Woman thanks God as execution commuted
January 16, 1996
Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EST SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (CNN) Just 14 hours before Guinevere Swan Garcia was about to become the second woman in 20 years to be executed in the United States, her death sentence was commuted to life in prison with no chance of parole. Garcia, who earlier had fought to keep her execution date, said "thank God this has happened" when she heard Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar's decision. Garcia, 37, was scheduled to be put to death shortly after midnight Tuesday for shooting her husband during an argument. Over Garcia's objections, death penalty opponents Sister Miriam and Amnesty International's Bianca Jagger campaigned for her clemency. They argued that Garcia has had a long history of abuse that included alcoholism and sexual molestation, and that her execution would be inhumane in light of her harrowing past. But Garcia said she was prepared to accept her fate. She told the Illinois Prisoner Review Board that "this is not a suicide, I am responsible for these crimes." Gov. Edgar, who had never before overturned a death sentence, said Garcia's crime did not justify execution and that her husband's murder was not premeditated. "Horrible as was her crime, it is an offense comparable to those that judges and jurors have determined over and over again should not be punishable by death," Edgar said in a statement.

Inmate's decision stirs controversy
January 25, 1996
Web posted at: 1:10 a.m. EST From Correspondent Gary Tuchman SMYRNA, Delaware (CNN) Convicted double-murderer Billy Bailey was executed early Thursday in Delaware. Bailey drew a lot of attention because of the method he chose: death by hanging. Only a few hundred people live in the tiny town of Cheswold, Delaware. Two of them used to live in a modest home where they grew corn and soybeans, and, more importantly, raised children and grandchildren. Clara and Gilbert Lambertson were 73 and 80 years old, respectively, when a man named Billy Bailey came into their lives and then ended their lives. "This was a heinous crime against innocent people. They were elderly, in their own home. They did not know Billy Bailey. He simply intruded and took their lives in a vicious manner," said Delaware Deputy Attorney General Paul Wallace. Bailey, 49, was convicted of shooting the Lambertsons to death 17 years ago. Bailey's was the third hanging execution in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1976.

Church appeals court rules Presbyterian minister did not breach church law by performing gay marriage

Bernard Hibbitts
on 5/3/2004 04:21:07 PM
A Presbyterian church appeals court has by a 6-4 margin narrowly overturned a lower church court ruling that had found Rev. Stephen Van Kuiken in violation of church law for marrying same-sex couples in Cincinnati. The Presbyterian Church (USA) has affirmed its definition of marriage as a "man-woman covenant", but the majority of the members of the Permanent Judicial Commission of the Synod of the Covenant of the Presbyterian Church found that the church's directive to congregations and celebrants "avoids an outright prohibition by using the words 'should' and 'should not' in guidance for church bodies and ministers." Read the Commiission's ruling . Kuiken was dismissed by his Presbytery in June 2003; his dismissal was later overturned , but he has since joined another denomination. AP has

The crowd in John 8 wanted to apply the death penalty. The woman was guilty of a crime which deserved death under to the law. They came to Jesus to see if he would uphold the law in this matter. He said "let the one of you without sin cast the first stone". They all went away. It seems very clear to me that this story illustrates the incompatibility of the death penalty and following Jesus. If he had supported the death penalty under the law, he would have just stood aside and let them get on with it. The way the Bible presents the incident, it was an open and shut case.
When we kill or diminish a fellow human being, we both diminish ourselves and insult God.
Under what law? Jesus had been convicted in a Jewish court (sanhedrin) of blasphemy. He had been convicted by the governor of the province of sedition. You may argue (as I would) that both of these convictions were unsound, and possibly would have been overturned on appeal, but from the information in the Gospels it seems that both the Sanhedrin and the Roman governor exercised their lawful authority in sentencing Jesus to death.
When I get back to my office tomorrow I will suggest some sources where you can find an analysis of both the true nature of Judaism in the time of Jesus, and the easily documented Christian distortion of Judaism in the past 2000 years.

TIP: Right -click on an MP3 to download it, and then choose "Save Target As..." instead of "Open." Save it to your hard drive and you will only have to download once . Then burn a CD and share mp3s with your friends, or email the mp3s to them. Conserve our bandwidth!
  • Observe the tips on downloading MP3 files on the following pages. Don't download the same file multiple times. Don't waste your time and our bandwidth. A broadband connection is recommended for downloading these files. Modem users usually fail to complete the download of any of these files. If you're looking for a good broadband ISP, try your local cable company. Why I recommend cable over DSL.
Once you have downloaded the MP3s you want, share them with your friends. Send it to them by email or burn a CD. Not only does that conserve our bandwidth, that also provides you with a backup source. You can't count on these files always being available here.
If any mp3s are missing, or if you have mp3s of a similar nature to offer the world, notify Ron, the librarian. There may well be filenames incorrectly spelled; this can be easily corrected if it is brought to Ron's attention.

Hanson , Indiana University, Bloomington Pious Princes and Red-Hot Lovers: The Politics of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Jerry Weinberger , Michigan State University Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is obviously a tragedy of impetuous young love. But it is also a play about politics, especially politics as conditioned by Christian morality and religion. The play's action is determined by the conflict between secular and priestly authority, and by the complex interaction among mercy, love, and punishment as practiced by Escalus, Prince of Verona, and Friar Laurence, the Franciscan. In the course of this action, the Veronese regime is transformed, and the common good determined, in ways more compatible with the friar's interests than with those of the Prince. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's pictures of the unique problems that determined modern, as opposed to ancient, political life.

The price of executions EARLIER THIS MONTH a blue-ribbon commission assembled by Illinois governor George Ryan presented a scathing review of that state's capital punishment process: innocent people are being condemned (13 of them at present count have been exonerated); defense lawyers are failing their clients; prosecutors are behaving unscrupulously; race is a huge factor; and more than half of the cases are reversed on appeal. If all that wasn't enough, the panel also pointed out another problem – one that's garnered little media attention anywhere in the country. Some commissioners, concerned about the massive financial costs of imposing each death sentence, "questioned whether the dedication of so many resources to a relatively small number of cases was prudent."

Engelsk - Essay Forfatter: Trond Erik Øverland Death penalty has ever since agent times been important as punishment for criminals. In that period of time they had a saying: «You are not being punished for stealing sheep, but because of the fact that sheep are not to be stolen». Death penalty was used to prevent criminal actions. Is this barbaric and unethical, or isn’t it? Is it morally correct if all members of society accepts it? What effect does capital punishment have on society? I won’t be the judge of how «right» or «wrong» death penalty is, morally speaking. I’d rather discuss the more practical consequences of it.

Jon Langford (Photo By Jim Newberry) Country music has always paid special attention to murder ballads and songs of public executioner and vigilante justice. Pick up an old Johnny Cash record and you’re bound to find at least a couple of songs on the subject. Alt.country hero Jon Langford is carrying on the tradition of singing about the unsavory realm of violence and vengeance and this time he’s doing it with a twist. The Chicago-based, Welsh-born singer is putting together a collection of murder tunes and related songs to protest capital punishment. The project is being headed by The Pine Valley Cosmonauts , one of Langford’s many bands (the prolific musician also heads The Waco Brothers and The Mekons ). The Cosmonauts’ schtick is that they round up a variety of guest vocalists to create theme albums — in the past they’ve done collections of songs by Texas swing legend Bob Wills and have also been known to pay tribute to Johnny Cash. Their new album will be called The Executioner’s Last Songs and will be comprised wholly of old murder ballads and death row dirges. The album will be released by Bloodshot Records on March 19.
