OMG i h8 r pm! ha ha :-D
Earlier this week, I read about a new initiative to attract young voters to the political process. Through a program called Youth Text 2004 , Canadian cellphone users can communicate with four of Canada's largest parties via text message. The parties will reply within 48 hours and, in theory, open a dialogue with otherwise ambivalent young Canadians. While voter turn-out among young Canadians is awful, this idea is deeply misguided. In an era of soundbyte politics, we're actually encouraging Canada's young people to think only in 100 characters or less? Do the parties really think they'll be able to convert the young electorate using SMS? However, I had to try it out. On Monday at 14:00 PST, I sent out two messages to each of the four participating parties. The questions were 'What is your party leader's position on legalization of pot?' and '[Party leader] - boxers or briefs?' What follows are the responses I got, entered exactly as I received them (errors and all): Legalization of pot Boxers or briefs Greens April 20, 7:14 PST - the green party is in favour of legalizing pot, as well as working to manage, not criminalize, addictive drugs

64. Registered Parties & Candidates For 2004 Canadian Elections

http://www.sfu.ca/~aheard/elections/parties.html
Home Political Parties Ridings Election News ... Political parties and candidates must register with Elections Canada in order to appear on the ballot. Any donations they receive are tax deductible, their parties' names appear on the ballot along with their candidates', and they qualify for government payments equal to 60% of their election expenses. Unregistered parties may run candidates, but the party's name would not appear on the ballot papers. To find out about the candidates in your riding, consult the CBC's excellent riding summaries , complete with a political history of the district and list of current candidates. An important court case in late 2003, Figueroa v. Canada (Attorney General) struck down the previous requirement that parties must field 50 candidates before they can officially register with Elections Canada. However, the alternatives created in the wake of the decision open the door to parties with only one candidate filing and collecting all the subsidies available. Bill C-3 was passed just before the dissolution of Parliament, and it allows parties with just one candidate to register if they have at least 250 members; however, these measures will not apply to the current 2004 election. For a good discussion of the significance of this issue see Heather MacIvor's article, The Charter of Rights and Party Politics . (pdf) Elections Canada's Political Party Handbook and Election Handbook for Candidates provide many more details about the rules that apply to political parties and individual candidates.

The Israeli and Canadian Political Systems:
A Critical Comparison
Israel and Canada are often accurately portrayed as "fellow democracies". Both have enshrined in their political cultures basic precepts of democracy. These include constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms of speech and assembly, universal suffrage, multiparty electoral systems, respect for human rights, a professional civil service, and the hallmark "checks and balances" on political power, such as an independent judiciary, independent press and independent police force. Nevertheless, despite these shared democratic values and traditions, there are important differences between the Israeli and Canadian political systems. Whereas Canada has a bicameral parliament, comprised of the House of Commons and the Senate, Israel's legislative system is unicameral, centred exclusively around the Knesset. The members of the House of Commons are chosen directly through a constituency-based "first past the post" electoral system, and the senators are appointed by the prime minister, ostensibly in consultation with the provincial premiers. The members of Israel's 120-seat Knesset are elected in an indirect manner, with their entry to the Knesset determined by their placement on party lists. Unlike Canada, which is divided into 301 separate ridings, all of Israel is one big riding. The number of Knesset seats won by a party is based on its share of the popular vote.

Electoral Politics Canadian Politics - Where is the democracy? by Dru Oja Jay Saturday August 23, 2003 at 07:25 PM Is this what Canadian democracy looks like?In November 2003, Paul Martin willbarring unimaginable circumstancesbe chosen as Canada's next Prime Minister. Legally and politically, this choice is not made by the Canadian public at large, but rather by a private club known as the Liberal Party of Canada. Even given that the Liberal Party has over 500,000 members (according to recent reports, a larger membership than any political party in Canadian history), most Canadians will not have a say in this decision. ballot.jpg, JPG image, 296x141

Canada Canada , the northernmost country on the North American continent, is a federation governed as a constitutional monarchy. It is bordered by the United States to the south as well as in the northwest. The Canada-U.S. border is the world's longest undefended border. The country stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. Canada also reaches the Arctic Ocean in the north where Canada's territorial claim extends to the North Pole.

Modern constitutional monarchies usually implement the concept of trias politica, and have the monarch as the (symbolic) head of the executive branch . Today, constitutional monarchy is almost always combined with representative democracy, and represents a compromise between theories of sovereignty which place sovereignty in the hands of the people, and those that see a role for tradition in the theory of government. Though the king or queen may be regarded as the government's symbolic head, it is the Prime Minister, whose power derives directly or indirectly from elections, who actually governs the country.
