Dietary supplements no substitute for proper diet
WASHINGTON (AP) Nutritionists call the survey alarming: More older Americans the people most at risk of cancer say they're popping unproven dietary supplements in a quest for tumor-fighting nutrients than trying to eat more cancer-protective foods. Add this newest trend to those hot fad diets and the nation's rising obesity, and cancer experts are increasingly worried. Americans don't seem to heed the warnings that what you put on your plate day after day can truly influence whether you'll get cancer.

The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet by Dr Bob Arnot Reviewed by Stephen Terrass MRNT Buy it Online New York Times
It would seem that The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet is well-meaning and truly committed to the agenda of helping women make an informed choice. The book contains information that could well save many lives. Dr Arnot draws conclusions from numerous research studies, and comes up with a diet and lifestyle plan that heavily promotes the use of soy foods, flaxseed, olive oil, fish oils and lots and lots of vegetables and fruit. At the same time it warns the reader of high-risk foods (e.g. hydrogenated fats, fatty red meat, etc.) and high-risk lifestyle factors (e.g. being over or underweight). The book also tries to explain breast cancer mechanisms and discusses the main drugs being used in treatment and prevention.
Unfortunately, the book is full of flaws, both in terms of content and factual accuracy. The messages it tries to get across are often overstated, occasionally misleading and at times downright contradictory.
The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet
Another glaring weakness in content is the lack of discussion about HRT. Although it is mentioned on occasion, the space allotted to it seems unjustifiably small and incomplete. This is not due to the fact that the book is totally dedicated to nutrition, as he frequently discusses other types of drugs, and in far more depth.

Cancer Prevention Diet, RIP
By Thomas J. Moore
It is time to reconsider the whole idea that the public ought to change its diet to help prevent cancer. The cancer prevention diet was launched on inadequate scientific evidence almost 25 years ago. Now five different randomized clinical trials have evaluated the preventive power of various recommended foods or ingredients, and not a single one has found a measurable effect. Rare is the adult who has not head the message from the National Cancer Institute that to lower the risk of cancer, people ought to eat five servings a day of foods with high fiber, low fat and containing fruit or vegetables. This dietary advice was publicized extensively with millions of dollars from the fruit and produce industry, which was hoping to increase market share for its products. The Larger Lesson The larger lesson, however, is that the diet and cancer story proves how easy it is for health authorities to give dietary advice and the eagerness with which the public embraces it despite the shaky scientific foundations of the whole enterprise. Of all the key aspects of health, diet may be the most difficult to study. We eat different foods at every meal, and diet varies greatly day by day. Most of the food we eat is either excreted or heavily processed in the human chemical factory and reduced to basic compounds such as sugars, trigylcerides and lipids.

Witness the arrival of what may be called the speculative self-help book, or maybe semi-nonfiction though somehow neither of these designations quite does justice to what may be the most irresponsible behavior by mainstream publishers in years. . . . Several prestigious medical groups have called [ Breast Cancer Prevention Diet ] 'misleading,' 'dangerous,' 'premature,' 'irresponsible' and 'a disservice to American women.' . . . however flimsy the science, these books are attractive to publishers because they have a ready-made audience 'victims' who search desperately for a cure to maladies real and imagined. Publishers pretend that such books merely provide information to 'empower' patients. Wall Street Journal

One out of every three Americans is now seeking alternative medical treatment, including dietary and nutritional approaches to cancer and other diseases.
Do you, or a friend or loved one want to use the macrobiotic approach to support health recovery, or to maintain optimal health? If so, the best way to get started is with the guidance of experts. At the week-long Way to Health program the experienced faculty of the Kushi Institute lead classes and workshops on macrobiotic cooking, menu planning, and principles, to give you the training you need to practice macrobiotics correctly. During the program you may meet with a senior teacher for a personal health consultation to adjust the diet for your present condition, and add special dishes and home-remedies if necessary. Family members or friends are welcome to sit in on your session. Offered at least three times most months of the year, you're likely to find program dates that meet your time frame.

