Study: Veggies won't cut breast cancer risk
In this story: Not the last word? Steps against breast cancer RELATED STORIES, SITES By Elizabeth Cohen CNN Medical Correspondent BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables will help cut a woman's chances of getting all sorts of dreaded diseases, but breast cancer isn't one of them, according to a new study being published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In the study, researchers tracked the diets of 351,825 women and found no statistically significant difference in fruit and vegetable consumption between the women who developed breast cancer and those who didn't. "Of course, I'm disappointed," said Ralph Coates, an epidemiologist and associate director for science at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's division of cancer prevention and control. "I'd hoped there would be something out there for breast cancer because I'd like to see something women can do besides getting screened."

The theory that a healthy diet and regular exercise can be key factors in staving off cancer surfaces again. The latest support comes from researchers spanning from the United Kingdom, across the Atlantic, to the shores of the Pacific Oceanresearchers at the Imperial College of Medicine and the UK's Institute of Food Research studying colon cancer, and investigators at the University of California at Los Angeles looking into prostate cancer. The UCLA researchers found that a low-fat, high-fiber diet and daily exercise can slow prostate cancer cell growth. "This is the first study to directly measure the effects of diet and exercise on inhibiting growth of prostate cancer cells and it strongly suggests that a low-fat diet and exercise regimen favorably affects the levels of hormones or growth factors that influence prostate cancer growth," says William Aronson , senior author of the study that appeared recently in Journal of Urology Aronson and colleagues at the Jonsson Cancer Center and the department of physiological science studied two groups of healthy men, aged 38 to 74a short-term group comprised of 13 overweight men who did not have a history of eating healthy or exercising regularly, and a long-term group that featured eight men who had subscribed to healthy living for 14 years or more. They put both groups on a strict 11-day diet and exercise program. "The diet contained less than 10 percent of calories from fat, 15-20 percent from protein, and 70-75 percent from carbohydrates, while exercise focused on walking," explains Aronson. Then, the UCLA investigators combined the serum samples with prostate cancer cells in test tubes.

Bromelain as a supplement might help ease the problem of furballs, besides sinus problems because of its anti inflammatory properties.
The only basic I have learned about kitty cats is that you can't give them enough love.
If you cat is prone to illness, switching to high quality food helps immensely. Anything that supports their immune system. Shallow glass water dishes are the safest. Who would ever have thought that plastic being hard to clean might create the feline acne seen in some cats? Who would have thought that some of those imported ceramic dishes would have toxins leech into the water? or metallic bowls give the water a tainted taste besides also getting into the water? or distilled water eliminating vital minerals?

How many of us know that kitty cats can get fatty liver disease, especially if they are obsese if they skip a few meals?

Dr. Budwig holds a Ph.D. in Natural Science, has undergone medical training, and was schooled in pharmaceutical science, physics, botany and biology. She is best known for her extensive research on the properties and benefits of flaxseed oil combined with sulphurated proteins in the diet, and over the years has published a number of books on the subject, including "CancerA Fat Problem," "The Death of the Tumor," and "True Health Against Arteriosclerosis, Heart Infarction & Cancer." Dr. Budwig found that the blood of seriously ill cancer patients was deficient in certain important essential ingredients which included substances called phosphatides and lipoproteins, while the blood of a healthy person always contains sufficient quantities of these essential ingredients.

Cancer Prevention Diet
by Jill E. Stansbury, N.D. The potential of protective phytochemicals Many people's lives have been touched in some way by cancer. Maybe they've lost a relative, a friend or an acquaintance; maybe they had a scare as a result of an annual physical. Regardless of what drives your customers to ask about cancer prevention, it is a perfect opportunity to discuss diet and supplements. So where do you start? A dizzying amount of information exists on cancer-preventive food and supplements. The easiest step people can take is to modify their diets. By eating a rainbow of food colors or by emphasizing certain food groups, people will incorporate a variety of protective phytochemicals into their diets. We are exposed to oxidizing- and cancer-producing substances daily, but compounds found in vegetables help limit the free radical initiation and DNA damage caused by these carcinogens and therefore appear to lower the incidence of various types of cancer. A Rainbow of Protection
Pigmented plant compounds appear to be important anti-inflammatories and antioxidants, and people who eat more of them have a decreased risk of cancer. Plant pigments are mostly polyphenolic, meaning they are multiphenol-containing molecules, and include chlorophyll, carotenoids and bioflavonoids.

Cancer and diet: Eating right pays off
November 14, 1995
Web posted at: 4:20 p.m. EST From Correspondent Elizabeth Schwartz ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) One cancer prevention method could be as close as your refrigerator. "Our best estimate is that if we all ate a perfect, healthy diet, we could eliminate maybe 35 percent of cancer deaths," said Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society. ( 95K AIFF sound or 95K WAV sound We've heard over and over again: keep your weight down, eat more fruits, vegetables and grains and stay away from fat. Adding certain foods to the diet has been shown to prevent a variety of cancers, from breast and prostate to colorectal. But what's needed is real food, not vitamin and mineral supplements from a bottle. "It would be easy if we could just take a pill," but that's not the answer, Thun said.
"Cancer is not inevitable"
Dr. Micheal Thun, American Cancer Society
Doctors say better eating habits over the past 60 years have reduced stomach cancer deaths by 85 percent. "It's an example that cancer is not inevitable," Thun said. ( 150K AIFF sound or 150K WAV sound ) Sixty years ago, transportation wasn't as efficient as it is now, so people had less access to fresh produce. And refrigeration was less sophisticated than today, so people were forced to eat more smoke and preserved meats. Nitrates, used to preserve those meats, have been linked to cancer.

Guide Review The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet , by Robert Arnot
Dr. Robert Arnot is familiar to many as a TV personality. His ability to translate scientific research into everyday language makes this book easy to follow. The danger in making concepts too simple is that they may be misunderstood and this is true here. Diet is only one aspect of the risk factors in breast cancer. Belief that diet can prevent cancer may be disappointing. However, you can lower your risk for breast cancer by following these dietary guidelines. Women with breast cancer should avoid the high soy intake and supplements he recommends.

  • Research shows that vegetarians have lower rates of colon cancer than non-vegetarians, and that incidence of colon and rectal cancer has been strongly linked to the consumption of meat. In a study of over 88 000 women aged 34 to 59 years, women eating red meat daily ran over twice the risk of developing colon cancer than women eating red meat less than once a month. Exactly how a vegetarian diet is protective against colon cancer is unclear and a great deal of research is being carried out in this area. It has been suggested that secondary bile acids may be a causal factor, and research has shown that vegetarians have lower levels of secondary bile acids than non-vegetarians. The role of dietary fibre in prevention of colon cancer may also be important. Other dietary components associated with high fibre foods, such as folate, have also been implicated as having protective effects.

Prostate cancer has been strongly linked to meat consumption.
  • In a study of nearly 48,000 men aged between 40 and 75, those eating red meat five or more times a week were 2.6 times more likely to suffer from prostate cancer than those who ate it once a week or less. Another study looked at the incidence of prostate cancer amongst 14,000 Seventh Day Adventists and found a relationship between increased risk and increasing animal product consumption.
