PROSTATE CANCER AND DIET Gabe Mirkin, M.D. All men will develop prostate cancer if they live long enough and lack of vitamin Dmay be the most likely cause. For the first time, Harvard researchers offer a logical explanation for the very high incidence of prostate cancer (3). Prostate cancer is most common in men who eat a high fat, high-saturated fat, high -polyunsaturated fat and high partially hydrogenated fat diet (1), found in meat, chicken, dairy products and extracted vegetable oils. Prostate cancer is also very common in men who eat a high-calcium and low vitamin D diet (2). For example, diary products increase risk and vitamin D supplements reduce risk. A high-meat and high dairy diet lowers blood levels of the active form of vitamin D [1,25(OH)(2)D]. Meat is loaded with phosphorous, and diary products are loaded with calcium and phosphorus which lower blood levels of the active form of vitamin D called 1,25(OH)(2)D vitamin D. Sulfur-containing amino acids from animal protein make blood acidic which suppresses active vitamin D production. Additionally, high fructose consumption in sugary products lowers blood levels vitamin D (2,3). So the combination of meat, chicken, diary products, calcium supplements and lack of vitamin D combine to increase a man's chances of getting prostate cancer.

By Carol Ceresa, Nutritionist
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could prevent or delay the onset of cancer, especially since children and adults with Fanconi anemia are at increased risk? I believe in the value of overall good nutrition and in carefully evaluating and trying some products and supplements that may be of benefit. To have the best strategies for fighting cancer, we need to consider the basics. Cancer starts with a single cell that gets out of control. The causes of cancer are not entirely clear. Cancer promoters, called carcinogens, include viruses and chemicals, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors (air pollution, smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet). No single food or nutrient causes or prevents cancer. However, there are steps that will help reduce your risk for cancer. Eat a plan-based diet.

Abstract: Ladies and Gentlemen:
I came here on vacation; I didn't come here for a lecture. I didn't bring anything. So, I wrote down some things since I was asked to tell you first how I arrived at the cancer treatment. It is a funny story. The Healing of Cancer It was a big book of about 1,200 pages on folk medicine and in the middle there was that chapter. I started to read. That book was edited by three schoolteachers and one physician. None of them practiced medicine. So they put together that book. I read that chapter. In it there was something about Hippocrates who gave these patients a special soup. I should like to tell you, we use that soup at the present time! That soup from that book, out of the practice of Hippocrates - 550 years before Christ! He was the greatest physician at that time, and I even think the greatest physician of all time. He had the idea that the patient has to be detoxified with the soup and with some enemas and so on.

Study: Fruit and veggie-filled diet void of colon cancer protection
From wire reports WASHINGTON (CNN) Eating fruits and veggies is definitely good for you, researchers say, but does little to protect people from colon and rectal cancer. The finding, in a study released Wednesday, counters 20 years of research that has found some evidence of colorectal cancer protection from a diet infused with fruits and vegetables.

However, the researchers and other cancer specialists stress that a diet high in fiber which comes from fruits, vegetables and whole grains has other health benefits that still make it worthwhile. "It's still a very good idea to eat a diet that's high in fresh fruits and vegetables, both for its direct benefit on heart disease and reducing adult-onset diabetes," said Dr. Michael Thun

From Lifetimetv.com Q: I'm always hearing about the cancer-preventative properties of foods such as blueberries and fiber and the cancer-triggering properties of foods such as red meat. What kind of diet do you recommend for optimal cancer prevention? A: There is no doubt that eating a diet rich in plant foods, especially fruits and vegetables, decreases the risk of cancer. In fact, it is estimated that 3 to 4 million cases of cancer could be prevented each year with healthful eating and other positive lifestyle tweaks, such as quitting smoking.

(CNN) Researchers have found no evidence that a low-fat diet helps reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer, according to a new study in the March 10 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Michelle Holmes, of Harvard University Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, led the 14-year study which followed 88,795 women who were cancer-free at the start of the research in 1980. Researchers looked for a relationship between breast cancer and fat intake by examining the participants' long-term diet through food frequency questionnaires administered in 1980, 1984, 1986 and 1990. The analysis included different types of fat as well as total fat. "We found no evidence that lower intake of total fat or particular types of fat over 14 years of follow-up was associated with decreased risk of breast cancer," the researchers concluded in the article published in JAMA.

Controversy about diet and breast cancer
May 25, 1999 Web posted at: 10:05 AM EDT (1405 GMT) In this story: Pieces of the Puzzle Two sides, one coin Other risks Moving forward ... RELATEDS By Cathy Lu (WebMD) The next time you think about grilling a steak or ordering that cheesecake, you may want to think again. These are the foods to which some scientists attribute the skyrocketing incidence of breast cancer in the United States. One-in-eight women living in the United States will be stricken with breast cancer. But are the fatty foods that lurk in your fridge really the villains? There is much debate about this topic, and the abounding number of studies do little to clear the air.

    Elaine Lanza, Ph.D. c
and Gladys Block, Ph.D. d As scientific research progresses, the evidence that dietary patterns, foods, nutrients, and other dietary constituents are closely associated with the risk for several types of cancer becomes more compelling. And while it is not yet possible to provide quantitative estimates of the overall risks, it has been estimated that 35 percent of cancer deaths may be related to dietary factors (Doll and Peto, 1981). The recommendations for dietary change currently before the American public are based on years of scientific research and offer potential for an effective public health approach to cancer prevention. Currently available research shows that diets low in fat and high in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and grain products are associated with reduced risks for many cancers. Dietary Fats Fat consumption in the United States is much higher than that needed to meet the physiological needs for energy and essential fatty acids. The average U.S. diet is estimated to contain approximately 37 percent of calories from fat. Dietary recommendations are to decrease total fat intake to 30 percent of calories. The major sources of fat in the American diet are added fats and oils used as spreads, cooking fats, and salad oils as well as the fat in meats and whole milk dairy products. Because dietary fat intake is highly correlated with calorie intake, the question has been raised as to whether fat intake or calorie intake is the major dietary factor affecting cancer risk. However, the few studies that have addressed the relative importance of fat intake versus calorie intake suggest that both fat and calorie intake have independent effects. Dietary fat is the most concentrated source of energy of all the nutrients and supplies nine calories per gram compared to four calories per gram from either carbohydrate or protein. In general, a reduction in dietary fat intake is accompanied by a decrease in total calorie intake and body weight (Boyd et al., 1990; Henderson et al., 1990).

If the results of a recent study hold true, you might consider reaching for a tall glass of the one percent. However, some experts say a grain of salt might go well with your beverage, too. The study, published in the September 23 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association and discussed at the annual meeting of the American Dietetic Association in October, found that people who ate a diet rich in low-fat dairy products may have fewer abnormal, pre-cancerous cell growths in the colon than people on conventional diets. This may be encouraging news for people fighting colorectal cancer, which claims more than 56,000 American lives every year, according to the American Cancer Society. About 130,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.
