Cancer in Pets
Sarah E. Sheafor
, DVM, ACVIM (Oncology) As our pets are living longer and healthier lives, we are seeing more and more develop heart disease and cancer - just like people. Dogs, cats and exotic animals all get many different types of cancer. Some kinds of cancer are curable, some are treatable, and for some we can only provide comfort care. Whether a treatment or therapy is appropriate for your pet with cancer depends on:
1) the type of cancer (based on biopsy or cytology)
2) the grade or stage of the cancer (how aggressive or fast-moving it is)
3) the location In order to be able to give you and your pet the best option, a definitive diagnosis and a staging workup must be performed. These procedures involve getting a biopsy or aspirate of the tumor, and examining for spread (metastatic sites) for that particular form of cancer. We can use palpation, ultrasound , radiographic studies and needle aspirates to look at the lymph nodes, lungs, spleen, liver and other metastatic sites. We will also need to know how the rest of your pet's body is working - are there problems with the kidneys or liver, is there diabetes or heart disease? These other diseases may be more serious than the cancer, or may change what forms of therapy are appropriate.

Tissue oxygenation (ozone therapies, oxygen drops, hyperbaric, yoga reathing) (See Ozonated Steam Info)
Immune system enhancement

The following are a few "alternative" ways some have used to support their own self-healing process: 1. Vegetable juicing for fresh enzymes and its alkalizing effect. Cancer tissue is acidic and loves acid condition. Get a book on foods that alkalize the body. Generally speaking, fruits and vegetables tend to do that. Calcium, especially coral calcium may be helpful. 2. Hyperthermia (inducing an artificial fever for one to two hours via hot bath, steam, etc.) is known to boost the immune system. Cancer tissue is dense and cannot disperse heat very well and will die off. 3. Essiac tea

78. Facts - Flow Cytometry - Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center
Good general description of the technique from the Duke Univ. Comprehensive cancer Center.
http://cancer.duke.edu/FLOW/facts.asp
Facts About Flow Cytometry Flow cytometry is a powerful technique tailor-made for making measurements on single cells. Thus it is tailor made for examining cells like mammalian blood cells, protozoans, or bacteria that naturally grow nonadherently and are already in a single cell suspension. Solid tissues and adherent cells that grow in culture can also be measured after first disaggregating the individual cells by mechanical or chemical means. Size, shape, granularity, protein content, DNA content, intracellular pH and calcium concentration are the most common cellular parameters that can be measured by the flow cytometer. The cells may be examined live or fixed. The term flow cytometer is often used synonymously with fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS). The two cytometers that we have are the FACScan and the FACStarPLUS . Cells are stained with a variety of different dyes (fluorochromes) that bind to proteins or nucleic acids, or with dyes whose fluorescence emission spectrum usually changes with changes in calcium ion or hydrogen ion concentration. In order to identify specific proteins, fluorescent dyes like fluorescein (green emission) or phycoerythrin (orange emission) are covalently attached to monoclonal antibodies that will only bind to those cells that are expressing the protein to which the antibodies were raised. DNA dyes like propidium iodide allow the researcher to identify which cells are diploid (G0, resting, non-dividing cells, or any cycling cells in G1), which cells are in S phase of the cell cycle during which DNA is replicated, and which cells are G2 or in mitosis. Tumor cells are often aneuploid-that is, they have too many or too few chromosomes compared to the normal diploid DNA number for the species.
