Photo by: Zoo New England The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) sponsors a Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP), in which the National Zoo participates. Under this program, participating zoos and aquariums agree to grant free admission to current members of other participating institutions. RAP covers admission to the main facility on normal operating days and hours but may exclude exhibits or events requiring an additional fee. The number of visitors admitted with a family membership may vary depending on the zoo or aquarium, and the maximum age of children so admitted may also differ. Participating institutions may treat membership categories, parking fees, guest privileges, and gift shop discounts differently. In addition to RAP participants, other zoos and aquariums offer admission and other discounts to members of other institutions on a case-by-case basis.

Canadian zoos to begin vaccinating against West Nile virus
Last Updated Fri, 23 Aug 2002 19:33:33 TORONTO - Like their U.S. counterparts, Canadian zoos are preparing to vaccinate animals susceptible to the West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne disease that continues to spread throughout North America. The vaccine only became available this week in Canada. Already the Toronto Zoo has placed its order, the Calgary Zoo is planning to, and the Winnipeg Zoo is considering it.
Dr. William Radley of the Toronto Zoo talks about the vaccination "We have not identified West Nile near the zoo, but it has been found throughout Canada, especially southern Ontario," Dr. William Radley, executive director of biology and conservation at the Toronto Metro Zoo, told CBC Newsworld's Newsworld Today. "We will vaccinate those we think could be susceptible as a preventive measure, just as we do for rabies and other diseases," he said. Radley said staff will begin vaccination in the next few days, injecting those that are considered high-risk. These include members of the bird population such as flamingos, crows and bald eagles, as well as horses and related species such as the rhinoceros.
The West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease The first West Nile cases showed up in the United States in 1999 and the virus has already covered half the continent. More than two-dozen Americans have died from the disease. In Canada, infected birds have been found as far west as Regina. Zoologists are confident it will continue its westward movement in 2003.

News Funny Money Mad cow threatens baby reindeer U.S. borders are blocked, so Canadian zoos have a breeding problem. January 28, 2004: 4:31 PM EST TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian zoos may have to curb breeding programs for some rare animals, because a U.S. ban on imports of giraffe, deer and other ruminants means there is no market south of the border for the babies. The ban on imports of ruminants animals with hooves and multiple stomachs was imposed last May after a single case of mad cow disease was found on a Canadian farm. Canada responded with similar curbs after a case of the brain-wasting disease showed up on a farm in Washington state in December. But while Canada allows exceptions to its import ban for rare animals, the United States is keeping its border closed. "We are not going to breed our (reindeer) until the ban is lifted," the curator of the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba said on Wednesday. Bob Wrigley said the zoo's reindeer herd has risen to 25 from 12, and the zoo expects six more babies to be born in the spring animals that under normal circumstances would have found a home in the United States.

But while Canada allows exceptions to its import ban for rare animals, the United States is keeping its border closed. "We are not going to breed our (reindeer) until the ban is lifted," said the curator of the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba. "It would be improper herd management to breed them this year," without knowing if they could be sent to other zoos, Wrigley said. Mark Hemker of the Hemker Wildlife Park in Freeport, Minnesota said he needs the Canadian-bred reindeer to maintain his herd because they are not related to his animals. The Winnipeg zoo is not worried about its reindeer herd but says endangered animals who participate in breeding programs around the world must leave Canada to breed because there are no suitable animals at home. Recognizing the importance of maintaining gene pools and breeding programs for rare and exotic animals, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has relaxed its import ban for animals headed for zoos and research facilities and wants its American counterpart to do the same.

    Lynx canadensis
    Status
Native to both Newfoundland and Labrador. Habitat Prefers old growth boreal forests with dense undercover, but the lynx will live in other habitats where undercover and prey numbers are adequate. They are often found in regenerating forests after a fire - where the snowshoe hare population has increased. When prey is scarce in the forested areas, the lynx will venture on to the tundra for food. Range Found in the boreal forest across Canada from Newfoundland to the Yukon Territory. Lynx are usually found in areas that are occupied by snowshoe hare. Food During the winter, about 75% of the lynx’s diet is snowshoe hare. Lynx populations peak approximately every 10 years, shortly after a peak in the snowshoe hare’s population cycle. Also, the lynx population will decrease after a crash in the snowshoe hare population. When snowshoe hare numbers are low, the lynx’s diet is supplemented by various rodents and birds such as voles, squirrels, grouse and sparrows. Moose and caribou (usually calves) may account for some of the lynx’s diet, but they rarely attack large prey. The lynx is nocturnal and hunts at night. It uses its sight and hearing mainly for hunting, focusing less on its sense of smell. To catch prey, the lynx will wait silently near a trail for movement. The lynx stalks and ambushes its prey.
