106. Can A Vitamin Cut Prostate Cancer Risk?

Can a Vitamin Cut Prostate Cancer Risk?
By Pat Curry , healthAtoZ contributing writer Simply being male and getting older puts you at risk for prostate cancer. But could you cut that risk if you took common vitamins and minerals? Preliminary evidence suggests that you can. Vitamin E and the mineral selenium have been shown in some small studies to cut the risk of prostate cancer between 30 percent and 60 percent. Now, researchers are giving the vitamin and mineral a second look in the largest-ever prostate cancer prevention trial. More than a few good men The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and a network of researchers known as the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) are looking for "quite a few good men" to participate in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial, or SELECT, according to Charles A. Coltman Jr., M.D., chairman of SWOG and director of the San Antonio Cancer Institute in Texas. The study will include a total of 32,400 healthy men of all races and ethnic backgrounds who are age 55 and older (50 and older for African-American men). "Previous research with vitamin E and selenium - in studies that focused on other kinds of cancer - suggested that these nutrients might prevent prostate cancer. SELECT is focused on prostate cancer, and when the study is finished, we will know for sure whether these supplements can prevent the disease," Coltman says.

Abstract: Ladies and Gentlemen:
I came here on vacation; I didn't come here for a lecture. I didn't bring anything. So, I wrote down some things since I was asked to tell you first how I arrived at the cancer treatment. It is a funny story. When I was a physician for internal diseases in Bielefeld [Germany) in 1928, one day I was called to see a lady. I asked her what was wrong with her but on the telephone she didn't want to tell me. So I went there, a little outside of town. Then I asked her "What's wrong?" She told me she was operated on in a big clinic nearby and they found a cancer of the bile duct. I saw the operation scar. She was running a high fever, was jaundiced. I told her, "Sorry, I can do nothing for you. I don't know how to treat cancer. I have not seen results, especially in such an advanced case where there is no longer the possibility of operation." So, she said, "No, doctor, I called because I saw the results in your treatment of tuberculosis and arthritis in various cases. Now, here is a pad and you write down a treatment. On that table over there, there is a book, and in that book, you will be good enough to read to me aloud the chapter called

Does what we Eat Really Affect our Risk?
By: Mohammed A. Khan
The National Cancer Institute estimates that at least 35% of all cancers have a nutritional connection. When lifestyle factors such as smoking and exercise are included, the associated risk becomes much stronger and might be as high as 85%. What we eat makes a big difference in our energy levels, our mood and even our self-esteem. When we choose foods rich in protective factors such as fruits and vegetables, we are also doing something positive for our health and well-being. Links have been established between cancer and diet. Some 40% of cancers in men and 60% in women are believed to be related to problems associated with the Western diet. There is evidence to suggest that some cancers are particularly affected by what we eat and drink; cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, breast, uterine endometrium and prostate.

114. The Cancer Project--Cancer Prevention And Survival--Women And Cancer: Opportunit
A complex and fascinating study by Dr. Daniel Cramer of Harvard University elucidated the relationship between cancer and diet. diet, Nutrition, and cancer.
http://www.cancerproject.org/cpands/women.html
By Neal D. Barnard, M.D. Ask any doctor what women can do to prevent breast cancer, and the response will probably be to get an annual mammogram after age 50, or perhaps after age 40. Mammograms certainly are important. But they do not prevent cancer. They find cancer. Biopsy, surgery, or chemotherapy then follow. It is not that scientists do not have the information. As long ago as 1982, the National Research Council published a report called Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer showing the mountain of evidence already available linking specific dietary factors to cancer of the breast and other organs. But brochures with watered-down recommendations have sat collecting dust at cancer research centers. There was never an organized effort to give women the information they need to make decisions about cancer prevention. In Japan, only about 15 percent of the calories in the diet come from fat. In the U.S., the fat content of the diet has been more than two times higher, around 35 percent. The more fat women consume, the greater their cancer risk. Similar findings have been made within other countries. When the link between fat and cancer was found, researchers did not have to look far for an explanation. Several possibilities presented themselves. First of all, it is known that many breast tumors are "fueled" by estrogens, the female sex hormones for both women and men. But the more estrogen there is, the greater the driving force behind some kinds of breast cancer. The principal estrogen is estradiol, and the amount of estradiol produced by the body is linked to the amount of fat in the diet. On high-fat diets, estradiol production increases. On low-fat diets, it decreases.

Home On Going Vegan Questionnaire Menu for starting out ... Health Discussion Board December 21, 1999 Cancer and the Vegetarian Diet by William Harris, M.D. Cancer is not caused by bacteria, faulty diet, inadequate exercise, environmental contaminants, ionizing radiation, tobacco, viruses, nor heredity. Cancer is caused by a series of genetic mutations in DNA which may be either germline (inherited) or somatic (acquired during life). However, the chances of these mutations occurring in sufficient number to result in cancer is affected by all of the preceding factors. DNA is the critical target molecule in carcinogenesis (1). Although DNA has various repair mechanisms, some types of damage persist and become the basis of the defective molecular biology that is cancer. Oncogenes (tumor genes), tumor suppressing genes, and aptotic genes (causing programmed cell death) normally interact to build normal cells, to prevent excessive growth, and finally to kill the cell before genetic mutations cause it to malfunction. Table 1. U.S. cancer rates.

The news about cancer gets better all the time. This pamphlet is about the best news: that you can take steps to help protect yourself and your family from cancer. Many studies of the habits of people all over the world suggest that you may reduce your risk of getting cancer by making healthy choices about the foods you eat, the beverages you drink, and whatever you smoke. About one-third of all cancer deaths may be related to what we eat. Making positive choices in your diet every day promotes good nutrition and good health and may reduce your risk of some types of cancer. This pamphlet can help you make these choices. (These choices are for healthy people. If you require a special diet, consult a physician or registered dietitian before beginning any modified diet plan. Remember good nutrition alone cannot protect against all diseases or injuries. Be wary of fad diets and supplements that are promoted to prevent or cure cancer). Its recommendations are consistent with seven simple guidelines that have been developed to help people eat a healthy diet: Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Home and Garden Bulletin No. 232. Second edition, 1985. The explanatory text following each of the guideline statements has been written by NCI.
