Canoeing and Kayaking Canoes and kayaks bring to mind serene images of gliding down a calm river or across a cool lake. However, canoe and kayak contests can be fiercely competitive. Racers speed past the finish line only fractions of seconds apart. For both canoe and kayak contests, there are two types of competitions: "sprints" in (calm) flatwater and "slaloms" in (more turbulent) whitewater. There are more differences between the sports of canoeing and kayaking than one might imagine. Kayaks are closed, except for the small cockpit where the paddler sits. Flatwater canoes are open. In whitewater races, kayaks are equipped with water-tight sprayskirts. Kayakers use double-bladed paddles while canoeists use one with a single-blade, paddling alternately from side to side. Canoeists kneel as they paddle, while kayakers sit in their boats with their legs extended forward.

Ananova: Olympic sport guides - Canoe and Kayak A guide to the Olympic sport of Canoeing/Kayaking Technical details There are two types of canoes used at the Games - Canadian canoes and kayaks. Canadian canoes are open-decked for flatwater racing and closed for slalom and paddled by competitors in a kneeling position with a single-bladed paddle. Kayaks have closed decks, pointed bow and stern and are propelled by competitors in a sitting position with a long, double bladed paddle. Kayaks also have a rudder for flatwater races. The flatwater, or sprint courses are marked out in lanes of 9m and the water must be still and at least 2m deep. Automatic start and photo-finish equipment are used at Olympic Games. The object is to be first across the finish line. Umpires are at the start and the finish as well as a seven-person jury on hand to handle any disputes but the photo-finish camera is the final arbiter. Slalom canoeists need good timing and control to keep the boat on the fastest line through the 25 gates (at least six must be upstream) of the 300-500m course of turbulent water. If competitors touch the gates they incur five penalty points. Fifty penalty points are given if competitors fail to go through a gate. The winner has the best combination of fastest time and lowest or no penalty points.

91. About The Team
In the US, the first club was the New York canoe Club founded in 1871. Flatwater Sprint Paddling in canoe and kayak is an olympic sport.
http://www.scn.org/rec/sckc/misc_pages/aboutteam.html
About the Sport It is very fitting that canoe/kayak racing exists today in the northwest, as this is where the original canoes and kayaks were made. The northwest native American indians buillt the first canoes (non-dug-out type) while their Alaskan counterparts built kayaks. The first racing club was founded in England in 1866, and held its first regattta the following year. The boats were modeled on the northwest Native American and Inuit boats from what is now Alaska. In the US, the first club was the New York Canoe Club founded in 1871. Flatwater Sprint Paddling in canoe and kayak is an Olympic sport. In 1924, the sport debuted in the Olympic games in Paris as an exhibition put on by the Washington Canoe Club (founded in 1904 on the Potomac) and five teams from other countries. Canoe/Kayak became a medal event in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Canoe/Kayak racing has been part of the Olympics ever since with events in men's and women's kayak and men's canoe. About the Sprint Team Our program offers a lot of fun, hard work and pay-offs. Year-round membership on the team is a big commitment, but in return it offers physical and mental training, skills and confidence building, socialization, coaching, competition and the opportunity for both team and personal success.

History
The canoe is one of the oldest forms of transportation, probably second only to the raft. Dugout canoes were being manufactured at least 8,000 years ago. But lighter, more maneuverable canoes were developed much more recently in North America by covering a frame with animal skins, fabric, or bark. The birchbark canoe used by Native Americans was adopted by French explorers and fur traders during the 17th century. Despite its frail appearance, it's a very strong, durable craft. Its shallow draft will carry through white-water rapids that would demolish most boats, and it can be easily portaged around totally impassable rapids or across stretches of land from one body of water to another. The Eskimo kayak, which has a partly enclosed deck with openings for the paddlers' seats, was discovered by Europeans somewhat later. While the canoeist uses a single-bladed paddle that's similar to the oar used in rowing, the kayak paddle has a blade on each end and is gripped in the middle. A Scottish lawyer, John MacGregor, was chiefly responsible for establishing canoeing as a recreational sport. In 1845, he designed a type of canoe, the Rob Roy, which had a deck and was equipped with a mast and sail as well as paddles. MacGregor went on a whole series of cruises in Europe and the Holy Land beginning in 1849, and he wrote books and delivered many lectures about his trips.

Andreas Kiligaridis wrote the first page of the Greek canoeing history. Kiligaridis took the 13th place in the 500 meters of the single-seated canoe at the 2000 Olympics in Sidney. Kiligaridis is still the only competent oarsman and Greece hopes he gets a distinction at the 2004 Olympics. After Sidney Olympics he works very hard aiming at the first six places in the final and finally
at a medal. Canoeing was born thousands of years ago in the lakes and rivers of Canada as a mean of transport for the indigenes. Canoeing events are included in the Olympic program

    Background of the Sport
These are the human-powered versions of water sports. Kayaking is popular on both whitewater and lakes, and in coastal areas, sea kayaking is popular. Canoeing is popular on lakes, rivers, even on whitewater. Whitewater slalom kayaking and canoeing have been Olympic sports for four games: 1972, 1992, 1996, and 2000). Rafting is usually reserved for fast-flowing rivers and whitewater experiences, where the raft provides an extra measure of safety and control, expecially for beginning watersport enthusiasts.
With a kayak, uou move using a double-bladed paddle. You reach forward with each blade and pull, twist your torso to reach and pull with the opposite blade, to balance the forces and keep your kayak moving forward. Kayaking is an excellent sport for building leg, abdominal, chest and back muscles. Rookies need to learn to moves: the "eskimo roll" to right the craft when you are inverted and submerged, and a "wet exit" to get out of the skirt while inverted.

Olympic Canoeing Canoeing as a men's sport was first admitted to the Olympics at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. The next occurrence of the sport at an Olympic Games was not until 1948. The first Women's kayaking event was at the 1948 Olympic Games. Sprint Events Both canoes and kayaks are raced at the Olympic Games. The type of craft and the number of people in the craft are expressed in the name eg K1 is a single kayak event, K2 a doubles kayak event and C1 and C2 are single and doubles canoe events respectively. Men compete at 500m and 1000m in all the above four types as well as in the K4 over 1000m. Women compete at 500m in the three kayak types K1, K2, K4. In a kayak event racers sit with legs forward and use a double bladed paddle. In the canoe events the crew kneels and uses a single bladed paddle. The race is contested on flat water and boats must keep to their own lanes, staying at least 5m from the closest boat. A system of heats, repecharges and finals is used to determine which competitors reach the finals. The repecharge or "second chance" is used for competitors who lose the first heat.
