What is cancer?
Cancer occurs when cells in the body become abnormal and grow out of control.
What are genes?
Our bodies are always making new cells: so we can grow, to replace worn-out cells, or to heal damaged cells after an injury. This process is controlled by certain genes. Each person has a set of many thousands of genes passed on (inherited) from both parents. Genes are found in every cell of our body. All cancers are caused by changes to these genes.
How can changes in genes occur?
Changes to our genes usually happen during our lifetime, although a small number of people inherit such a change from a parent.
How can changed genes cause cancer?
Normally, cells grow and multiply in an orderly way. However, changed genes can cause cells to behave abnormally. They may grow into a lump. These lumps can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
If I have inherited a changed gene, will I get cancer?

The discovery by scientists at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, may eventually help in finding ways to prevent or treat the disease. The study, which was funded in part by the American Cancer Society (ACS), suggests a protein known as Fas ligand is essential in the cell suicide response to DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV). The study was published in the August 6, 1999, issue of Science Previous research has shown skin cancer develops as a result of DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV) in sunlight. If damage is not too extensive, it can be fixed by the cell's DNA repair enzymes. When damage cannot be repaired, another set of enzymes force the cell into programmed death, or apoptosis. This process of cell suicide prevents the damaged cell from developing into cancer.

January 14, 2004 SIU Med School's Cancer and Genetics Program Offers Screenings, Talks by Experts A public education event about cancer and genetics will feature cancer screenings and assessments as well as talks by four SIU cancer specialists and a national patient rights expert. It is being presented in February by the Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The program, Cancer and Genetics: Knowledge that May Protect Your Family, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 5, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield. It coincides with SIU's fourth annual cancer symposium for health professionals February 5-6 at the Crowne. The program begins with an opportunity for visiting a series of information booths and participating in various risk assessments and screenings. The American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Springfield Department of Public Health and Illinois Department of Public Health also are participating. Co-sponsors of the program are Memorial Medical Center and St. John's Hospital. At 6 p.m., short presentations will be given by SIU faculty physicians. The topics and presenters are - cancer overview by Dr. K. Thomas Robbins, interim director of the SIU Cancer Institute and professor and chair of the otolaryngology head and neck surgery division; breast cancer by Dr. Gary L. Dunnington, professor and chair of surgery; colorectal cancer by Dr. Jan Rakinic, associate professor of surgery, and prostate cancer by Dr. Thomas H. Tarter, Ph.D., associate professor of urology.

Cancer and genetics: myths and realities
11 December 2003
  • CancerBACUP releases first nationally-available guide revealing truth about genetic testing and inherited cancer risk CancerBACUP calls for better public information about cancer and genetics All those at high risk should have access to evidence-based screening programmes and clinical trials
The first nationally-available guide to cancer and genetics has been launched by cancer information charity CancerBACUP. The guide replaces popular myths surrounding cancer and genes with reliable facts. It is aimed at anyone who is worried they may have inherited an increased risk of cancer. The charity is calling for all those who think they may be at genetic risk of cancer to be given clear information to help them understand their risk. It is also calling for all those at high risk to have access to evidence-based screening programmes or clinical trials aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of further screening. 'Understanding cancer genetics' answers the following questions:
  • Am I at risk?

Our research focuses on the identification and characterisation of novel genes that have a critical role in carcinoma development. We have had a long-standing interest in familial breast and ovarian cancer. In the past few years we have focused on the characterisation of two genes that are differentially expressed in cancer: TES , a candidate tumour suppressor gene, which maps to human chromosome 7q31 and , a candidate novel oncogene that maps to human chromosome 1q25.We are currently investigating the role of these molecules in cancer.
A number of studies have revealed a high incidence of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for the genetic marker D7S522, which maps to human chromsome 7q31.1. This LOH is seen in a broad range of human tumours, including carcinomas of the breast, colon, ovary, pancreas, prostate, and stomach as well as squamous cell carcinomas of the head-and-neck (Black, Br. J. Cancer 1999; 80 S1: 42). LOH is also observed for the syntenic region (cytogenetic band A2, of mouse chromosome 6) in chemically induced hepatomas and squamous cell carcinomas suggesting that the TSG on human chromosome 7 is conserved. In addition, a gene inducing replicative senescence maps to this region (Black, Br. J. Cancer 1999; 80 S1: 42). Fig. 1:
