Quebec zoo looks to cloning after endangered gorilla fails to reproduce
MICHELLE MACAFEE GRANBY, Que. (CP) - Mumba's in no mood for love. And when you're talking about a 41-year-old gorilla, Viagra and sex therapy just aren't realistic solutions. So after years of clinical observation, head-scratching and failed matchmaking, Mumba's keepers at the Granby Zoo have pretty much given up hope of having their oldest bachelor reproduce. "He's not inclined to copulate at all," says Clement Lanthier, the zoo's director of animal health. With all other avenues exhausted, the zoo has turned to cloning as its last hope that Mumba can one day contribute to the genetic diversity experts say is crucial for the survival of endangered species such as the lowland gorilla. "The technology is not available now but we want to be prepared," says Lanthier. "We are still very interested in getting some kind of young from this male." Mumba is one of about 725 lowland gorillas living in zoos around the world. Their life expectancy is between 45 and 50 years. Given his age, Mumba's sex drive isn't likely to shift into high gear now. When he dies, the zoo plans to collect and freeze tissue from the 190-kilogram beast.

Zoo Uses the Internet to Find a Bride for a Hippo A zoo in Osaka has posted a message on its Website and has sent e-mail notes to other zoos around the world asking them for help in finding a bride for a male hippopotamus named Tetsuo.
Z ookeepers at Tennoji Zoo in central Osaka had arranged a mate for Tetsuo three times, but each time the attempt fell through. The first try was in March 1998, when the zoo located a 17-month-old female in Puebla, Mexico. The hippo broke her leg, however, and the planned union had to be canceled. Another hippo was then offered, but zoo keepers later discovered it was actually a male.
D iligent efforts by Tennoji Zoo turned up a prospective mate in an eight-month-old at a Canadian zoo. Unfortunately, the "bride-to-be" died in an accident before she could be delivered to Tennoji Zoo.
T etsuo was born to Natsuko and Futoshi, his mother and father, 15 years ago. Futoshi died shortly after Tetsuo's birth, however, and so he was raised by his mother, with whom Tetsuo shared the same cage and pool until last summer. Tetsuo moved out because he's now a fully-grown adult, equivalent in human years to a 30 year old, and ready for marriage.
Z oo attendants are looking for a mate outside Japan because most of the approximately 60 hippos here, including Tetsuo, are descendants of Jukichi and Fukukohippos that were kept at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoyaand are therefore related to one another.

Animals/Pets Visit a Zoo! Note: The Earlton Zoo has undergone a recent transformation. The exotics such as the tigers, lions and zebras have found new homes in other Canadian zoos. The focus is now on the facinating wildlife of Canada's North. Visitors are welcome for guided tours of the facility. They can be found online at Temiskaming Wildlife Centre Since it opened in 1984, the Earlton Zoo has become a very popular attraction in Northern Ontario. Located just north of Earlton, Ontario the zoo sits on 35 acres and offers over 50 species of animals. Rarely seen North American animals such as timber wolf, lynx, elk and moose can be seen up close. As well, the zoo displays animals from around the world including tigers, lions and Japanese macaque. The Zoo also has a refuge area that cares for injured or orphaned wildlife such as moose, calves, bear cubs and beaver kits. While we toured two young moose were being tended to including the one at the left. As well, two tiny orphaned bear cubs were sleeping soundly in their cage. The Zoo actively researches hand rearing techniques of these distressed animals and aims to reintroduce them back to their wild habitat unless circumstances prevent it.

Insect zoo at Kansas State causing a real buzz. By Associated Press, 10/30/2002
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Bug lovers can now visit a collection of household pests and more exotic creatures at Kansas State University's new insect zoo. The collection of more than 1,000 living insects is housed at the visitors center at the school's Horticulture Gardens and iscared for by a full-time keeper. The zoo, which was dedicated Oct. 18, includes a replica of a home kitchen. Visitors are encouraged to peer through p lexiglass panels that enclose cockroach-filled cabinet drawers and flies on the drain board. "We want to deliver valuable and environmentally sensitive information to the public, and tell them, `Don't just call the exterminator and start spraying,"' says department of entomology chairman Sonny Ramaswamy, who has attracted attention at university open houses with his popular cockroach racing demonstrations. "There are ways to use simple cleanliness techniques to take care of these things." Cockroaches also flourish at the new zoo, including several exotic species that are featured in a walk-through display simulating an underground environment of a tropical rain forest.

91. A New Direction For The Valley Zoo

A New Direction for the Valley Zoo
A report by the Voice for Animals Society to City Council concerning the future of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, dated 1997.
Executive Summary
Prospects for the Edmonton Valley Zoo
In light of the prominence given to turning Major Attractions into a self sustaining enterprise (City '97: Preparing for the Future, Opportunity 9, Stream X), it has become increasingly urgent that City Council ask themselves if the Valley Zoo can remain a viable operation. The zoo can best be described as an old fashioned menagerie badly in need of upgrading and modernization. At the same time, the recommendation to Council is that funding be reduced and further capital grants be eliminated. The zoo could prove to be an embarrassment, rather than an asset, to the city without a massive infusion of money to achieve a standard that is acceptable today and in the future. This report illustrates how far the Edmonton Valley Zoo has fallen behind other Canadian zoos, not only in quality but also in the amount of funding it receives.
The 21st Century Zoo
As environmental problems continue to mount and many species of animals are diminishing in number or facing extinction, the role zoos play now and the role (if any) they will play in the future must be carefully considered. Although there are many different opinions about the question of animals in captivity, there are some areas of agreement emerging among experts and other respected people. Consensus is that it is no longer justifiable to keep animals imprisoned as reproductive dead-ends, and if we must have captive animals, we must also give meaning to their captivity by using them as ambassadors for conservation and protection of species in the wild. These ought to be minimum standards for a credible zoo. The Valley Zoo does not, to any appreciable extent, meet these qualifications.