Macrobiotics and Cancer
In the first major scientific study of the macrobiotic approach to cancer, researchers at Tulane University reported that the 1-year survival rate among patients with pancreatic cancer was significantly higher among those who modified their diet than among those who did not (17 months versus 6 months). The one-year survival rate was 54.2 percent in the macrobiotic patients versus 10.0 percent in the controls. All comparisons were statistically significant.
For patients with metastatic prostate cancer, a case control study demonstrated that those who ate macrobiotically lived longer (177 months compared to 91 months) and enjoyed an improved quality of life. The researchers concluded that the macrobiotic approach may be an effective adjunctive treatment to conventional treatment or in primary management of cancers with a nutritional association. "This exploratory analysis suggests that a strict macrobiotic diet is more likely to be effective in the long-term management of cancer than are diets that provide a variety of other foods," the study concluded.

Diet and Cancer Prevention DIET AND CANCER PREVENTION A wide variety of factors are involved in the development of cancer. Some are related to family history, while others are related to lifestyle and diet. Avoiding smoking, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and moderate amounts of red and processed meats, keeping body weight within the healthy range for height and keeping alcohol consumption to a moderate level, all help to reduce the risk of cancer. WHAT IS CANCER? The body is made up of small units called cells. New cells are constantly produced to replace cells that have become worn out or damaged. New cells are also made during growth, eg during infancy. Normally, the body regulates the growth of new cells but occasionally abnormal cells are produced. These abnormal cells do not function properly and if they are not destroyed by the body, they may develop and increase rapidly. This is cancer. The abnormal cells may also spread to other parts of the body and multiply there. Cancer can occur in different parts of the body. In the UK, the most common cancers in men are lung cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer. The most common cancers in women are breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer.

Food contributes much to the quality of our lives and is more than just a physical need. Mealtimes are an important and enjoyable part of family and social life. Many people with cancer experience eating problems. This section is divided into four parts and is intended to help you overcome these difficulties. Part One , The building-up diet is a diet high in energy and protein and has been designed specifically for people with cancer who have lost, or are losing, weight or can only manage to eat a little. This diet is not recommended for people with cancer who are eating well and have not lost weight. Part Two , Eating problems has helpful hints for people with cancer who have eating problems caused by their disease or treatment. For example, you may be feeling sick, have mouth ulcers or be too tired to cook a meal. Part Three , A healthy eating guide is for people with cancer who do not have eating or weight loss problems, but would like to follow a healthy diet. Part Four , Information on alternative diets discusses whether alternative or complementary diets can be helpful, or not, for people who have cancer. Information on diet as part of complementary therapy is included in the section on

The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet: The Powerful Foods, Supplements, and Drugs That Can Save Your Life
by Robert Arnot, M.D.
rom one of the most visible and highly respected figures in medical journalism comes a book that can literally save lives. During the past several years, doctors at leading institutions across the nation have been investigating the relationship between breast cancer and diet. The recent flood of medical studies confirm that what a woman eats can have a dramatic impact on whether or not she contracts the disease. In The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet, Dr. Bob Arnot, in his unique, expert fashion, has synthesized this research into an eating program that finally enables women to fight back. The breast cancer prevention diet is designed with all women in mind; whether you want to guard yourself against the onset of breast cancer, or protect yourself from recurrence, the diet offers valuable information that will address your particular needs, including plans for: -women with high estrogen, who are therefore at a higher risk -postmenopausal women with lower estrogen levels -breast cancer survivors -women with a familial history of breast cancer -young women who want to take precautionary measures

Although ovarian cancer is a relatively uncommon neoplasm, accounting for an estimated 4% of cases among women in 2002, mortality from this cancer is high. Ovarian cancer is not easy to detect, making early diagnosis difficult. Therefore, identification of modifiable factors contributing to its etiology is very important. The literature concerning the relationship between dietary components and ovarian cancer is limited. Reduced risks of ovarian cancer have been associated with higher intakes of dietary fiber, vitamin A, a-carotene, and fruits and vegetables, whereas increased risk have been associated with higher intakes of tot and animal fat, cholesterol and lactose intakes, meat, eggs and whole milk. Recent research has identified food components, phytochemicals that may have important anticarcinogenic activities. These include phytoestrogens, phytosterols, and flavonoids. McCann et al. say they believe that the relationship between phytochemical intake and ovarian cancer has not been previously investigated. Therefore, this group of researchers investigated the relationship of selected nutrients, other food components including phytochemicals, and food groups with risk of ovarian cancer.
