The statistics released by the Canadian Cancer Society indicates cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in the country by 2010. “This disease is taking a huge toll on Canadians personally. It’s straining our healthcare system and it’s going to get worse as our population ages. Canada urgently needs to implement a national coordinated strategy to fight cancer", said Dr. Barbara Whylie, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Cancer Society in a letter on the CCS website. Highlights from the study: An estimated 145,500 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2004, with breast cancer holding top spot as the most frequently diagnosed cancer.

Laurino, Italy (October 24-28, 2003)
The Institute of Genetics (IG) of CIHR and the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network (CGDN) are pleased to announce a "Call for Applications" targeting Canadian researchers who are interested in participating at the reciprocal "New Frontiers: Italian/Canadian Population Genomics and Bioinformatic Collaborations" meeting being held in Laurino, Italy on October 24-28, 2003. The scientific workshop will encompass the following topics: applications of founder populations for the analysis of common complex disease, genomics/epidemiology/phenotyping in complex disease study, new technologies for high-throughput genome scanning, statistical and computational analyses facilitating study of complex diseases, and development of biobanks and related ethics for population genomics. It is important that the science demonstrates potential to enhance or to be supportive of collaborations between Italian and Canadian researchers. This event is building on the momentum generated by an earlier meeting in Montreal (December 2002), organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy to Canada, Office of the Scientific Attache', that was attended by more than 30 leading Canadian and Italian researchers in the fields of population genomics and bioinformatics (the proceedings are available on the

Results of the CIHR Request For Proposals (RFP) "Population Based Health and Health Services Data in Canada: Current Status and Future Health Research Potential"
The CIHR RFP " Population Based Health and Health Services Data in Canada: Current Status and Future Health Research Potential " is designed to engage the services of a team of research consultants/contractor(s) to describe the current status of population-based health and health services databases in Canada that are being used and show the potential for use in innovative and important health research. This RFP is the next step in the development of a coordinated approach that builds on Canada's comparative advantages and strengths in the research use of population-based health and health services data, the objectives of which are improvements in our health care system and the health of Canadians.

DRUG EXPENSE COVERAGE IN THE CANADIAN POPULATION:
    PROTECTION FROM SEVERE DRUG EXPENSES

The purpose of this report, Drug Expense Coverage in the Canadian Population (August, 2002), is to examine the extent to which Canadians are protected by their public and/or private sector drug plans from personal financial exposure due to severe drug expenses. The report builds on an earlier analysis of drug plan coverage, Drug Expense Insurance in the Canadian Population (July, 1998). Both reports were produced, on behalf of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), by Fraser Group and Tristat Resources. Executive Summary
  • This report examines the extent to which Canadians would be protected from substantial personal expense by their public and/or private sector drug coverage plans in the event they were to develop a medical condition requiring costly prescription drugs.
  • New drug therapies and changing patters of health care have created a situation in which Canadians with an increasing range of medical conditions may require extremely costly prescription drugs outside hospitals and thus outside Medicare coverage.
  • While the statistical frequency of this situation remains very low, it is increasing due to innovations in drug therapies. For example, while it is likely that fewer than five or six Canadians in a thousand requires prescription drugs costing more than $5,000 a year, there are more than 100,000 such Canadians currently and that number is virtually certain to increase over the years ahead.

This paper demonstrates how intensity regression and methods for visualizing demographic data can be applied to the study of sex differentials in survival in the Canadian population over the period 1921-1997. In general the results indicate that death rates declined differently for males and females and that the rate of mortality decline was not constant over age or over time. The global pattern of the Canadian sex differentials has a very distinct form and is consistent with findings for other countries. Author's affiliation

The Challenge of Ecology Where Human Ethics Clash with Ecology Changing our Ethics ... Steps Towards a Population Policy Problem, What Problem? The Challenge of Ecology
The major challenge for all humanity in the twenty-first century is to learn to live within the web of life on Earth without destroying it. This will be a difficult undertaking for a species with a misplaced sense of its own importance. It is only in the past few hundred years that humans have come to accept that the Earth (and by inference humanity) is not the centre of the Universe. Now, scientific knowledge about ecology makes it clear that human beings are not of central importance to the continuation of the process of life on Earth except in the negative sense that they have the capacity to destroy it. Human beings seem to have an instinctive drive to expand their numbers. Furthermore, in many cultures, including the globally predominant consumer culture, there is a bias that recognizes ethics only in terms of human relationships but not in terms of the human impact on other forms of life, regardless of the fact that they make human life possible. Consequently, human numbers and demands continue to grow and fuel the deterioration of the web of life on Earth. We must develop a new sense of ethics that involves confronting our instinctive expansionist drives and our disregard for non-human forms of life.

2001 CENSUS REVEALS LOWEST EVER INCREASE IN CANADIAN POPULATION Canada Contracepting and Aborting Itself Into Oblivion
OTTAWA, March 12, 2002 (LSN.ca) - 2001 Census results released today by Statistics Canada reveal that for the first time in Canada's history population increased by only 4% since the last census, with more than half of the increase due to immigration rather than births. Canada registered a population growth of about 1.16 million people between 1996 and 2001. At just over 30 million inhabitants, the country remains one of the most sparsely populated in the world.
The report noted that there have been only two other periods in which the population grew this slowly: during the Depression of the 1930s and the period between 1981 and 1986. It added that the low increase between 1981 and 1986 was due to exceptionally low levels of immigration - unlike the current situation.
