Cancer
Cancer is a disease of cells. It is an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread). Cancer is also called malignancy. A cancerous growth or tumor is sometimes referred to as a malignant growth or tumor. A non-malignant growth or tumor is referred to as benign. Benign tumors are not cancer. Cancer is not one disease. It is a group of more than 100 different and distinctive diseases. Cancer is NOT contagious. Cancer can involve any tissue of the body and have many different forms in each body area. Most cancers are named for the type of cell or organ in which they start. If a cancer spreads (metastasizes), the new tumor bears the same name as the original (primary) tumor. The frequency of a particular cancer may depend on gender. While skin cancer is the most common type of malignancy for both men and women, the second most common type in men is prostate cancer and in women

The McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research (also the Department of Oncology of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School ) was founded by Dr. Harold P. Rusch in 1940 and was the first basic science cancer center in an academic institution in the United States. The central mission of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research is twofold:
  • To pursue outstanding research programs directed toward understanding the causes and biology of cancer and the factors that regulate normal and neoplastic growth and differentiation. To provide training of the highest quality in basic cancer research at the graduate and postdoctoral levels.
  • While these two goals represent the cornerstone of our activities, we also seek to provide medical students with a foundation in basic cancer biology and to serve the public and scientific community through our activities for national and international organizations. During the past 50 years, more than 800 women and men have received pre- or post-doctoral training at McArdle. Many of these alumni now hold faculty positions at universities throughout the United States and abroad, and most of the others are doing research at research institutes or in government or industry laboratories. The current staff of the McArdle Laboratory numbers approximately 200. The 24 faculty and emeritus faculty lead 21 research groups that include 68

Mass General broadcasts innovative surgical treatment for prostate cancer
Webcast is first in a series of online broadcasts aimed to educate physicians about novel surgical treatments and techniques BOSTON - Surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital, the largest teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, demonstrate to an Internet audience a minimally invasive procedure to remove the prostate gland in a webcast first aired on June 17 at 4:00 P.M. EDT The procedure, known as a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, is performed on patients with prostate cancer. The procedure is done through several small incisions in the abdomen, rather than a large, open one. Specially designed surgical instruments and cameras afford the surgeon precise control and excellent visibility for performing the operation.
"Traditional surgical removal of the prostate can mean long recovery times for patients," said Douglas Dahl, MD, FACS, the urologic surgeon who will be performing the procedure for the broadcast, "but with the laparoscopic procedure, patients usually can return to regular activities more quickly and much more comfortably."
While Dahl performs the surgery, his colleague, Shahin Tabatabaei, MD, also an MGH surgeon, will describe the procedure and answer email questions from viewers.

Drugs that are effective in treating cancer interfere with the activity of cancer cells, either by directly sabotaging a specific phase of cell development or by sending confusing messages to the cells. These mixed messages then cause the cancer cells to do the wrong thing and stop growing or ultimately destroy themselves.
    • Alkylating Agents interfere with cell division and affect the cancer cells in all phases of their life cycle. They confuse the DNA by directly reacting with it. Antimetabolites interfere with the cell's ability for normal metabolism. They either give the cells wrong information or block the formation of "building block" chemical reactions one phase of the cell's life cycle.
