PIERRE : Hello and welcome to ze Royal Canadian Zoo of Ontario. My name is Pierre and I will be your guide today.
JOHN : Hello, there. My name's John Quincy Adams, no relation to the former U.S. president John Quincy Adams, and this is my lovely wife, Diedre.
PIERRE : Please to meet you.
JOHN : Hey, you've got some funky accent. I mean I knew you Canadians talked funny but this guy takes the cake.
PIERRE : Well, I'm French.
JOHN : Well, what the hell you doing in Canada then?
John and Diedre laugh hysterically.
SUPERIMPOSED CAPTION: THE FRENCH ARE SILLY.

PIERRE : Ah...well, me and ze whole Royal Canadian Zoo of Ontario staff are glad you decided to make the stop here in your travels. SUPERIMPOSED CAPTION: THE FRENCH EAT SNAILS. JOHN : Hey, tell me. Virtual Tourist of Alberta and the Canadian Rockies
Howdy!
The largest city in Alberta , Calgary (a.k.a. "Cowtown" to fans and detractors alike) is located in the south-western part of the province. Calgary is home to the world-famous "Calgary Exhibition and Stampede," and is ideally situated in the province for use as a "base" to explore the natural, cultural, and historic wonders of Alberta . Home to much of the Canadian oil and gas industry, Calgary is a vibrant modern city filled with skyscrapers and modern amenities. The city has taken care to ensure that numerous "green" areas are easily accessible, combining the best of both worlds. The City of Calgary website provides extensive information on Calgary's history, economy and government. The City of Calgary has a population of roughly 850,000, and lies at an altitude of 1,049m. The weather in Calgary varies quite dramatically, from lows reaching -40C (albeit rarely) in the winter, to highs in excess of 30C in the summer. Calgary is subject to periodic "chinook winds" of warm air from the mountains during the winter which can cause the temperature to rise by more than 15C in just a few hours.
Some History
The human history of the Calgary region begins, as with all Alberta, with the native Canadians, over 12,000 years ago. The cultures which existed during the arrival of the European traders and settlers were the Blackfoot, Sarcee and Stoney. The first Europeans included David Thompson and Peter Fidler in the 1780's and 1790's, both of whom were associated with the fur trade.

Children willing to do their part to save the planet and its creatures
SAMANTHA CRITCHELL
NEW YORK (AP) - Children seem to have a natural affinity toward animals - they want to see them, hold them and learn more about them whenever they have the chance. Have you ever noticed how young zoo visitors widen their eyes as they pass the bears, big cats and elephants? Or, how long the line is for a chance to touch the stingrays at the aquarium? These same children also realize it will largely be up to them to maintain an environment in which these creatures thrive. Over the past year, nearly 60,000 youngsters responded to a poll about the condition of the planet that was conducted by Proprietary Media on behalf of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. The poll was offered at zoos, aquariums, schools and at the association's Web site. The results show that children believe in volunteerism and they are eager to do their part to ensure animals always have a place on the earth. "Three main things came out of the poll: one, kids think the environment has some serious problems; two, kids want to help; three, they think they really can make a difference," says Bruce Carr, the association's director of conservation. "Points two and three are the gratifying things to hear." The challenge now is to take this desire to make things right and parlay it into action. It will work best if an emotional connection between children and conservation is established when the children are young so they'll have a lifelong, vested interest, he says.

What are zoonoses?
  • Zoonoses are diseases that are passed from animals to humans. People with weakened immune systems, the elderly and young children are more likely to get these. Some zoonoses are very dangerous to humans, like E. coli 0157:H7 , salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis and rabies. Doctors can usually treat people with zoonoses. However, some untreated zoonoses can be deadly.
