    Career Guide - Archaeologist
THE WORK Archaeology is the study of past societies and environment through the material remains left by them.  It provides us with information about many aspects of our development e.g. the beginning of agriculture, the discovery of metals and the origins of towns. Archaeologists excavate remains of buildings and settlements and study human remains, objects and environments. The following are the main areas in which archaeologists are involved:
    • Field Archaeology : This involves the discovery and recording of ancient sites and sometimes their excavation.  It is of importance both for research and for the protection of cultural heritage.  Field archaeologists may be employed by all the archaeological bodies and most archaeologists will possess the necessary skills, but some bodies (such as the Environment and Heritage Agency) concentrate on this activity. Museums : Archaeologists employed by Museums are primarily responsible for looking after ancient artifacts, and making them accessible for study.  But they are also expected to research, lecture and out on exhibitions.
