Its greatest length from N to S is 8,000 km/5,000 mi and its breadth from Cape Verde to Ras Hafun is 7,440 km/4,623 mi. Its area, including Madagascar and the other adjacent islands, is 30,097,000 sq km/11,620,451 sq mi, or three times that of Europe. The coastline is regular, with no deep seas, bays, or river estuaries of any size to afford climatic or commercial advantages; so that in proportion to its size Africa has less coastline than any other continent, its total length being about 25,600 km/15,900 mi. Mountains: The mountains of Africa may be divided into three distinct systems: (1) the Atlas; (2) the west coast; and (3) the east coast. The Atlas Mountains occupy the northern portion between the sea and the Sahara, from Wadi Daa to Cape Bon. The eastern Atlas , 1,830-2,440 m/6,000-8,000 ft high, consist of two parallel ranges enclosing a plateau where salt lakes called chotts are found. The western Atlas , known as the Great Atlas of Morocco, have an average elevation of 3,050 m/10,000 ft, and the highest peaks are over 4,275 m/14,025 ft.

HISTORY The rivers of Guinea and the islands of Cape Verde were among the first areas in Africa explored by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Portugal claimed Portuguese Guinea in 1446, but few trading posts were established before 1600. In 1630, a "captaincy-general" of Portuguese Guinea was established to administer the territory. With the cooperation of some local tribes, the Portuguese entered the slave trade and exported large numbers of Africans to the Western Hemisphere via the Cape Verde Islands. Cacheu became one of the major slave centers, and a small fort still stands in the town. The slave trade declined in the 19th century, and Bissau, originally founded as a military and slave-trading center in 1765, grew to become the major commercial center. Portuguese conquest and consolidation of the interior did not begin until the latter half of the 19th century. Portugal lost part of Guinea to French West Africa, including the center of earlier Portuguese commercial interest, the Casamance River region. A dispute with Great Britain over the island of Bolama was settled in Portugal's favor with the involvement of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.

While they may not have specific responsibility for terrorist acts, they show complicity by their intentional ignorance. The Bush people know how to play terrorism to their own political advantage; this book shows how it is done.

Introduction
In addition to its specific activities in Mali and the Casamance region of Senegal, the regional delegation continued its cooperation with the National Societies of the region, conducting dissemination sessions for various target groups, encouraging instruction in humanitarian law, and on a practical level, helping to fight epidemics of cholera, promote public health and give first-aid training to local volunteers.
Cape Verde
Following an ICRC mission to Cape Verde, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deposited the instruments of accession to Additional Protocols I and II with the Swiss government on 16 March 1995. The government of Cape Verde also made a declaration recognizing the competence of the International Fact-Finding Commission.
Gambia A new attempted counter-coup on 27January resulted in the imprisonment of a number of people accused of being involved, including the Vice-President and the Minister of the Interior. The ICRC visited 24 individuals arrested in this connection and a further 80 security detainees held at Mile 2 prison and in hospitals and barracks for reasons related to events in 1994. Guinea Bissau The regional delegate went on mission to Guinea-Bissau in mid-September in order to establish contact with the government and the National Society, particularly with the aim of reactivating the latter and enhancing its management structure.
