Prime Ministers and Presidents
At the first meeting between Prime Minister Paul Martin and U.S. President George W. Bush in January 2004 in Mexico, analysts carefully watched the two men, looking for the slightest indication of how they feel about each other. Both Martin's gleeful laughter and Bush's sniggering at Martin's statement to the press in French were fodder for pundits and comics alike. It seems the relationship between the leaders of the two countries is seen as a microcosm of Canada-U.S. relations in general. Bush "a moron," is probably a better reflection of the relationships our leaders have had over the years than Martin and Bush's cordial breakfast meeting in Mexico. In his book The Presidents and the Prime Ministers , author Lawrence Martin mentions how John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, "would alienate all of Washington with displays of contempt for the presidents and their men." Indeed, the subtitle of Martin's book catches the true spirit of relations across the world's longest undefended border:

Introduction
The status of the prime minister has been described as primus inter pares : Latin for "first among equals." This concept defines not only the prime minister's relationship with Cabinet, but also, in a sense, his or her relationship with the public in our modern democratic society. Drawing on a wide variety of documents and artifacts, this site explores five main themes (see the menu at left) relating to Canada's prime ministers. The site examines our leaders' political careers as well as their private lives. It also sheds light on Canadians' perceptions of our prime ministers. From Macdonald to Martin, our political leaders are twenty-one individuals who have made a difference, shaping Canada's identity, sometimes in profound ways.

As one of Canada's most successful finance ministers, Martin was a key developer of the modern Liberal party platform and salvaged the sagging economy. He hopes to have the same effect as prime minister, and has promised to have a more focused and energetic government than that of Jean Chrétien.
