If your child has cancer, the following general information will help you care for him / her.
Dental care
Check with your child's hematologist / oncologist before you take your child to the dentist.
Medications
  • Only give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol®). Do not give your child aspirin, any medicine that contains aspirin (Contac®), ibuprofen or any medicine that contains ibuprofen (Advil®).
  • Do not continue your child's immunization program (baby shots) until your child's hematologist says you may. Your child should not be in a household with a child who has received a live vaccine (oral polio or MMR, measles-mumps-rubella) in the last 30 days. Siblings can receive a "killed form" of the polio vaccine, which is a shot that is safer for the child getting chemotherapy.
Safety tips
  • When your child's blood count (ANC) is low, avoid crowds or people who have active infections. Your child's doctor will let you know when you need to take extra precautions to protect your child from infection.

General Ovarian Cancer Statistics
Ovarian cancer is a serious and under-recognized threat to women's health.
  • Ovarian cancer, the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women.
  • Ovarian cancer occurs in 1 out of 57 women.
  • It is expected that 25,580 women will be diagnosed with the disease in 2004.
  • An estimated 16,090 women in the United States will die from ovarian cancer in 2004.
  • Currently, 50 percent of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from it within five years; among African-American women only 48 percent survive five years or more.
Ovarian cancer is very treatable when it is detected early, but the vast majority of cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries.
  • In cases where ovarian cancer is detected before it has spread beyond the ovaries, more than 90 percent of women will survive longer than five years.
  • Only 25 percent of ovarian cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in the early stages.

Colon Cancer: general questions
Question
Hello,
I would greatly appreciate knowing the symptoms and who is at greatest risk of this disease. I am a 26 year old Canadian female of Celtic and Swedish origin. I suspect that I likely have what might possibly be a related condition, although I am not certain. (I have been informed that my condition may simply be hemmoroids). The symptoms include occasional blood in the stools and/or rectal bleeding with regular movements, on occasion, as well as rectal discomfort from time to time. I have noticed that the symptoms are worsened by stress and overwork, which is common and often extreme in my life. I eat a very healthy vegetarian diet, exercise regularly, drink copious amounts of water and juice, I do not smoke and almost never consume alcohol. I am, as far as I know, in good health otherwise, apart from a suseptibility to bronchitis, and I experienced a detached retina in my right eye two years ago. I am about 5 pounds overweight; the reason for which, I do not understand (thyroid, etc. has been tested).

Skip to content Home About us Products ... Breast cancer General information Breast cancer general information What does it all mean? Every year, thousands of women are told that they have breast cancer. It affects women of all ages, races and social classes. It is very common; about one in twelve women over the course of their lifetime will have the disease. Being told you have breast cancer is very frightening. It is a condition which is very difficult to understand and has a bewildering number of different treatments. This booklet has been written especially for you and your family. It provides some information about the disease and its treatment. We hope it will help you and your family to understand the disease and the types of treatment available.
What is breast cancer?
The breasts are made up of many glands which are lined by tiny building blocks called cells, which can produce milk. For a reason that is not yet properly understood, sometimes one of these cells gets out of control and it can then produce a lump or tumour. In some women it can take a very long time for the tumour to appear - usually three or four years, sometimes even longer than that. Tumours can be either benign or malignant. Benign (or innocent) tumours remain growing in one area and cannot spread. Malignant tumours are made of cancer cells which can spread to other parts of the body through the blood stream or the lymphatic system (this is explained later). There they can form new tumours called a recurrence, secondaries or metastases.

    What Causes Skin Cancer?
    Sunburn and Sunlight
Very simply, sunburn and UV light can damage your skin, and this damage can lead to skin cancer. There are of course other determining factors, including your heredity and the environment you live in. However, both the total amount of sun received over the years, and overexposure resulting in sunburn can cause skin cancer. Most people receive 80% of their lifetime exposure to the sun by 18 years of age. The message to parents from this is to

NCI Highlights Post-Surgery Chemo and Early Lung Cancer Head and Neck Cancer: Cetuximab Boosts Survival President's Panel Report: Living Beyond Cancer Annual Report to the Nation ... Past Highlights Description What is cancer of the lip and oral cavity? What is cancer of the lip and oral cavity? Cancer of the lip and oral cavity is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the lip or mouth. The oral cavity includes the front two thirds of the tongue, the upper and lower gums (the gingiva), the lining of the inside of the cheeks and lips (the buccal mucosa), the bottom (floor) of the mouth under the tongue, the bony top of the mouth (the hard palate), and the small area behind the wisdom teeth (the retromolar trigone). Cancers of the head and neck are most often found in people who are over the age of 45. Cancer of the lip is more common in men than in women, and is more likely to develop in people with light-colored skin who have been in the sun a lot. Cancer of the oral cavity is more common in people who chew tobacco or smoke pipes. A doctor should be seen if a person finds a lump in the lip, mouth, or gums, finds a sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal, or has bleeding or pain in the mouth. Another sign of a cancer of the mouth or gums is when dentures no longer fit well. Often lip and oral cavity cancers are found by dentists when examining the teeth.
