On one occasion, when I was dropped off at the airport, one of the usual baggage handlers said, "Hey, the next time you come I want you to bring me a shirt like that."
I happened to have a few of the FADP shirts in the back seat, so I opened the car door and distributed t-shirts to five baggage handlers and one traveler!

Should Christians support the death penalty? The answer to that question is controversial. Many Christians feel that the Bible has spoken to the issue, but others believe that the New Testament ethic of love replaces the Old Testament law.
Old Testament Examples
Throughout the Old Testament we find many cases in which God commands the use of capital punishment. We see this first with the acts of God Himself. God was involved, either directly or indirectly, in the taking of life as a punishment for the nation of Israel or for those who threatened or harmed Israel. One example is the flood of Noah in Genesis 6-8. God destroyed all human and animal life except that which was on the ark. Another example is Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18-19), where God destroyed the two cities because of the heinous sin of the inhabitants. In the time of Moses, God took the lives of the Egyptians' first-born sons (Exod. 11) and destroyed the Egyptian army in the Red Sea (Exod. 14). There were also punishments such as the punishment at Kadesh-Barnea (Num. 13-14) or the rebellion of Korah (Num. 16) against the Jews wandering in the wilderness. The Old Testament is replete with references and examples of God taking life. In a sense, God used capital punishment to deal with Israel's sins and the sins of the nations surrounding Israel.

The Ultimate Punishment
Introductory note
Following the execution of Timothy McVeigh last week for the murder of 168 people in the Oklahoma bomb blast, we look back at issues surrounding the use of the death penalty in this country. In England, Wales and Scotland, the death penalty was abolished virtually completely - and replaced by life imprisonment - by the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965, but the penalty remained in use in Northern Ireland until the Northern Ireland (Emergency Powers) Act 1973. The death penalty did remain for treason, including the murder of a member of the Royal Family, and for piracy until the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 abolished those provisions. Also in 1998, the Human Rights Act repealed the use of the death penalty for military offences and there are now no categories where the death penalty applies in peace-time. This is enshrined in the Sixth Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights signed by the United Kingdom in 1998.

Study: U.S. capital punishment system flawed
WASHINGTON (CNN) A new academic study warns that "serious, reversible errors" in cases involving capital punishment are crippling the U.S. legal system. The report, released Monday by a group of Columbia University law professors, updates a 2000 study that warned more than seven of every 10 death penalty cases between 1973 and 1995 were reversed because of errors made by judges, juries and prosecutors. The professors said their study is not designed to present a moral argument for or against capital punishment. They said they're concerned about the failure of the current system to perform the way it should. The latest study found a correlation between the number of cases eligible for the death penalty and the risk of legal mistakes. "It puts you at very high risk of having high error rates," said study author and Columbia law professor James Liebman. "It also puts you at high risk of sentencing people to death who will later turn out to be innocent."

The Death Penalty (A Christian Defense)
By Tom Flannery As Paul wrote, governments have the moral authority and obligation to execute capital criminals.
Protestant Channel-Christianity.com -
The death penalty has fallen on hard times recently thanks to a Columbia University study purporting a 68% error rate in capital cases and to the intense media scrutiny revolving around the presidential campaign of Texas Governor George W. Bush, whose state leads the nations in executions.
Still, error rates are only one argument used by opponents of capital punishment. They also claim that the death penalty is not a deterrent to murder, and they reject the notion that swiftly executing convicted murderers would reduce the nation's homicide rates. But this argument ignores an abundance of clear and compelling evidence to the contrary.
A recent piece by William Tucker in The New York Post traced the direct relationship between the use of capital punishment and low national homicide rates from the 1930s until the Supreme Court effectively abolished the death penalty in 1963, when murder rates almost immediately began to soar. The rates of executions and homicides have moved in tandem from 1963 to today. He concluded: "If murders and executions had followed the same pattern established before the effective abolition of the death penalty, more than half a million American lives could have been saved." No wonder Solomon wrote thousands of years ago under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: "Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil" (Eccles. 8:11).
