The Prime Ministers of Canada While there is a long standard tradition of considering John A. Macdonald Canada 's first Prime Minister, since he was prime minister after Canadian Confederation , a number of modern scholars, foremost amongst them John Ralston Saul , argue that Robert Baldwin and Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine are truly Canada's first Prime Ministers. Buried at Cataraqui Cemetery,
Kingston, Ontario Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, has always been ranked among the country's great political leaders. Born in Scotland and raised near Kingston, Ontario, Mac- donald was already a political veteran in 1864, when he played a key role in the making of the Canadian Confederation. He was the undisputed choice to be the first prime minister. "Sir John A." held the office from July 1, 1867 until 1873, and again from 1878 until his death in 1891. A visionary statesman and a determined Conservative partisan, Macdonald was a brilliant parliamentary tactician and a much-loved campaign leader. He said he intended to see the gristle of a nation harden into bone, and he believed a strong central government was essential to Canada. His National Policy of tariff protection, westward expansion, and a railway to the Pacific helped lay the basis for a transcontinental nation.

Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers About the National Program Canada has been blessed by able and dynamic prime ministers who have developed a vision for our nation and its place in the world. Their public careers have had a profound impact on our history and evolution as a country. In recognition of this contribution, our deceased prime ministers have been designated as persons of national historic significance. In addition, to acknowledge their important role, in 1999 the Government of Canada announced a program designed to protect and honour the grave sites of our Canadian prime ministers. The objective of the National Program for the Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers is to ensure that the grave sites are conserved and recognized in a respectful and dignified manner. Another important objective of the program is to provide Canadians with information on the lives and accomplishments of each former prime minister, as well as the locations of their final resting places.

R .B. Bennett became prime minister of Canada in 1930. The worst depression of the century was hitting the country, and economic conditions would blunt his prospects as prime minister. A bachelor lawyer from New Brunswick who had prospered in Alberta, Bennett was elected to the House of Commons in 1911 and became Conservative leader in 1927. After winning the federal election of 1930, Bennett tried to fight the depression by expanding trade within the British Empire. His success was limited, however, and Canadians began to link Bennett himself with the hard times. I n 1935, Bennett changed tactics, introducing his "New Deal" of public spending and federal intervention in the economy. Nevertheless, his Conservative Party was swept away in that year's election. Bennett retired to Britain and later sat in Britain's House of Lords as Viscount Bennett.

The Prime Minister may be any Canadian citizen of voting age (18). It is customary for all party leaders to also be sitting members of the House of Commons. If the a leader should fail to win his or her seat, a junior MP in a safe seat would typically resign to permit a by-election to elect that leader to a seat. However, if the party leader is changed shortly before an election is due and the new leader is not a Member of Parliament, he or she will normally await the general election before running for a seat. John Turner was briefly Prime Minister in , for example, without being a member of the House of Commons. The official residence of the Prime Minister is

Canadians support Prime Ministers Day
By Krista Foss Monday, February 11, 2002 More than 300,000 Canadians want a day off in February to honour a dead prime minister and many favour celebrating the country's glib-tongued founding father whose taste for tippling was legendary: Sir John A. Macdonald. Those are the results of a unique Web-based petition that invited Canadians to weigh in on whether we need a new national holiday that gives the nod to our forefathers and gives us a break in the depths of winter. The internet petition was launched Jan. 11 on globeandmail.com by CTV, The Globe and Mail and the Dominion Institute, which is campaigning to persuade the federal government to establish a national Prime Ministers Day on the second Monday of February. By the time the petition was stopped on the evening of Feb. 8, 375,280 people had responded to the question: Do you support the creation of a new public holiday to honour dead Canadian prime ministers? A sound majority 317,551 or 85 per cent said yes. "It's mind-boggling . . . the fact that 300,000-plus Canadians are concerned about what we do or, more likely, don't do, to recognize our prime ministers," said Rudyard Griffiths, the Dominion Institute's executive director.

Mysterious facts about Canadian Prime Ministers!
  • John A. Macdonald's birthdate is 11 January 1815. 1+8+1+5=15. John A. was 15 when he started articling with a lawyer. Their first names are the same in either official language. Sir John A. and Jean each had two sons and a daughter. John A. Macdonald became Prime Minister in 1867. 1+8+6+7=22. John A. worked in partnership with francophone politicians to promote Canada as a nation. Jean has worked in partnership with anglophone politicians to promote Canada as a nation. Their wives' maiden names begin with C. Both Prime Ministers served under female monarchs who had four syllables in their first names. John A. was drunk on rye. Jean was drunk on power. John A. threw up on his desk in the Commons and blamed the opposition. Jean choked a protester on Flag Day and blamed the protester. John A. was knighted. Jean prevented someone else from being knighted.

This is an exercise in selective comparison. It uses the same principles as the apparent comparisons between the Lincoln and Kennedy assasinations which is part of the mystique of America. Notice how the comparisons become weaker and more ridiculous as the list goes on. However, I still think it is a good excuse to give Canadians a holiday on 11 January!!! If you think of any other similarities between these two prime ministerial types, please e-mail the web page author by clicking
