Sponsors General Information about Childhood Cancer In the U.S. there are 8,400 new cases of cancer each year in children between the ages of newborn and fourteen. Of these, there are 1,400 deaths. One third of those deaths are from Leukemia. The two major causes of cancer in children are leukemia and brain cancer. One statistic that is amazing is that there is a significant number of young adults, under the age of nineteen who get uterine or ovarian cancer, and also who get prostate or testicular cancer. Some cancer treatments last over three years. Often surgical procedures and extensive rehabilitation are necessary. Often the parents need to put their careers and jobs on hold in order to give the support necessary to their children who are undergoing treatment. In most cases, teenagers who are going through chemotherapy cannot work during the summers to save money for college.

What is Liver Cancer?
There are two main kinds of liver cancer. Heptoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Heptoma is cancer of the hepatocytes. (The main functioning liver cell). Hepatoma is primary liver cancer. Hepatoma usually grows in the liver as a ball-like tumor, invading the normal tissue surrounding it. A history of infection with the hepatitis B virus puts individuals at risk of developing heptoma. Cancer of the bile duct cells is called cholangiocarcinoma . Cholangiocarcinoma originates in the bile ducts and is often caused by infestation with the liver fluke Clonorchis (a parasite). The cancer grows along the bile ducts in sheets or lines, and is hard to find on X-ray studies.
Most cases of liver cancer are actually cancers that startted in another organ. This is called metastases . Because of its very high blood flow and many biological functions, the liver is one of the most common places for metastases to grow. Tumors that originally arise in the colon, pancreas, stomach, lung or breast can spread to the liver.

BREAST CANCER Breast cancer is life-threatening because it spreads to vital organs. One cancer cell multiplies, forming a malignant tumor. These cancer cells then break into blood vessels and enter the lymph system, a network of vessels that carry fluids through the body. Cancer cells then spread through the body and secondary tumors form, most commonly in the lungs, bones and liver. The process of spreading from a primary tumor to secondary tumors is called metastasis. This QuickTime Movie file shows you how cancer spreads in the breast area. The file is 526KB and it is courtesy of Health Philadelphia.

    Cancer
    Index to this page
    What is it?
A cancer is an uncontrolled proliferation of cells.
    • In some the rate is fast; in others, slow; but in all cancers the cells never stop dividing.
    • This distinguishes cancers - malign tumors or malignancies - from benign growths like moles where their cells eventually stop dividing.
    • Cancers are clones . No matter how many trillions of cells are present in the cancer, they are all descended from a single ancestral cell.
    • Cancers begin as a primary tumor . At some point, however, cells break away from the primary tumor and - traveling in blood and lymph - establish metastases in other locations of the body. Metastasis is what usually kills the patient.
    • Cancer cells are usually less differentiated than the cells of the tissue where they arose. Many people feel that this reflects a process of dedifferentiation , but I doubt it. Rather, cancers arise in precursor cells of the tissue; cells that are normally in a period of rapid mitosis and not yet fully differentiated.
See Cancer Cells in Culture for other properties of cancer cells.
