With changing lifestyles, people are becoming more health and diet conscious than ever before. This is leading to rapid growth of this field. The export market has also grown rapidly.
Till a few decades ago, this career was not very lucrative as most of the cultivation was done by farmers. This has changed over the past few years and many multinational firms have also entered the fray, cultivating fruits, vegetables and flowers at a large scale. The knowledge and skill of horticulturists is now in great demand. Nature of work Horticultural crops generally include fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers and plantations like tea, coffee. Exotic flowers such as roses, hibiscus, amaryllis, daffodils, dahlias, chrysanthemums, lily, sunflower, gladioli, orchids, various types of grasses and cacti which are used in gardens; fruits and vegetables, beverages like tea, coffee are some of the plants grown by horticulturists.
