Careers in Marketing The field of marketing involves numerous activities. As a consumer, you probably encounter these activities on a daily basis through television, the mail, and possibly the internet. Some responsibilities of individuals involved in marketing include: developing advertising campaigns, conducting research on customer needs, setting product prices and determining how products should be delivered and displayed. Below is a summary of some employment opportunities for marketing majors. Advertising
The majority of positions in advertising are found within agencies, large companies, and the media. Competition for entry-level positions is high, so obtaining experience in this area prior to graduation, through internships or summer employment, is strongly encouraged. Starting salaries are typically low, but increase with experience.
  • Agency: The entry-level position at an agency is in account management. The account manager works directly with clients determining their marketing and advertising needs and then acts as a liaison with the creative team at the agency to ensure that an effective advertising campaign is planned and implemented. This position involves constant deadlines and sometimes demanding clients.

Career Opportunities for Majors in Marketing
Introduction
As a field of study, marketing concerns itself with all the activities that occur between the production and the consumption of goods and services. Marketing students learn about product development, advertising, promotion, pricing, retailing, consumer decision making, legal aspects of marketing, global marketing, and marketing research. Employers of marketing majors include large business and industrial firms but also smaller companies, private research organizations, and advertising agencies. Retail and wholesale trade, insurance, travel, and real estate are other areas where your training can open up job opportunities. A bachelor's degree in marketing qualifies you for a broad range of positions, and a master's degree qualifies you for advanced positions with more responsibility. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities.

Careers in Marketing
Description of Marketing Jobs
Almost a third of all Americans are employed in marketing-related positions. Thus, the number of possible marketing careers is enormous. Because of the knowledge of products and consumers gained in these jobs, marketing provides excellent training for the highest levels in the organization. A recent study by a recruiting firm found that more top executives have come out of marketing than of any other area. Marketing salaries vary by company and position. Beginning salaries usually rank only slightly below those for engineering and chemistry, but equal or exceed those for economics, finance, accounting, general business, and the liberal arts. If you succeed in an entry-level marketing position, you will quickly be promoted to higher levels of responsibility and salary. For recent information on jobs and salaries see the Career Center at SFSU. Marketing has become an attractive career for some people who have not traditionally considered this field. One trend is the growing number of women entering marketing. Women have historically been employed in the retailing and advertising areas of marketing. But they now have moved into all types of sales and marketing positions. Women now pursue successful sales careers in pharmaceutical companies, publishing companies, banks, consumer products companies, and in an increasing number of industrial selling jobs. Their ranks are also growing in product and brand manager positions.

Public Relations and Advertising Agent

BSBA 0101 Section 2
April 5,2002
Public Relations and advertising is the art of attracting the consumer and getting them excited about a product. It is about marketing a perception of a product or service and getting the customer excited about it. These perceptions come from every instance the product is in the public eye; be it clothing, a drink, a firm or even marketing an individual. Those involved in the public relations and advertising career help market the most positive aspect of these products in an appealing way to the target audiences. I enjoy personable work which requires charismatic, innovative and open mind set. It is a challenge whose results are displayed and if done well, the effect impacts the populous. PR firms also help non-profit agencies and government agencies in how to best appeal to the public trough speeches, commercials, ads and other forms of media. They aregreat assets in creating an image and being seen in a positive light.
One of the earliest jobs in the PR cycle is that of the Assistant Advertising Manager. Most salaries depend on situation, location, and the firm the appointee is affiliated with. Usually these jobs are between $15,000 and $50,000 a year for Assistant Advertising Managers. These are the individuals who aid in creating products names and help in the creation process for the ad campaign. They place ads, purchase air time for commercials and set up other media functions and also lay a kind of game plan for how these things will be preceived by the general public and target audience. In general, businesses are hiring in-house departments instead of Public Relations firms. This trend looks as though it will continue. With these options, and with experience and positioning, salaries are usually over $50,000. Job availablitiy is fair around the nation. Advertising is a key catalyst in business and PRexperts are necessary to make sure a company's best foot is put forward.
