The Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) said it has refused to renew the Aldergrove zoo's membership, because "there were some concerns that we identified that were not addressed," said CAZA president Bruce Dougan. Zoo officials in Aldergrove, however, said they chose not to renew their membership when it came due in January. Greater Vancouver Zoo animal-care manager Jamie Dorgan said the local facility decided not to pay its CAZA dues "to put pressure on ourselves" to complete a hippo barn after CAZA requested upgrades to the current enclosure. Dorgan expects the new, heated barn to be finished by the end of this year.

The first zoos were private menageries, usually belonging to kings. After the French Revolution, the Paris zoo was opened to the public. Over time, the mission of zoos has shifted from simply displaying exotic animals, to scientific study (London Zoo was the world's first scientific zoo in 1828), and, latterly, to breeding them, and in particular maintaining populations of animals that are endangered or even extinct in the wild.

Tue Jan 13 18:48:30 EST 2004 Association says Aldergrove facility faces loss of accreditation Nicholas Read Vancouver Sun Tuesday, January 13, 2004 The president of the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums says the Greater Vancouver Zoo must determine a plan to fix its hippopotamus enclosure this week or risk losing its association accreditation. Bruce Dougan said Monday that it would be up to the association's board to set a deadline on when the enclosure must be fixed, but he said he wanted to know from zoo officials this week what they plan to do. "Something has to be done there," Dougan said in a phone interview from Moncton, N.B. "To be an accredited member of this association you have to provide adequate care for animals. If they cannot do that, they cannot be a member of this association." full story: http://www.canada.com/vancouver/vancouversun/story.asp?id=B3802691-1B4F-4175-9

    Zoos: Myth and Reality
    By Rob Laidlaw
In recent years, zoos have become the target of intense public scrutiny and criticism. In response, many have tried to repackage themselves as institutions devoted to wildlife conservation, public education and animal welfare. But most zoos fail to live up to their own propaganda and vast numbers of zoo animals continue to endure lives of misery and deprivation.
Nearly every zoo, from the smallest amateur operation to the largest professional facilities, claims to be making important contributions to conservation, usually through participation in endangered species captive propagation initiatives and public education programming. The zoo world buzzword of the moment is "conservation."
Yet, with an estimated 10,000 organized zoos worldwide, representing tens of thousands of human workers and billions of dollars in operating budgets, only a tiny percentage allocate the resources necessary to participate in captive propagation initiatives, and fewer still provide any real support for the in situ protection of wildlife and their natural habitat.
    Humane Treatment
Studies have shown that animals can suffer physically, mentally and emotionally. For this reason, captive environments must be complex enough to compensate for the lack of natural freedom and choice, and they must facilitate expression of natural movement and behavior patterns. This principle has been widely espoused by the modern zoo community in various articles, books and television documentaries.
