Should the death penalty be banned as a form of punishment?
In a Nutshell Yes No
  • Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment is several times that of keeping someone in prison for life.
  • It is barbaric and violates the "cruel and unusual" clause in the Bill of Rights.
  • The endless appeals and required additional procedures clog our court system.
  • We as a society have to move away from the "eye for an eye" revenge mentality if civilization is to advance.
  • It sends the wrong message: why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong.
  • Life in prison is a worse punishment and a more effective deterrent.
  • Other countries (especially in Europe) would have a more favorable image of America.
  • Some jury members are reluctant to convict if it means putting someone to death.
  • The prisoner's family must suffer from seeing their loved one put to death by the state.
  • The possibility exists that innocent men and women may be put to death.
  • Mentally ill patients may be put to death.
  • It is useless in that it doesn't bring the victim back to life.

    Historical Overview of
Capital Punishment in the United States
    • Introduction
    • Colonial America to the 1780s
    • 1789 to the Early 20th Century Introduction The sentence of death has been an accepted form of justice through the ages. Geography, culture, and the passing of time have varied its form, the offenses for which it has been imposed and its recipients. Today in the United States, capital punishment is an integral part of the criminal justice system. Capital punishment has also remained a perennial "hot button" issue; when the average person is asked if he or she supports the death penalty, that person is likely to give a definitive yes or no answer. Therefore, as the national debate continues, it is important to understand how capital punishment has evolved in the United States.
Colonial America to the 1780s James Kendall was the first English colonist executed in the New World in 1608 at the Jamestown settlement.

Feel free to click on our face to see some personal thoughts and feels toward capital punishment. Just for fun, EMail one of us with your opinion: FOR or AGAINST.
    Background/Intro
Each year there are about 250 people added to death row and 35 executed. The death penalty is the harshest form of punishment enforced in the United Sates today. Once a jury has convicted a criminal offense they go to the second part of the trial, the punishment phase. If the jury recommends the death penalty and the judge agrees then the criminal will face some form of execution, lethal injection is the most common form used today. There was a period from 1972 to 1976 that capital punishment was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Their reason for this decision was that the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment under the eighth amendment. The decision was reversed when new methods of execution were introduced.
Capital punishment is a difficult issue and there are as many different opinions as there are people. In our project, both sides have been presented and argued with focus on several topics as listed below. This page was constructed to show the different opinions held by the members of our group. There is plenty of useful information within our work. We hope you find it helpful and informative.

Common reasons in support of capital punishment
The Bible The Bible requires the death penalty for a wide variety of crimes, including sex before marriage, adultery, homosexual behavior, doing work on Saturday and murder. It even calls for some criminals (e.g. prostitutes who are the daughters of priests) to be tortured to death by being burned alive. Most Christians, with the exception of those in the Reconstructionist movement , feel that many of these grounds for the death penalty no longer apply to Christian societies. U.S. However, Bible passages are still used to promote the retention of capital punishment for murderers; some advocate that homosexuals also be executed. Justice/Vengeance Many people feel that killing convicted murderers will satisfy their need for justice and/or vengeance. They feel that certain crimes are so heinous that executing the criminal is the only reasonable response. Deterrence Many people feel that the death penalty will deter criminals from killing. This does not seem to be confirmed by an analysis of the available data. However, it feels intuitively correct for many people.

    Quotations:
" Where would Christianity be if Jesus got eight to fifteen years with time off for good behavior? " NY State Senator James Donovan, speaking in support of capital punishment. " He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first. " Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus Christ) interrupting a public execution of a woman for adultery. John 8:7, (NKJ) " Sometimes you just have the thin the herd. " Dennis Miller " Does it make sense for the state to hire murderers to kill defenseless victims on death row, in order to prove that hiring murderers to kill defenseless victims is morally wrong ? Anon. " There are plenty of innocent people being killed by those on parole...The only cure for this kind of "sickness" is death. I know I may sound hard and cruel- but I for one, have had enough! " Posting to a feedback forum, Detroit News, 1999-MAR-2 "

    Focus on the Death Penalty
Though the federal government and 38 of the 50 states have death penalty laws, and public opinion polls in the last decade have generally indicated that the majority of Americans favor capital punishment, organizations and sites advocating the abolition of the death penalty are more common and easily found on the World Wide Web than organizations and sites favoring retention of the death penalty . That more anti than pro-death penalty sites are listed on this page is due to that reality, and should not be construed to indicate the Justice Center's advocacy of either a pro or con position on the death penalty.
This page includes only secular organizations and sites. For religious organizations and sites on the death penalty, see The Debate: Religion

provides a number of resources which present both sides of the death penalty debate in the U.S. Views of law enforcement officers , as shown in a national poll of police executives and a resolution from a national police organization, are split on the death penalty. A selection of resources indicating positions on the death penalty from a religious perspective include links to biblical citations and statements of officials, organizations, and individual adherents of different religious traditions, including Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam. The debate on capital punishment embraces many more specific issues, such as cost, inequities in the justice system, etc.; resources giving arguments on specific points are included on the Specific Issues page.
